they decreed that this divine hymn be sung throughout the entire inhabited world; and from that time all the churches received the tradition of singing it to God each day. Year of the world 5931. Year of the divine incarnation 431. Theodosius, emperor of the Romans, for 42 years. The 31st. Isdigerdes, king of the Persians, for 17 years. The 4th. Xystus, bishop of Rome, for 8 years. The 5th. Proclus, bishop of Constantinople, for 12 years. The 4th. Juvenal, bishop of Jerusalem, for 38 years. The 1st. Cyril, bishop of Alexandria, for 32 years. The 24th. John, bishop of Antioch, for 18 years. The 16th. In this year Valentinian was not only unable to recover Britain, Gaul, and Spain, but also lost western Libya, the country called that of the Africans, in the following manner. There were two generals, Aetius and Boniface, whom Theodosius 94 at the request of Valentinian sent to Rome. But when Boniface received the command of western Libya, the envious Aetius made an accusation against him, as one who was plotting rebellion and hastening to seize Libya; and these things he said to Placidia, the mother of Valentinian. And he wrote to Boniface that: "If you are summoned, do not be willing to come, for you have been slandered, and the emperors wish to subdue you by deceit." Having received this, Boniface, trusting Aetius as a genuine friend, was summoned but did not come. Then the emperors received Aetius as one who was loyal. At that time there were many and very great Gothic nations settled beyond the Danube in the hyperborean regions. And of these the four most noteworthy are the Goths, Visigoths, Gepids, and Vandals, differing only in names and in nothing else, using one dialect; and all are of the Arian false belief. These, in the time of Arcadius and Honorius, crossed the Danube and were settled in the land of the Romans. And the Gepids, from whom the Lombards and Avars were later divided, inhabited the regions around Singidunum and Sirmium. The Visigoths, after Alaric had sacked Rome, proceeded into the Gauls and took possession of the lands there. The Goths first held Pannonia, then in the 19th year of the reign of Theodosius the Younger, with his permission, they inhabited the regions of Thrace, and having spent 58 years in Thrace with Theuderic as their leader, a patrician and consul, with Zeno permitting them, they took control of the western empire. The Vandals, having allied with the Alans and the Germans now called Franks, crossed the Rhine river, having 95 Godigisel as their leader, settled in Spain, which is the first country of Europe from the western Ocean. But Boniface, fearing the Roman emperors, crossed from Libya to Spain and went to the Vandals. And finding that Godigisel was dead, and that his sons Guntharis and Gizeric were administering the rule, he persuaded them and promised to divide western Libya into three parts, on the condition that each would rule a third part with him, and that they would jointly defend themselves against any enemy whatsoever. On these agreements the Vandals crossed the strait and settled Libya from the Ocean as far as Tripoli by Cyrene. But the Visigoths, rising up from Gaul, took possession of Spain as well. But some of the Roman senate, friends of Boniface, reported the false accusation of Aetius to Placidia, making manifest also the letter of Aetius to Boniface, which Boniface had sent to them. And Placidia, being astonished, did no harm to Aetius, but sent to Boniface a persuasive message with oaths. And when Guntharis died, Gizeric became sole ruler of the Vandals. Boniface, therefore, having accepted the message, marched against the Vandals, a great army having come to him from both Rome and Byzantium, with Aspar as general. But of the war
