the practical are hands, feet "those not slothful in zeal," eyes those discerning according to the mind, the head those who lawfully preside as rulers as is necessary. 2.29 Those who are thus the head are also sharp-sighted and hear the parables of Jesus, and since there are many who are thus allegorically called the head, on account of the practical and contemplative life they have, consequently the head of the great priest receives all the crowns. And he is written of as a great priest also in the epistle to the Hebrews thus: "Since then we have a great high priest, Jesus, who has passed through the heavens, let us hold fast our confession." 2.30 And it is not at all strange for the head of one man to receive all the crowns. For if of each virtue, or rather each virtue is a crown, and the perfect man has all the best dispositions, since the virtues follow one another, the one who has them all binds on many crowns, primarily the man assumed by the Word of God, then his imitators, also called christs because they are partakers of him of whom it is said: "Christ the wisdom and power of God." 2.31Zach. VI, 12-15: And you will say to him: Thus says the Lord Almighty: Behold a man, his name is the dawn, and from below him he will dawn, and he will build the house of the Lord; and he himself will receive virtue, and will be seated and will rule upon his throne, and there will be a priest at his right hand, and there will be a peaceful counsel between them both. 2.32 But the crown shall be for those who endure and for her useful ones and for those who have recognized her and for the grace of the son of Sophonias and for a psalm in the house of the Lord. And those who are far from them shall come and build in the house of the Lord. And you shall know that the Lord Almighty has sent me to you; and it shall be, if you diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God. 2.33 "You will say," he says, "to him," that is, to the son of Sophonias: "Thus says the Lord Almighty: Behold a man, his name is the dawn." These things are said concerning our Savior who visited us, being a man according to the one born of Mary, the temple of God the Word, but being the true light and sun of righteousness. 2.34 What was said in the prophet Jeremiah agrees with the preceding, having it thus: "Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, and I will raise up to David a righteous dawn, and he shall reign as king and shall understand and shall execute judgment and righteousness on the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell securely, and this is his name, which the Lord will call him, Josedech among the prophets." 2.35 For the righteous dawn rising from David is the one shown by the hierophant in the passage: "Behold a man, his name is the dawn." This same man, called the dawn because he is the sun of righteousness, a righteous dawn having risen from David, we say is none other than the one who came from the seed of David according to the flesh, about whom the sacred herald Isaiah prophetically cries: "There shall be the root of Jesse, he who rises to rule the nations; in him the nations will hope and his rest shall be honor." 2.36 The Apostle sends the same message as the prophet, writing these things to his "true" disciple Timothy: "Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the seed of David." 2.37 For these quoted sayings reveal him who was born of the undefiled virgin and came here so that his name might be called: "God with us." For this is what Emmanuel signifies when translated. In agreement with these things are also what was proclaimed beforehand by the great patriarch in the blessings concerning Judah, beginning from here: "Judah, let your brothers praise you. Your hands are on the back of your enemies, and all the sons of your father will bow down to you. A lion's cub, from a shoot, my son, you have gone up." 2.38 For how did he not rise from a shoot, he who

Μέγας δὲ ἱερεὺς καὶ ἐν τῇ πρὸς Ἑβραίους ἐπιστολῇ γράφεται οὕτως· «Ἔχοντες οὖν ἱερέα μέγαν Ἰησοῦν τὸν διεληλυθότα τοὺς οὐρανούς, κρατῶμεν τῆς ὁμολογίας.» 2.30 Καὶ παράδοξον οὐδὲν ἑνὸς ἀνδρὸς κεφαλὴν δέχεσθαι τοὺς ὅλους στεφάνους. Εἰ γὰρ ἑκάστης ἀρετῆς, μᾶλλον δὲ ἑκάστη ἀρετὴ στέφανός ἐστιν, ὁ τέλειος δὲ πάσας ἔχει τὰς βελτίστας ἕξεις, ἀντακολουθουσῶν τῶν ἀρετῶν ἑαυταῖς, ὁ πάσας ἔχων πολλοὺς ἀναδεῖται στεφάνους, προηγουμένως μὲν ὁ ἀναλημφθεὶς ὑπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ Λόγου ἄνθρωπος, ἔπειτα οἱ μιμηταὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ αὐτοὶ προσαγορευόμενοι χριστοὶ διὰ τὸ μέτοχοι εἶναι περὶ οὗ εἴρηται· «Χριστὸς Θεοῦ σοφία καὶ δύναμ̣ις̣.» 2.31Zach. Καὶ ἐπιγνώσεσθε διότι Κύριος παντοκράτωρ ἀπέσταλκέν με πρὸς ὑμᾶς· καὶ ἔσται, ἐὰν εἰσακούοντες εἰσακούσητε τῆς φωνῆς Κυρίου τοῦ Θεοῦ ὑμῶν. 2.33 «Ἐρεῖς», φησίν, «πρὸς αὐτόν», δηλονότι τὸν υἱὸν Σοφονίου· «Τάδε λέγει Κύριος παντοκράτωρ· Ἰδοὺ ἀνήρ, ἀνατολὴ ὄνομα αὐτῷ». Λέγεται δὲ ταῦτα περὶ τοῦ ἐπιδημήσαντος Σωτῆρος ἡμῶν, ἀνδρὸς μὲν ὄντος κατὰ τὸν τεχθέντα ἐκ Μαρίας, ναὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ Λόγου, ὄντος δὲ φωτὸς ἀληθινοῦ καὶ δικαιοσύνης ἡλίου. 2.34 Συνᾴδει τῷ προκειμένῳ τὸ εἰρημένον ἐν τῷ προφήτῃ Ἰερεμίᾳ ἔχον οὕτως· «Ἰδοὺ ἡμέραι ἔρχονται, λέγει Κύριος, καὶ ἀναστήσω τῷ ∆αυὶδ ἀνατολὴν δικαίαν, καὶ βασιλεύων βασιλεύσει καὶ συνήσει καὶ ποιήσει κρίμα καὶ δικαιοσύνην ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς. Ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις αὐτοῦ σωθήσεται Ἰούδας, καὶ Ἰσραὴλ κατασκηνώσει πεποιθώς, καὶ τοῦτο τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ, ὃ καλέσει αὐτὸν Κύριος, Ἰωσεδὲκ ἐν τοῖς προφήταις.» 2.35 Ὁ γὰρ ἀνιστάμενος ἐκ τοῦ ∆αυὶδ ἀνατολὴ δικαία ὁ δεικνύμενός ἐστιν πρὸς τοῦ ἱεροφάντου ἐν τῷ· «Ἰδοὺ ἀνήρ, ἀνατολὴ ὄνομα αὐτῷ.» Τοῦτον αὐτὸν τὸν ἄνδρα ἀνατολὴν προσαγορευόμενον διὰ τὸ δικαιοσύνης ἥλιον ὑπάρχειν, ἐκ τοῦ ∆αυὶδ ἀνατολὴ δικαία ἀναστᾶσα, οὐχ ἕτερον ὑπάρχειν φαμὲν τοῦ γεναμένου ἐκ σπέρματος ∆αυὶδ κατὰ σάρκα, περὶ οὗ ὁ ἱεροκῆρυξ Ἠσαΐας προφητικῶς βοᾷ· «Ἔσται ἡ ῥίζα τοῦ Ἰεσσαί, ὁ ἀνιστάμενος ἄρχειν ἐθνῶν· ἐπ' αὐτῷ ἔθνη ἐλπιοῦσιν καὶ ἔσται ἡ ἀνάπαυσις αὐτοῦ τιμή.» 2.36 Τὰ αὐτὰ τῷ προ̣φήτῃ ἐπιστέλλει ὁ Ἀπόστολος τάδε γράφων τῷ «γνησίῳ» μαθητῇ ἑαυτοῦ Τιμοθέῳ· «Μνημόνευε Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν ἐγηγερμένον ἐκ σπέρματος ∆αυίδ.» 2.37 Ταῦτα γὰρ τὰ ἐκτεθέντα ῥητὰ δηλοῖ τὸν ἐκ τῆς ἀχ̣ράντου παρθένου τεχθέντα δεῦρό τε φοιτήσαντα ἵνα κληθῇ ὄνομα αὐτῷ· «μεθ' ἡμῶν ὁ Θεός». Τοῦτο γὰρ ἀποσημαίνει μεθε̣ρ̣μηνευόμενον τὸ Ἐμμανουήλ. Σύμφωνα τούτοις ὑπάρχε̣ι καὶ τὰ ὑπὸ τοῦ μεγάλου πατριάρχου προαναφωνηθέντα ἐν ταῖς περὶ τοῦ Ἰούδα εὐλογίαις ἔνθεν ἀρχόμενα· «Ἰούδα, σὲ αἰν̣έσαισαν οἱ ἀδελφοί σου.
