Holy Spirit always, high from high and most high, intelligent, having immeasurable glory, to whom are subject created and made things, simply all things 73.5 measured and contained each one. But one Godhead is especially announced in Moses, and a dyad is strongly preached in the prophets, and a triad is revealed in the gospels, more fitting for the just one according to the times and generations for knowledge and faith. And knowledge of it 73.6 is immortality, and from faith in it adoption as sons comes to be. But first it expresses ordinances of the flesh, as if raising up the outer enclosure of the temple in Moses; second, it narrates ordinances of the soul, as if adorning the holy places in the other prophecies; third, ordinances of the spirit, as if arranging the mercy seat and the holy of holies in the gospels for its own habitation; a holy tabernacle, a holy temple, which 73.7 has only the just one who is with these things. And there dwells in it one infinite Godhead, one incorruptible Godhead, one inconceivable Godhead, incomprehensible, ineffable, invisible, knowing only itself, revealing itself to whom it wishes, raising up witnesses to itself, calling, predestining, glorifying, raising up from Hades, sanctifying, 73.8 unifying again for its own glory and faith these three things: heavenly, earthly, and subterranean; spirit, soul, flesh; faith, hope, love; past, present, future; age of age, ages of ages, sabbaths of sabbaths; circumcision of the flesh, circumcision of the heart, "the circumcision of Christ in the putting off of the body of 73.9 sins"; and in general it purifies all things for itself, things invisible and visible, thrones, dominions, principalities, authorities, powers; and in all things the same holy voice, from glory to glory crying holy, holy, holy, glorifying the Father in the Son, and the Son in the Father with the Holy Spirit, to whom be the glory and the power for ever and ever, amen. And he who so believes will say, so be it, so be it. 74.1 And concerning the trinity and consubstantiality of God the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, we who are weak and unlearned, devising no sophistries nor committing ourselves "to the cunning of men," but rather gathering testimonies from the divine scriptures, have partially collected them for those who wish to find what is faithful and to refute the faithless and vainglorious. For great is the power of faith in the Holy Spirit, 74.2 proclaimed in various ways in all the divine scriptures. But since the security of our salvation is the sure confession concerning the incarnation and fleshly presence of our Savior and the confirmation of hope and concerning the resurrection of the dead and our regeneration, we ourselves again, adding a little to this our labor for those who wish to read more accurately from the same divine scriptures, persist in gathering and adding to the discourse. 74.3 For since, as we have already been taught in what has been written before, our Lord himself in his gospel said to his disciples, "Go and baptize all the nations in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe the commandments that I have commanded you," * the holy Word himself, who is in his own person, who came forth from the Father, through whom the ages came to be, through whom times and seasons came to be. 74.4 For there was no season nor time before the Son. For if there was time before the Son, then time is greater than the Son, and how "were all things made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made"? Because if anything was made, it was made through him, but he himself is uncreated and always existing; because the Father always was 74.5 and his Holy Spirit always was. For if there was time before the Son, then another will be sought through whom also the time before the Son was, and for the rest it will turn our reasoning to myriad imaginings lurking in the supposition of men, or rather to a fornication of thoughts and not † concerning soberness. 74.6 there was not
