we will not cease, (125) and after death, having fallen from the kingdom of heaven because of these things, we will be eternally punished again by such things.
For this reason I exhort you all, my spiritual fathers and brothers, and exhorting your love I shall never cease, that each not neglect his own salvation, but strive in every way to be lifted up a little from the earth. For if this miracle happens that astounds you, I mean being suspended in the air from the earth, you will no longer wish to descend to the earth and stand there at all; and by "earth" I mean the carnal mindset and by "air" the spiritual mindset. For if the mind is freed from evil thoughts and passions and through it we behold the freedom that Christ and God has granted us, we will no longer consent to descend to the former slavery of sin and of the carnal mindset, but according to the voice of the Lord we will not cease to be vigilant and to pray, until we pass over to the blessedness there and obtain the promised goods, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom belongs all glory unto the ages of ages. Amen.
On spiritual work. And what the work of the ancient saints was. And how we can accomplish this, so that we too may become partakers, just like them, of the
Most Holy Spirit.
Discourse VI. (126) Brothers and fathers, since some, thinking great things about themselves, as they should not, consider themselves equal in action and knowledge and perfection to our ancient God-bearing holy fathers and to the same spirit by which they lived and were moved, recommending themselves by words alone and without works, having been led astray by a spirit of conceit, I thought to speak to them briefly in this way, in simplicity and straightforwardness of speech, as if to one person, both because of God who said: "And you, when you have turned back, correct your brothers," and because of the common love that we are commanded to have for our neighbors. I shall begin from here to speak in plainness and to exhort your love.
Do you wish, therefore, to hear what our holy fathers did, sitting in their cells? Read their lives and first learn for yourself their bodily practice for a time, (127) then I will announce to you the spiritual work that they performed. For those who wrote the lives of the saints revealed their physical practices—poverty, fasting, vigils, self-control, patience, and the rest in order, so that we do not lengthen the discourse by enumerating everything—but their spiritual work they revealed little and as if in a mirror through such things, so that those who demonstrate the labors of those men and their faith by their works, might by these deeds themselves come into the knowledge and participation of their spiritual gifts, while the rest might not be deemed worthy even to hear about such things. But since we have been brought down into such a pit of folly as to think that we too have grace equal to them even without the works which they performed, come, let us exercise the discourse concerning them, and having received full assurance from the attested facts, let us for a time strive according to
