of the aforementioned prophet, born many years between them; or also concerning Lycurgus or Draco or Minos the lawgivers, the sacred books precede these in antiquity, seeing that the writings of the divine law given to us through Moses are shown to precede even Zeus who reigned over the Cretans, and certainly also the Trojan War. But that we may make a more accurate proof of the eras and times, with God providing us not only to relate the events after the flood but also those before the flood, so as to state for us the total number as far as possible, we shall now do so, running back to the beginning from of old of the world’s creation, which Moses, the servant of God, wrote through the Holy Spirit. For having spoken of the creation and genesis of the world, of the first-formed man, and of those born in succession, he also indicated the years that passed before the flood. And I ask for grace from the only God, to speak all things truly and accurately according to His will, so that you and every one who comes upon these things may be guided by His truth and grace. I shall begin then first from the recorded genealogies, that is, making my beginning from the first-formed man. Adam lived 230 years until he begot a son, and his son Seth 205 years, and his son Enos 100 years, and his son Cainan 170 years, and his son Maleleel 165 years, and his son Jared 162 years, and his son Enoch 165 years, and his son Methuselah 167 years, and his son Lamech 188 years. To him was born a son, the aforementioned Noah, who begot Shem when he was 500 years old. In his time the flood occurred, when he was 600 years old. All the years, therefore, until the flood amount to 2242. And after the flood, immediately Shem, being 100 years old, begot Arphaxad, and Arphaxad begot Sala, being 135 years old, and Sala begot when he was 130 years old, and his son was Eber, being 134 years old, from whom their race was also called Hebrews, and his son was Peleg, being 130 years old, and his son was Ragau, being 132 years old, and his son was Seruch, being 130 years old, and his son was Nachor, being 75 years old, and his son was Tharra, being 70 years old, and his son Abraham our patriarch begot Isaac when he was 100 years old. The years until Abraham, therefore, are 3278. The aforementioned Isaac lived 60 years until begetting a child, who begot Jacob; Jacob lived 130 years until the migration that occurred into Egypt, which we have mentioned above, and the sojourning of the Hebrews in Egypt was 430 years, and after they came out of the land of Egypt they spent 40 years in the so-called wilderness. The total therefore becomes 3038 years, at which time, when Moses died, Jesus the son of Naue succeeded to the rule, who presided over them for 27 years. And after Jesus, when the people transgressed from the commandments of God, they served the king of Mesopotamia, Chusarathon by name, for years
