Then, being required by the party of Eusebius before the blessed "7Constantine Augustus to state his own faith in writing, "7the crafty one wrote, hiding the shameless words of his impiety, "7feigning, just like the devil, the simple words of the scriptures just as 2.30.2 "7they are written. Then the blessed Constantine said, "If you hold nothing "7other than this in your mind, give the truth as your witness; for the Lord "7himself will avenge you if you perjure yourself." The wretched man swore that he neither held "7nor thought anything other than what was now written, even if it might ever have been said by "7him. But immediately upon leaving, as if paying a penalty, he fell down "and falling headlong, he burst asunder 2.30.3 "7in the midst." Now, for all men the common end of life is 2.30.3 "7death, and one ought not to gloat over anyone, even if the one who died was an enemy, "7since it is uncertain whether this same thing might not befall oneself before evening. But the end "7of Arius, since it did not happen in a simple way, for this reason is also worthy of narration. 2.30.4 "7For while the party of Eusebius was threatening to bring him into the church, "7Alexander, the bishop of Constantinople, was speaking against it. But "7Arius was confident in the force and threats of Eusebius; for it was a Saturday, "7and he expected to join the assembly on the next day. And there was even now a great struggle, with them "7threatening, and Alexander praying. But the Lord, becoming judge, "7gave the award against the wrongdoers. For the sun had not yet set, and when the call "7of nature drew him to a certain place, he fell down there, and was immediately deprived of both 2.30.5 "7communion and life. And the blessed Constantine, "7upon hearing of it, marveled, knowing that this man had been convicted as a perjurer. And it then became "7manifest to all that the threats of the party of Eusebius had grown weak and the hope "7of Arius had become vain. And it was shown again that the Arian madness has been excluded "7from communion by the Savior, both here and in the "church of the firstborn in "7heaven." Who then would not marvel, seeing these men striving to justify "7one whom the Lord condemned, and seeing them avenging the "7heresy, whom the Lord proved to be excommunicate, not permitting its leader "7to enter into the church.” 2.30.6 Thus have we received the account of how Arius died. Therefore, there is a story that for a long time no one used the latrine seat on which he died; but since people were crowded into the public place because of need, as is wont to happen in a crowd, and those entering were exhorting one another to avoid the seat, the place was an object of aversion also to those who came after, as if Arius had paid the penalties for his impiety right there. 2.30.7 But later in time one of his supporters, who was both rich <and> powerful, with great effort purchased this place from the state and built a house, having destroyed its former appearance, so that forgetfulness might come upon the people and the death of Arius might not be made a public mockery by the handing down of such a memory. 2.31.1 But not even when he died did the inquiry into the doctrines he had invented come to an end, nor did his supporters cease from plotting against those who held the opposite opinions. 2.31.2 And indeed, while the people of Alexandria were continuously crying out and begging in supplications for the return of Athanasius, and Antony the great monk wrote and pleaded many times about him not to be persuaded by the Meletians, but to consider their accusations as slander, the emperor was not persuaded, but he wrote to the Alexandrians, charging them with folly and disorder, and commanding the clergy and the holy virgins to keep quiet; and he insisted that he would not change his mind nor recall Athanasius, as one who was seditious and had been condemned by an ecclesiastical 2.31.3 judgment. But to Antony he declared in reply that he was not able to disregard the vote of the synod. For if even a few, he said, judged out of enmity or favor, it is surely not plausible that such a multitude of distinguished and good bishops would be of the same opinion; for Athanasius was insolent and
