what is the benefit of abstaining from evil deeds only? But if we secretly take pieces of bread and eat them, or lay hold of something else from somewhere, and these things without the prayer of our superior, who would say we are free from sin? And if we willingly stay away from the synaxes, apart from great illness or some necessary need, if while guarding the fruits we do not practice self-control from them—for what else was it that cast Adam out of paradise and delivered him to death?—what will we gain from avoiding the things that have been mentioned? For not even if someone has a wound covering his whole body, and then having been healed of the wound by many medicines except for a little, can he be called healthy, if he carries a small hole of a wound equal to a needle's, but the one who has also, if possible, made the bruises of the wound disappear, (124) he will rightly be called healthy by all. Let us not then reckon these things as small, but hearing of others who were punished for these things and severely condemned, let us with all our strength flee the harm from them. And let no one, beloved, persist in any of these things or in any other passion henceforth, but from now on let him abstain and repent, making a beginning, and let him not cease confessing his own defeat, until the enemy who suggests it to him, being put to shame, ceases to wage war on him. Let not envy rule over us, nor wrath or anger and clamor, from which shameful words and insults are wont to be born, lest vainglory and pride and conceit, having taken hold of us, drag us down to the abyss of Hades, but banishing all these things far from ourselves, let us acquire the virtues in their place.

Perhaps someone will say: "Since the passions that have been mentioned are so many and almost innumerable, who is able to investigate all these and abstain from all of them, so that one is not mastered by any of them? ". I, by the grace of Christ, will teach you. The one who always considers his own sins and continually foresees the coming judgment and repents and weeps fervently, this one surpasses all things together and overcomes, being lifted up by repentance, so that not even one of the aforementioned things can reach and lay hold of his soul that walks on air. But if our mind is not winged by repentance and tears and by the spiritual humility that comes from these things and lifted up to the height of dispassion, we will not be able to become free of all the things that have been mentioned, but we will not cease (125) to be goaded sometimes by this passion, and sometimes by another, and to be devoured as by wild beasts, and after death, having fallen away from the kingdom of heaven because of these things, we will be eternally punished again by such things.

For this reason I exhort all of you, my spiritual fathers and brothers, and exhorting your love I will never cease, that each one not neglect his own salvation, but strive in every way to be lifted a little from the earth. For if this happens, this marvel that will astound you, I mean being suspended in the air from the earth, you will no longer wish to come down to the earth and stand at all; and by "earth" I mean the carnal mindset, and by "air" the spiritual. For if the mind is freed from evil thoughts and passions, and through it we behold the freedom which Christ and God has granted us, we will no longer accept to go down to the former slavery of sin and of the carnal mindset, but according to the Lord's voice we will not cease to watch and pray, until we pass over to the blessedness there and obtain the promised good things, by the grace and love for mankind of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom belongs all glory unto the ages of ages. ὄφελος ἐκ τῆς τῶν πονηρῶν ἔργων καί μόνων ἀποχῆς; Εἰ δέ καί λάθρα ἄρτου τεμάχια αἵρομεν καί ἐσθίομεν ἤ ἄλλο τί ποθεν ἐπιλαβόμενοι καί ταῦτα ἄνευ εὐχῆς τοῦ προεστῶτος ἡμῶν, τίς ἄν εἴπῃ ἐλευθέρους ἡμᾶς ἁμαρτίας; Εἰ δέ καί τῶν συνάξεων, δίχα μεγάλης ἀσθενείας ἤ ἀναγκαίας χρείας τινός, ἑκουσίως ἀπολιμπανόμεθα, εἰ δέ καί τους καρπούς φυλάσσοντες ἐξ αὐτῶν οὐκ ἐγκρατευόμεθα - καί γάρ τί ἄλλο ἦν ὅ τόν Ἀδάμ ἐκ τοῦ παραδείσου ἐξέβαλε καί τῷ θανάτῳ παρέδωκε; τί κερδανοῦμεν ἐκ τῆς τῶν εἰρημένων ἀποφυγῆς; Οὐδέ γάρ εἰ ὁλόσωμόν τις πληγήν ἔχων, εἶτα διά φαρμάκων πολλῶν ἰαθείς παρά μικρόν τήν πληγήν, δύναται ὑγιής λέγεσθαι, εἰ μικράν ὀπήν ἴσην ῥαφίδος ἐπιφέρεται τραύματος, ἀλλ᾿ ὁ καί τούς μώλωπας, εἰ δυνατόν, τοῦ τραύματος ἐξαφανίσας, (124) ἐκεῖνος παρά πάντων εἰκότως λεχθήσεται ὑγιής. Μή οὖν ταῦτα μικρά λογιζώμεθα, ἀλλά διά ταῦτα τιμωρηθέντας ἄλλους ἀκούοντες καί καταδικασθέντας σφοδρῶς, ἡμεῖς τήν ἐξ αὐτῶν βλάβην πάσῃ δυνάμει ἐκφύγωμεν. Καί μηδείς, ἀγαπητοί, ἔν τινι τούτων ἤ πάθει ἑτέρῳ τοῦ λοιποῦ ἐπιμείνῃ, ἀλλ᾿ ἀπό τοῦ νῦν ἀποσχόμενος μετανοησάτω βαλών ἀρχήν, καί μή ἀποστῇ ἐξαγγέλλων τήν ἧτταν ἑαυτοῦ, ἕως ἄν αἰσχυνθείς ὁ ὑποβάλλων αὐτῷ ἐχθρός παύσηται τοῦ αὐτόν πολεμεῖν. Μή φθόνος κυριεύσῃ ἡμῶν, μή ὀργή ἤ θυμός καί κραυγή, ἐξ ὧν αἰσχρολογίαι καί ὕβρεις εἰώθασι τίκτεσθαι, μή κενοδοξία καί ὑπερηφανία καί οἴησις κατασχοῦσαι ἡμᾶς εἰς βυθόν ᾅδου καθέλξωσιν, ἀλλά ταῦτα πάντα πόρρω ἐξορίσαντες ἑαυτῶν, κτησώμεθα τάς ἀρετάς ἀντ᾿ αὐτῶν.

Ἴσως δέ τις ἐρεῖ ὅτι· "Τοσούτων ὄντων καί ἀναριθμήτων παρά μικρόν τῶν εἰρημένων παθῶν, τίς δύναται ταῦτα ἐρευνᾶν πάντα καί ἐκ τούτων πάντων ἀπέχεσθαι, ἵνα μή ὑπ᾿ οὐδενός τούτων κυριευθῇ τις; ". Ἐγώ χάριτι Χριστοῦ διδάξω ὑμᾶς. Ὁ ἀεί ἐννοῶν τάς ἑαυτοῦ ἁμαρτίας καί τήν μέλλουσαν κρίσιν διηνεκῶς προορῶν καί μετανοῶν καί κλαίων θερμῶς, οὗτος ὑπεραίνει πάντα ὁμοῦ καί ὑπερνικᾷ ὑπό τῆς μετανοίας ὑψούμενος, ὡς μή δύνασθαι ἕν καί μόνον τῶν εἰρημένων φθάσαι καί καθάψασθαι αὐτοῦ τῆς ἀεροβατούσης ψυχῆς. Εἰ δέ μή ἡ διάνοια ἡμῶν ὑπό τῆς μετανοίας και τῶν δακρύων καί ὑπό τῆς ἐγγινομένης ἐκ τούτων πνευματικῆς ταπεινώσεως πτερωθεῖσα εἰς ὕψος ἀπαθείας ἀρθῇ, οὐκ ἄν ἐλεύθεροι τῶν εἰρημένων ἁπάντων γενέσθαι ἰσχύσωμεν, ἀλλά ποτέ μέν ὑπό τοῦδε τοῦ πάθους, ποτέ δέ ὑφ᾿ ἑτέρου κεντᾶσθαι καί ὡς ὑπό θηρίων ἀγρίων κατεσθίεσθαι οὐ (125) παυσόμεθα, καί μετά θάνατον διά ταῦτα τῆς τῶν οὐρανῶν βασιλείας ἐκπεσόντες, ὑπό τῶν τοιούτων πάλιν αἰωνίως κολασθησόμεθα.

∆ιά τοῦτο παρακαλῶ πάντας ὑμᾶς, πνευματικοί μου πατέρες καί ἀδελφοί, καί παρακαλῶν οὐδέποτε παύσομαι τήν ὑμετέραν ἀγάπην, μή ἀμελῆσαι ἕκαστον τῆς ἑαυτοῦ σωτηρίας, ἀλλά παντί τρόπῳ σπουδάσαι ἀρθῆναι μικρόν ἀπό τῆς γῆς. Εἰ γάρ τοῦτο γενήσεται τό θαῦμα καταπλῆξαν ὑμᾶς, τό ἀπό τῆς γῆς εἰς ἀέρα λέγω κρέμασθαι, οὐκέτι πρός τήν γῆν κατελθεῖν καί στῆναι κἄν ὅλως θελήσετε· "γῆν"δέ τό σαρκικόν καί "ἀέρα"τό πνευματικόν λέγω φρόνημα. Εἰ γάρ ὁ νοῦς τῶν πονηρῶν λογισμῶν καί παθῶν ἐλευθερωθῇ καί θεασόμεθα δι᾿ αὐτοῦ τήν ἐλευθερίαν, ἥν ἡμῖν ὁ Χριστός καί Θεός ἐχαρίσατο, οὐκέτι καταδεξόμεθα πρός τήν προτέραν δουλείαν τῆς ἁμαρτίας καί τοῦ σαρκικοῦ φρονήματος κατελθεῖν, ἀλλά κατά τήν τοῦ Κυρίου φωνήν γρηγορεῖν καί προσεύχεσθαι οὐ παυσόμεθα, ἕως ἄν πρός τήν ἐκεῖθεν μεταβῶμεν μακαριότητα καί τῶν ἐπηγγελμένων ἐπιτύχωμεν ἀγαθῶν, χάριτι καί φιλανθρωπίᾳ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοοῦ, ᾧ πρέπει πᾶσα δόξα εἰς τούς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων.
