eight. Then, when the people repented, judges were appointed for them. Othniel for forty years, Eglon for 18 years, Ehud for 8 years. Then when they sinned, foreigners ruled for 20 years. Then Deborah judged them for 40 years; then the Midianites ruled them for 7 years. Then Gideon judged them for 40 years, Abimelech for 3 years, Tola for 23 years, Jair for 22 years. Then the Philistines and the Ammonites ruled them for 18 years. Then Jephthah judged them for six years, Ibzan for 7 years, Elon for 10 years, Abdon for 8 years. Then foreigners ruled them for 40 years. Then Samson judged them for 20 years. Then there was peace among them for 40 years. Then Samgar judged them for one year, Eli for 20 years, Samuel for 12 years. And after the judges there were kings among them, first named Saul, who reigned for 20 years, then David our forefather for 40 years. So until the reign of David, the total is 498 years. Therefore, up to the sojourn in the land of Babylon, the total is 4054 years, months, 10 days. And just as God foretold through Jeremiah the prophet that the people would be taken captive to Babylon, so he also signified that they would return again to their own land after 70 years. When the 70 years were completed, therefore, Cyrus became king of the Persians, who, according to the prophecy of Jeremiah, in the second year of his reign, proclaimed, commanding by written decrees all the Jews who were in his kingdom to return to their own country and to rebuild for God the temple, which the aforementioned king of Babylon had destroyed. In addition to this, Cyrus, at the command of God, ordered Sheshbazzar and Mithridates, his own bodyguards, that the vessels taken from the temple of Judea by Nebuchadnezzar be brought back and deposited in the temple. Ὃν τρόπον δὲ ὁ θεὸς προεῖπεν διὰ Ἰερεμίου τοῦ προφήτου τὸν λαὸν αἰχμαλωτισθῆναι εἰς Βαβυλῶνα, οὕτως προεσήμανεν καὶ τὸ πάλιν ἐπανελθεῖν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν γῆν αὐτῶν μετὰ ο ἔτη. τελειου- μένων οὖν ο ἐτῶν γίνεται Κύρος βασιλεὺς Περσῶν, ὃς κατὰ τὴν προφητείαν Ἰερεμίου δευτέρῳ ἔτει τῆς βασιλείας αὐτοῦ ἐκήρυξεν κελεύων δι' ἐγγράφων τοὺς Ἰουδαίους πάντας, τοὺς ὄντας ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ αὐτοῦ ἐπιστρέφειν εἰς τὴν ἑαυτῶν χώραν καὶ τῷ θεῷ ἀνοικοδομεῖν τὸν ναόν, ὃν καθῃρήκει βασιλεὺς Βαβυλῶνος ὁ προειρη- μένος. πρὸς τούτοις δὲ ὁ Κύρος κατ' ἐγκέλευσιν τοῦ θεοῦ προσέταξεν Σαβεσσάρῳ καὶ Μιθριδάτῃ, τοῖς ἰδίοις σωματοφύλαξιν, τὰ σκεύη τὰ ἐκ τοῦ ναοῦ τοῦ τῆς Ἰουδαίας ληφθέντα ὑπὸ τοῦ Ναβουχοδονόσορ ἀποκομισθῆναι καὶ ἀποτεθῆναι εἰς τὸν ναόν. ἐν τῷ οὖν δευτέρῳ ἔτει
