The amir, having been often informed by the patrikios and strategos Theophilos and seeing that he had no hope of life from anywhere, submitted and consented to become a servant of our empire, giving his son as a hostage. Mastaton belonged to the Theodosiopolitans, and when the magistros John besieged Theodosioupolis for seven months, because he was unable to take it, having sent a force, he took this same castle of Mastaton, and installed in it the protospatharios Petronas Boilas, who was then katepano of Nikopolis. The magistros Pankratios, having campaigned with the same magistros at Theodosioupolis, when he was about to depart, requested that he give him this castle, making a written oath to him to hold it and never to hand it over to the Saracens. And because he was both a Christian and a servant of our empire, believing his oath, he gave it to the said Pankratios, but he in turn gave it back to the Theodosiopolitans. And when Theodosioupolis was taken, the Iberians entered and seized it, for they have no authority to claim either this castle of Mastaton or that of Abnikon. But since the curopalates is a faithful and true servant and friend of ours, on his request that the river Erax, that is the Phasis, become the boundary of Phasiane, and that the Iberians hold the parts on the left, towards Illyria, while the parts on the right, as many as are towards Theodosioupolis, whether they be castles or districts, should be under our empire, with the river obviously being the boundary for both, just as the blessed John Kourkouas, when he was alive and asked about this, said that it was advantageous for the river to be the boundary. For strict justice gives no authority to the curopalates to hold possession either on this side of the river or on that, because the armies of our empire took captive and burned all such districts of the Theodosiopolitans, and never without our people did the Iberians go out and raid Theodosioupolis, but they always had them as friends, and did business with them, and with their mouth they wanted Theodosioupolis to be sacked, but in their heart they by no means wanted it to be taken. But our empire, as has been said, on account of its love for the curopalates, wished the river Erax, that is the Phasis, to become the boundary for both, and they ought to be content with such a possession and to seek nothing more. 46 Concerning the genealogy of the Iberians and the castle of Ardanoutzi. It should be known that Pankratios and David Mampalis, which is interpreted "all-holy", were sons of the great Symbatios, the Iberian. And Ardanoutzi fell by inheritance to Pankratios, while another country fell to David. And Pankratios had three sons, Adranaser, Kourkenios and the patrikios Asotios, also called Kiskases, and he divided his country among them, and Ardanoutzi fell to his son, Kourkenios, and when he died childless, he left it to his brother, Asotios, also called Kiskases. The patrikios Asotios, also called Kiskases, took that Kourkenes, the magistros, as son-in-law for his daughter, who, after becoming powerful, took Ardanoutzi from his father-in-law Asotios by force, and gave him in exchange both Tyrokastron and the river-land of Atzara, which is the border of Romania at Kolorin. The patrikios Asotios, also called Kiskases, had as his wife the sister of the magistros George and exousiastes of Abasgia. And when the magistros Kourkenios and the magistros George and exousiastes of Abasgia came to be against one another, because the patrikios Asotios was fighting on the side of the exousiastes of Abasgia, Kourkenios, having prevailed, took away also the exchange which he had given him for Ardanoutzi, and drove him out, and he went away to Abasgia. And when the magistros Kourkenios died, Ardanoutzi was left
