after two days he sent it to the emperor. But the emperor, recognizing it, hid it. And going away he says to the augusta: "my salvation, the apple, which I sent to you, where is it?" And she said: "By your salvation, I ate it." Then, moved to anger, he commands the apple to be brought in and Paulinus to be exiled to Cappadocia and to be executed there. And the above-mentioned Eusebius the scholasticus, who first took hold of Nestorius, having been promoted to the episcopacy of Dorylaeum and discussing the faith with Eutyches the archimandrite, found him not thinking correctly. And having advised him many things, he was not strong enough to help him. Then Eusebius reported the things concerning him to Flavian the bishop, who, having convened a synod of 40 bishops, summoned Eutyches and, having interrogated him according to the entire sequence of the ecclesiastical 100 canons and having found him heretical and treacherous, deposed him. But Chrysaphius, his partisan, who held power in the palace, and learning these things, was inflamed to greater anger against Flavian and made it known to Dioscorus of Alexandria that he would cooperate with him in all things according to his desire, if he would join with him in the accusations against Flavian and Eusebius and would contend on behalf of Eutyches. And toward this he also moved the augusta Eudocia, reminding her of the grievous things concerning Pulcheria against Flavian; and both of them prepared the emperor to decree that a second synod be convened in Ephesus, and they granted Dioscorus to preside over the synod, having sent to him a very large army for assistance. 41. 14. 7. 2. 11. 2. 8. In this year, by the command of the emperor Theodosius, the robber and lawless synod was assembled in Ephesus for the matters concerning Flavian and Eutyches to be judged by the impious Dioscorus, according to the advice of Chrysaphius the eunuch, surnamed Tzoumas, who had persuaded the emperor in his folly. And when all were assembled in Ephesus, Dioscorus, presiding, did not allow another notary to be present at the synod, but made his own alone write down the proceedings. Therefore, when an inquiry occurred, Eutyches was required to declare his own opinion, and he answered saying: "I confess our Lord to be from two natures before the union; but after the union I confess one nature." Then Dioscorus said: "And we all agree with these things." And the legates of Pope Leo of Rome, seeing the impulse of Dioscorus, and that he did not permit the letter of the pope to Flavian to be read, nor the one to the synod, but they were disregarded, fled and went down to Rome. And Dioscorus restored the priesthood to Eutyches, but readily deposed Eusebius of Dorylaeum and Flavian of Constantinople. who also, in addition to the deposition, being cast out by the shoves and kicks of those under Dioscorus, on the third day departed this life. 101 And on the next day the bishops were forced to sign by the violence of soldiers and swords. And Domnus, bishop of the Antiochenes, having signed by force and having come to himself, opposed Dioscorus and cried out against the rulers for the things that had been done, calling the synod an impiety and seeking to take back his own signature. Learning these things, Pope Leo approaches the emperor Valentinian and the augustae with tears, asking for letters to the emperor Theodosius, that a correction be made of the things done unlawfully and uncanonically in Ephesus. But he wrote back to his daughter Eudoxia thus: "I wish to make this known to your sweetness, that Flavian was cast out of the churches by divine judgment as the cause of many disturbances." And Dioscorus deposed also Theodoret and Ibas and Andrew and Domnus of Antioch and other eastern bishops in their absence. And Theodosius the emperor was fickle, carried by every wind, wherefore he also often signed unread documents; among which also the most wise Pulcheria submitted an unread deed of gift, handing over to slavery Eudocia, the
