κεν. For here scripture rather abbreviated the things concerning Terah, joining them together, both the things before Abraham's journey to the land of Canaan and the things after the journey, which were, as is shown, from the 140th year until the 205th year of his death. For it says that “And all the days of Terah in Haran were 205 years, and Terah died in Haran” instead of saying that he lived there until death. For indeed, not all the 205 years of his life were in Haran. Then it adds, “And the Lord said to Abram: Go out from your land” and the rest, specifying that Abraham was 75 years old when he went out from Haran, having been born in the seventieth year of Terah, which together make 145 of Terah's life, at which time he also came to Haran in the land of the Chaldeans. Not only from this is it demonstrated to us that God told Abraham to go out from his land before the death of Terah, but also from the things said by the first martyr, that before he dwelt in Haran, God appeared to him in Mesopotamia, that is, in the land of the Chaldeans. Therefore it will be correctly understood that Abraham was not given the oracle after the death of Terah, but while he was still in his homeland, dedicated to God and turning away from the idols of his father, as is recorded in many places, which he also set on fire by night, as they say, and Haran his brother was burned with them, wanting to extinguish the fire in the presence of Terah, as they say, Scripture also hints at this, that “And Haran died in the presence of his father Terah in the land where he was born, in the country of the Chaldeans,” in the city of Sur. So that from all these things it is shown that both Terah and the rest went out with Abraham, promising to journey with him to the land of Canaan, as Scripture says, we understanding, clearly, by the exhortations of the patriarch Abraham; but having come to Haran, which is full of idols even until now, they settled there because of avarice and idolatry, and so Abraham, seeing them dead 108 in soul and not wanting to be co-heirs with him of the divine promises, disbelieving God, was removed by God after the death of his father, the spiritual one that is, to the land of promise. For thus also our Lord knows as dead those who do not believe in him, even if they live this temporary life, as he says somewhere: “Let the dead bury their own dead.” And these things we have understood according to our ability for the solution of the proposed difficulty, so that the book of Genesis and of Acts might be in agreement, both dictated by the same divine Spirit and in no way differing from the other in truth. But if anyone cares to discover some other more harmonious meaning for the present difficulty, we too will be persuaded by it, confessing it for the sake of benefit.
