having received them, they forgot the one who created them. However, all the ends of the earth, not one nation, nor two, but myriads from all throughout the world will run to him, and will eagerly receive the ray of the knowledge of God. "And all the families of the nations shall worship before him." And teaching that the dominion belongs to God, and is not foreign, he has set it forth. 80.1024 29. "For the kingdom is the Lord’s, and he rules over the nations." For God is not God of the Jews only, as they think, but the maker of the whole nature of humankind. Thus the Apostle also said: "Is he the God of the Jews only? Is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also: Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith." 30. "All the rich of the earth have eaten and worshipped him; all those who go down to the earth shall fall down before him." For those who have eaten and been filled, giving thanks for the immortal food, will worship as God the one who became the provider of these things. And since in the preceding verse he mentioned only the rich, since they were such as were produced by that divine food, he rightly said: "All those who go down to the earth shall fall down before him." For after the resurrection from the dead, some willingly, some unwillingly, and some with longing, others with fear, will offer this worship to God, according to that apostolic voice: that "at his name every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." 31. "And my soul lives for him, and my seed shall serve him." The seed of the Lord Christ are those who are reborn through the regeneration of the bath, and receive the grace of adoption. Therefore he said that his own soul lives for him, but does not serve, while his seed serves. For the nature that was taken was united to the divinity that took it, and shared in the same glory and honor. 32. "The generation to come shall be declared to the Lord, and they shall declare his righteousness to a people that shall be born, whom the Lord has made." Not about this generation, he says, do I speak, in which I, David, foretell these things, but about the one to come, and of the people to be born, whom the Lord of all himself established. He, therefore, foretold all these things. But I lament the foolishness of the Jews, because while constantly reading the divine oracles, they do not see the truth shining forth in them, but declare that the Psalm was spoken of David, though they hear him crying out, "The generation to come shall be declared to the Lord, and they shall declare his righteousness to a people that shall be born, 80.1025 whom the Lord has made; all the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord; and all the families of the nations shall worship before him. And all the rich of the earth have eaten and worshipped him." For we see none of these things having happened in the time of David, nor in that of any of David's descendants. But only the Lord Christ, who is from David according to the flesh, the incarnate God the Word, who took from David the form of a servant; for he filled all the earth and sea with the knowledge of God, and persuaded those who formerly wandered and offered worship to idols, to worship the true God instead of those which are not. But leaving the arguments against the Jews, let us proceed to the present contests, and to the interpretation of the remaining psalms.
INTERPRETATION OF THE 22ND PSALM. 1. For the end, a psalm of David." [The preceding psalm is sung from the person of the gentiles rejoicing that he shepherds them; and indeed they also explain the mystical feast which the one shepherding them has set before them.] "The Lord is my shepherd, and I shall want nothing." These things also have the same as the
