of the emperor Verus clearly recorded all things, both the names and the times. Therefore, the annual magistrates of the Romans, as we say, held power for 463 years. Then those called emperors ruled as follows: first Gaius Julius, who reigned 3 years, 7 months, 6 days. Then Augustus, 50 years, 4 months, 1 day. Tiberius, 22 years, months, 20 days. Then another Gaius, 3 years, 10 months, 7 days. Claudius, 13 years, 8 months, 20 days. Nero, 13 years, 7 months, 27 days. Galba, seven months, days. Otho, 3 months, 5 days. Vitellius, 8 months, 2 days. Vespasian, 9 years, 11 months, 22 days. Titus, 2 years, 2 months, 20 days. Domitian, 15 years, 5 days. Nerva, one year, 4 months, 10 days. Trajan, 19 years, six months, 14 days. Hadrian, 20 years, 10 months, 28 days. Antoninus, 22 years, 7 months, 20 days. Verus, 19 years, 10 days. Therefore, the time of the Caesars until the death of the emperor Verus is 225 years. Therefore, from the reign of Cyrus until the death of the emperor Verus, of whom we have spoken before, the whole time amounts to 741 years. And from the foundation of the world the whole time in summary is reckoned thus. from the creation of the world until the flood there were 2242 years. and from the flood until the begetting of a son by Abraham our forefather, 1030 years. and from Isaac the son of Abraham until the people sojourned with Moses in the desert, 660 years. and from the death of Moses, the rule of Jesus son of Nave, until the death of David the patriarch, 498 years. and from the death of David, and the reign of Solomon, until the sojourning of the people in the land of Babylon, 518 years, months, 10 days. and from the reign of Cyrus until the death of the emperor Aurelius Verus, 741 years. Altogether from the creation of the world all things amount to 5695 years, and the additional months and days. Therefore, with the times and all that has been said summed up, it is possible to see the antiquity of the prophetic writings and the divinity of the word among us, that the word is not recent, nor indeed are our matters, as some suppose, fabulous and false, but rather more ancient and more true. For indeed Thallus makes mention of Belus who reigned over the Assyrians and of Cronus the Titan, saying that Belus had warred with the Titans against Zeus and those with him called gods, where he says, "And Ogygus, having been defeated, fled to Tartessus, at that time indeed that country being called Acte, but now being named Attica, of which Ogygus then was ruler." And the remaining countries and cities from which they got their names, we do not think it necessary to enumerate, especially to you who knows the histories. That, therefore, Moses is shown to be more ancient than all writers (not he alone, but also the many prophets who came after him) and than Cronus and Belus and the Trojan war, is clear. For according to
