And Nikephoros the youngest brother was appointed *megas droungarios* of the fleet and he too was raised to the rank of the *sebastoi*. 3.4.3 The innovation of these dignities my father devised in addition, partly by creating them, as was said above, and partly by adapting them. For he created *panhypersebastos* and *sebastokrator* and other such titles, but he appears to have adapted the dignity of *sebastos*. For from of old the emperors were called *Sebastoi* as an epithet, and the name of *sebastos* was said exclusively of an emperor; but he was the first to lower this dignity into more common use. For if one were to elevate the emperorship to a science and a certain supreme philosophy, as being the art of arts and science of sciences, one would admire my father as a kind of scientist and master-builder innovating in both matters and names under his rule; except that the masters of the logical sciences devised such names for the sake of clarity, while this monarch of science of the empire, Alexios, administered everything for the advantage of the empire, often making strange innovations both in the ordering of affairs and in the naming of titles. 3.4.4 However, that venerable man and patriarch, Kosmas, whom we have mentioned before, some days later, on the feast of the hierarch John the Theologian, having celebrated the holy rite in the shrine at Hebdomon named after the aforementioned, having graced the patriarchal throne for five years and nine months, resigned the patriarchate and departed to the monastery of Kallios. The helm of the patriarchate was entrusted after him to the aforementioned eunuch, Eustratios Garidas. 3.4.5 Since Constantine the porphyrogennetos, the son of the Empress Maria, after the dissolution of the reign of his father, Michael Doukas, had willingly taken off the red sandals, and put on common black ones, Nikephoros Botaneiates, who had taken up the sceptres after Doukas, Constantine's father, ordered him to put away the black ones, and commanded that footwear of varied silken fabrics be worn, as if feeling respect for the young man and admiring at once his beauty and his lineage. For he seemed to begrudge him sandals that flashed entirely red, but allowed certain parts of the fabrics to bloom with red. 3.4.6 After the accession of Alexios Komnenos, the Empress Maria, his mother, persuaded by the advice of the Caesar, requested a written pledge to be confirmed by red letters and a golden seal from the emperor, so that she would not only be kept safe with her son, but also that he would reign with him, wearing the red sandals and crowned, and proclaimed as emperor with him. And she did not fail in her request, but received a golden bull confirming all her wishes. Then, taking off the footwear of silken fabrics which he wore, they gave him the entirely red footwear, and in donations and golden bulls he was henceforth the second co-signer in cinnabar with the Emperor Alexios, and in processions he followed along with the imperial tiara. And as some said, the Empress had made agreements about this even before the rebellion, so that matters concerning her son might turn out thus. 3.4.7 Thus she departed from the palace with a worthy procession, to take up residence in the buildings in the monastery of the great martyr George constructed by the deceased Emperor Constantine Monomachos (the common speech still calls this the Mangana), with Isaac the sebastokrator accompanying her.
