the Lord. 9.7.2 But they had their prey inside the nets, without knowing it: dogs the ram, wolves the lamb, birds of prey with hooked talons the dove; and as the prophet Isaiah says, the kid rested with the leopards, and the lamb grazed with the wolves, and the lions shared a common life with the calf. And when, as is wont to happen, the table and familiarity provided them confidence with one another, the martyr inquired of them who they were and for what reason they had come to his city. 9.7.3 But they, respecting the man's eager welcome and hospitality, and instructing him to tell no one what was about to be said, made known to him the secret and declared the drama of the plot, that they were seeking Phocas for punishment; and they asked that he add this service to his hospitality: to assist them in the hunt for the one being sought. 9.8.1 The servant of the Lord heard, and receiving the news with a steadfast soul, he suffered nothing base or unmanly, nor did he, fearing the danger, decide to flee, and this though he had much and ample opportunity to escape; but quite the contrary, he consented to their request. "I too," he says, "will help you in the matter at hand. For I know the man and, having easily sought him out, I will inform on him; and this not long from now, but after one day; only you rest here in this poor lodging." 9.8.2 And having thus guaranteed them his firm promise, he divided himself between two tasks: the reception of his own murderers and the preparation of his grave. And having prepared both the pit and the necessities for his burial, he approached them the next day, saying, "I have diligently searched for Phocas, and the prey is ready; and, if you please, let him be seized." And when they said out of extreme joy, "And where is the man?" "Not far," he says, "but with you; I myself am he; so carry out your command and fulfill the purpose of your journey and toil." 9.8.3 The men were struck in their souls and were stunned at what they heard, remembering the salt and the table and the generous host in his poverty. But he exhorted them to the audacity of the execution and urged them not to hesitate even for a moment, saying that the murder was not from their hand, but was the work of those who had commanded it. He spoke, he persuaded, he suffered; and having been beheaded, he was offered as a pleasing sacrifice to God. 9.9.1 A pillar and support of the churches of God from that time until now we have him, O people; and he is the most illustrious of martyrs, holding the first place among the best and the blessed. For star differs from star in glory, both according to common opinion and according to the voice of the chosen vessel; and indeed he is especially and most renowned among the saints throughout the whole world. 9.9.2 And he draws and drives all to his own lodging; and the main roads are full of those from every country hastening to the place of prayer. That magnificent temple, then, is a relief for the afflicted, a resource for the poor, a hospital for the sick, an Egypt for the starving. 9.9.3 And Phocas in death provides nourishment more lavishly than Joseph in life; for the former exchanged grain for silver, but the latter bestows it as a gift to those in need. And just as doves in the winter season, when food is hard to come by, flying over newly sown fields, settle in their furrows, so all the tribes of the poor and wandering run to the isthmus of Sinope as to a common storehouse. 9.9.4 And if somewhere else also through small relics the martyr has established for himself a kind of colony from a mother-city, this place too is wondrous and eagerly sought by all Christians, just as indeed this sacred space here with us is a lodging for those celebrating a feast. For precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints; and the relics, though divided in many places, everywhere preserve the praise for the thrice-blessed one whole. 9.10.1 So, therefore, also

Γινώσκω γὰρ τὸν ἄνδρα καὶ ῥᾳδίως ἀναζητήσας καταμηνύσω· οὐκ εἰς μακρὰν δὲ τοῦτο, ἀλλὰ μετὰ μίαν ἡμέραν· μόνον ὑμεῖς ἐπὶ τῆς πενιχρᾶς ταύτης καταγωγῆς ἀναπαύεσθε. 9.8.2 Βεβαίαν δὲ οὕτως αὐτοῖς ἐγγυησάμενος τὴν ὑπόσχεσιν δύο πράγμασι ἑαυτὸν κατεμέρισε, τῇ δεξιώσει τῶν ἑαυτοῦ φονέων καὶ τῇ ἑτοιμασίᾳ τοῦ τάφου. Εὐτρεπίσας δὲ τό τε ὄρυγμα καὶ τὰ περὶ τὴν ταφὴν ἀναγκαῖα, προσελθὼν αὐτοῖς τῇ ὑστεραίᾳ, Ἐπιμελῶς, φησί, τὸν Φωκᾶν ἀνεζήτησα καὶ ἕτοιμον τὸ θήραμα· καί, εἰ δοκεῖ, συλληφθήτω. Τῶν δὲ εἰπόντων ἐκ περιχαρείας· Καὶ ποῦ ὁ ἀνήρ; Οὐ πόρρω, φησίν, ἀλλὰ μεθ' ὑμῶν· αὐτὸς δὲ ὑμῖν οὗτος ἐγώ· καὶ χρήσασθε τῷ προστάγματι καὶ πληρώσατε τὸν τῆς ὁδοιπορίας καὶ τοῦ πόνου σκοπόν. 9.8.3 Ἐπλήγησαν τὰς ψυχὰς οἱ ἄνθρωποι καὶ πρὸς τὴν ἀκοὴν ἐπαχνώθησαν τοὺς ἅλας καὶ τὴν τράπεζαν ἐννοήσαντες καὶ τὸν ἐν πενίᾳ φιλότιμον ἑστιάτορα. Ὁ δὲ παρεκάλει πρὸς τὴν τόλμαν τῆς ἀναιρέσεως καὶ μηδὲ πρὸς ὀλίγον διστά ζειν ἐπεκελεύετο λέγων ὡς οὐ τῆς ἐκείνων χειρὸς ὁ φόνος, ἀλλὰ τῶν προσταξάντων τὸ ἔργον. Εἶπεν, ἔπεισεν, ἔπαθεν· καὶ τὴν κεφαλὴν ἀποτμηθεὶς ἱερεῖον τῷ Θεῷ κεχαρισμένον προσήχθη. 9.9.1 Στύλον καὶ ἔρεισμα τῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐκκλησιῶν ἐξ ἐκείνου μέχρι νῦν τοῦτον ἔχομεν, ἄνθρωποι· καὶ μαρτύρων ἐστὶν οὗτος ὁ περιφανέστατος ἐν τοῖς ἀρίστοις καὶ μακαριστοῖς τὸ πρωτεῖον ἔχων. Ἀστὴρ γὰρ ἀστέρος διαφέρει ἐν δόξῃ, κατά τε τὴν κοινὴν ὑπόληψιν καὶ κατὰ τὴν φωνὴν τοῦ σκεύους τῆς ἐκλογῆς· καὶ μάλιστα δὴ πανταχοῦ τῆς οἰκουμένης καὶ ὀνομαστότατος ἐν τοῖς ἁγίοις ἐστί. 9.9.2 Καὶ πάντας ἕλκει καὶ συνελαύνει πρὸς τὸ ἑαυτοῦ καταγώγιον· καὶ γέμουσιν αἱ λεωφόροι τῶν ἀφ' ἑκάστης χώρας πρὸς τὸν τόπον ἐπειγομένων τῆς προσευχῆς. Ἔστι γ' οὖν ὁ μεγαλοπρεπὴς ἐκεῖνος ναὸς θλιβομένων ἄνεσις, πενομένων πόρος, κακουμένων ἰατρεῖον, λιμωττόντων Αἴγυπτος. 9.9.3 Καὶ δαψι λέστερον τρέφει Φωκᾶς τελευτήσας ἤπερ ζῶν Ἰωσήφ· ἐκεῖνος μὲν γὰρ ἀργυρίου τὸν σῖτον διήμειβεν, οὗτος δὲ προῖκα τοῖς δεομένοις χαρίζεται. Καὶ ὥσπερ αἱ περιστεραὶ κατὰ τὴν χειμέριον ὥραν δυσπορίστου τῆς τροφῆς τυγχανούσης τὰς νεοσπόρους ἐφιπτάμεναι χώρας ταῖς αὔλαξιν ἐκείνων ἐγκάθηνται, οὕτως πάντων τῶν πτωχῶν καὶ ἀλητευόντων τὰ φῦλα προστρέχει τῷ τῆς Σινώπης ἰσθμῷ καθάπερ κοινῷ ταμιείῳ. 9.9.4 Εἰ δέ που καὶ ἀλλαχοῦ διὰ μικρῶν λειψάνων οἷον ἀποικίαν τινὰ μητροπόλεως ὁ μάρτυς ἑαυτῷ κατεστήσατο, θαυμαστὸς καὶ οὗτος ὁ τόπος καὶ πᾶσι χριστιανοῖς περισπούδαστος, ὥσπερ δὴ καὶ οὗτος ὁ παρ' ἡμῖν χῶρος ἱερὸς καταγώγιον ἑορταζόντων.
