Aquila: "who will not endure a man and will not wait for sons of men". 2.3.153 through which all the hope of the apostles of our Savior was not in a man but in their Savior and Lord; and this was the Word of God. 2.3.154 to whom he adds next: "And the remnant of Jacob shall be among the nations, in the midst of many peoples, as a lion among the beasts of the forest and as a young lion among flocks of sheep, which, when it passes through and separates and seizes, there is none to deliver." Through these words I think is shown the boldness and fearlessness of the apostolic proclamation; 2.3.155 for like a lion and a young lion, bursting into the forest of the nations and into the flocks of human sheep, and separating the worthy from the unworthy, they brought them under the word of Christ. To whom next are proclaimed the things from him: "Your hand shall be lifted up against those who afflict you, and all your enemies shall be utterly destroyed." which it is also possible to see with our eyes; for though countless ones have afflicted the word of Christ and are still warring against it, it has been exalted and has become stronger than all. 2.3.156 But the hand of Christ was also lifted up against all those who afflicted him, and all his enemies who from time to time rise up against his church are said to be utterly destroyed. 2.3.157 52. From Zephaniah. "For then I will turn to the peoples a language, in the name of the Lord, to serve him under one yoke. From the ends of the rivers of Ethiopia I will receive those who supplicate me, of the dispersed they shall bring sacrifices to me. In that day you shall not be put to shame for all your practices wherein you acted impiously against me; for then I will take away from you the blemishes of your insolence, and you shall no more be added to boast upon my holy mountain. And I will leave in you a meek and humble people, 2.3.158 and the remnant of Israel shall fear in the name of the Lord, and they will not do injustice and they will not speak vain things, and a deceitful tongue shall not be found in their mouth, because they themselves shall feed and lie down, and there shall be no one to make them afraid." 2.3.159 And in these words the Lord has promised to leave for himself "a meek and humble people," indicating none other than the one from the circumcision who has believed in his Christ. And again, that only the remnant of Israel will be saved with the calling of the rest of the nations, which he signified in the first parts of the prophecy. 2.3.160 53. From Zechariah. "Behold, a day is coming upon you, and your spoils shall be divided in you. And I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem to war, and the city shall be captured, and the houses plundered, and the women defiled, and half of the city shall go into captivity, but the remnant of my people shall not be utterly destroyed from the city." 2.3.161 These things also are in harmony with what was set forth before, fulfilled in the destruction of the whole nation of the Jews that came upon them after the coming of Christ. Therefore after the return from Babylon Zechariah prophesies these things, proclaiming the final siege of the people that would happen under the Romans, at which time the whole nation of the Jews would become subject to their enemies, he says that only "the remnant" of the people would be saved, clearly indicating the apostles of our Savior themselves. 2.3.162 54. From Jeremiah. "Return, O backsliding children, says the Lord, for I will be your Lord, and I will take you one from a city and two from a family and I will bring you to Zion, and I will give you shepherds according to my heart, and they will shepherd you, shepherding with knowledge. And it shall be, if you are multiplied and increased, says the Lord, in those days, they will no longer say, 'the ark of the covenant of the Lord of Israel' it will not come to mind, nor will it be named or made any more." 2.3.163 Likewise also in these things he proclaims the return of Israel that would happen at the coming of our Savior Jesus Christ, at which "one from a city and two from a family" and exceedingly

2.3.157 νβʹ.
