of the apostles, the shunning of the envied woman, and continence from coveted pleasures taught to misuse the flesh. For, I think, he did not wish according to the command of the savior 3.29.4 to serve two masters, pleasure and the Lord. They say, therefore, that Matthias also taught thus, to fight the flesh and misuse it, yielding nothing to it for pleasure, but to augment the soul through faith and knowledge.” Let these things, therefore, be said concerning those who, in the times indicated, attempted to corrupt the truth, but who, quicker than speech, were utterly extinguished; 3.30.1 But Clement, whose words we have just read, next after the foregoing, on account of those who reject marriage, catalogues those of the apostles who are ascertained to have been in the married state, saying: “Or will they reject the apostles too? For Peter and Philip begat children; and Philip also gave his daughters in marriage. And Paul does not hesitate in one of his epistles to address his wife, whom he did not take about with him, for the sake of the convenience of his ministry.” 3.30.2 And since we have mentioned these things, it will not be amiss to quote another story from the same author that is worth telling, which he recorded in the seventh book of his Stromata, relating it in the following manner: “They say, indeed, that the blessed Peter, on seeing his own wife led away to death, rejoiced on account of her call and her return home, and called to her very exhortingly and comfortingly, addressing her by name: ‘Remember, O thou, the Lord.’ Such was the marriage of the blessed, and their perfect disposition toward those dearest to them.” And let these things, being pertinent to the subject in hand, be opportunely placed here by me. 3.31.1 Now, of the death of Paul and Peter, both the time and the manner, and furthermore the place of the deposition of their tabernacles after their departure from life, has already been shown by us previously; but of John, something of his time has already been said, 3.31.2 but the place of his tabernacle is shown from a letter of Polycrates (he was bishop of the parish in Ephesus), which, writing to Victor, bishop of the Romans, he mentions both him and Philip the apostle and his daughters, in this way: 3.31.3 “For in Asia also great lights have fallen asleep, which shall rise again on the last day of the coming of the Lord, in which he comes with glory from heaven and will seek out all the saints, Philip, one of the twelve apostles, who has fallen asleep in Hierapolis, and two of his daughters who grew old as virgins, and his other daughter, having lived her life in the Holy Spirit, rests in Ephesus. And moreover John, who leaned on the Lord's breast, who became a priest wearing the petalon, and a martyr and a teacher, he has fallen asleep in Ephesus.” 3.31.4 So much for their death. And in the dialogue of Gaius, whom we mentioned a little before, Proclus, with whom he was carrying on the dispute, concerning the death of Philip and his daughters, agreeing with what has been stated, says thus: “After him there were four prophetesses, the daughters of Philip, in Hierapolis in Asia. Their tomb is there, and that of their father.” 3.31.5 So he says. But Luke in the Acts of the Apostles mentions the daughters of Philip as staying at that time in Caesarea of Judea with their father, and as having been deemed worthy of the prophetic gift, speaking word for word thus: “we came to Caesarea, and entering into the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, we abode with him. Now this man 3.31.6 had four virgin daughters, who prophesied.” Having in these sections set forth what has come to our knowledge concerning both the apostles and the apostolic times, both what sacred writings they have left us, and what are disputed but nevertheless have been used publicly by many in most churches, and what are altogether spurious and alien to the apostolic orthodoxy, on to what follows
