So Constantine himself, going about, prepared a tomb for himself, 2.34.6 and from this, as from a certain beginning of a custom that had arisen, the Christian emperors who died after this in Constantinople are buried there, and not only them, but also bishops, since, I think, the priesthood is of equal honor with the empire, or rather, indeed, holding the first place in sacred matters.
3.t.1 OF THE SAME, ECCLESIASTICAL HISTORY, BOOK THREE 3.1.1 The events that happened to the churches during the reign of Constantine
were thus. But when he died, the dogma of those who had assembled at Nicaea was again brought into question; for even if not all accepted it, 3.1.2 while Constantine was still alive no one dared to openly reject it. But when he died, many apostatized from this doctrine; these were the ones who had even before been suspected of betraying it; and most of all, Eusebius and Theognius of Bithynia made the greatest 3.1.3 effort to establish the doctrine of Arius. They thought they would accomplish this easily, if they could prevent the return of Athanasius from exile, and hand over the churches in Egypt to someone of their own opinion. And they labored at this, having as their agent the presbyter who had been the cause of Arius's recall under Constantine. For he happened to be in favor with the Emperor Constantius, because he had preserved his father's will for him. 3.1.4 As a trusted person he gained influence even with the emperor's wife, and became an intimate of the powerful chamberlain eunuchs; Eusebius was at that time the head of the imperial household, who, having become a promoter of the Arian doctrine, made the empress and many of those about the palace like-minded with himself. 3.1.5 And from this, frequent discussions, both private and public, again arose concerning the dogma, and with them insults and animosities. And the affair proceeded according to the mind of Theognius and his party.
3.2.1 At this time Athanasius returned from the western part of Galatia to Alexandria. Constantine, while still alive, had determined to recall him; and it is said that he had expressed this wish in his will; but since death came first, his son of the same name, who ruled over the western Gauls, permitted his return, giving him letters to the people of 3.2.2 Alexandria.
