so great a time having passed has not extinguished her glory, but we all still sing of her, and now we marvel, because from that time she has become a most excellent harbor for all who sin, not allowing them to fall into despair, but calling all to repentance, and through what she did, and through what she enjoyed of God's providence, persuading them never to despair of their own salvation, but by displaying a most excellent life, and by putting forward good hope to be confident about the end as being in every way good. For who would not be roused, hearing their example, even if he were the most sluggish of all? God chose, then, for His own prediction to fail, rather than for the city to fall; or rather, not even the prophecy failed. For if, while the people remained in the same wickedness, the things of the sentence were not carried into effect, someone perhaps might have had a charge to bring against what was said; but if, when they changed, and desisted from the cause, God also desisted from His wrath, who will then be able to find fault with the prophecy, and to condemn what was said as false? For indeed the law, which God from the beginning established through the prophet speaking to all men, this He also maintained then. What then is the law? I will speak a final word, he says, against a nation and against a kingdom to root them out, and to tear down and to destroy; and it shall be, if they repent from their wickedness, I also will repent of the wrath, which I spoke of doing to them. Keeping this law, therefore, He saved them when they changed, and delivered from His wrath those who had desisted from their wickedness. He knew the virtue of the barbarians, for this reason He urged on the prophet; so also then the city was shaken, hearing the prophetic voice, but was not harmed in any way, but was even benefited by the fear. For that fear gave birth to salvation; the threat loosed the danger; the sentence of destruction stayed the destruction. O new and paradoxical matter! A sentence threatening death gave birth to life. A sentence after it was brought forth, then became invalid, contrary to those who judge outwardly; for among these, the bringing forth of the vote into the midst makes the vote become valid, but in God's case, on the contrary, the bringing forth of the vote is what made it invalid. For if it had not been brought forth, the sinners would not have heard; and if they had not heard, they would not have repelled the punishment, they would not have enjoyed that paradoxical salvation. For how is it not paradoxical, when the judge pronounces, but the condemned annul the sentence through repentance? for they did not flee the city as we do now, but remaining, they stood firm. It was a snare, and they made it a wall; it was a pit and a precipice, and they constructed it into a tower of safety. They heard that the buildings would fall, and they did not flee the buildings, but they fled their sins; they did not each depart from his own house as we do now, but they each departed from his own wicked way. For did the walls, he says, give birth to the wrath? We are the cause of the wound, let us prepare the remedy. For this reason they entrusted their salvation not to changes of places 49.77, but to a change of ways.

6. These things the barbarians did, and are we not ashamed nor do we cover our faces, when they changed their ways, we change our places, and do the works of drunken men, and put away our possessions? The Master is angry with us, and we; leaving aside putting an end to the anger, we turn the things of the house about and go around, seeking where we may deposit our property, when we ought to be seeking where we may entrust our soul; or rather, we ought not even to seek, but by virtue and uprightness of life to commit its safety. For not even if, when we were angry and indignant with a servant, he, neglecting to defend himself against our anger, went down to his own little room, gathered all his clothes and furniture and tied them up, and was planning for flight, would we have borne this contempt meekly. Let us cease therefore from this untimely zeal, and let each one say to the

Εἰ μὲν γὰρ ἐπὶ τῆς αὐτῆς πονηρίας τῶν ἀνθρώπων μενόντων οὐκ ἐξέβη εἰς ἔργον τὰ τῆς ἀποφάσεως, εἶχεν ἴσως ἄν τις ἐγκαλεῖν τοῖς εἰρημένοις· εἰ δὲ μεταβαλομένων αὐτῶν, καὶ τῆς αἰτίας ἀποστάντων, ἀπέστη καὶ τῆς ὀργῆς ὁ Θεὸς, τίς δυνήσεται λοιπὸν ἐπιλαβέσθαι τῆς προφητείας, καὶ καταγνῶναι ψεῦδος τῶν εἰρημένων; Καὶ γὰρ τὸν νόμον, ὃν ἐξ ἀρχῆς ἔθηκεν ὁ Θεὸς διὰ τοῦ προφήτου πᾶσιν ἀνθρώποις διαλεγόμενος, τοῦτον καὶ τότε διετήρησε. Ἀπόφασις μετὰ τὸ ἐξενεχθῆναι, τότε ἄκυρος γέγονεν ἀπεναντίας τοῖς ἔξωθεν δικάζουσιν· ἐπὶ μὲν γὰρ τούτων τὸ προενεχθῆναι τὴν ψῆφον εἰς μέσον κυρίαν ποιεῖ τὴν ψῆφον γενέσθαι, ἐπὶ δὲ τοῦ Θεοῦ τοὐναντίον τὸ προενεχθῆναι τὴν ψῆφον, τοῦτό ἐστι τὸ ποιῆσαν αὐτὴν ἄκυρον. Εἰ γὰρ μὴ προηνέχθη, οὐκ ἂν ἤκουσαν οἱ ἡμαρτηκότες· εἰ δὲ μὴ ἤκουσαν, οὐκ ἂν ἀπεκρούσαντο τὴν τιμωρίαν, οὐκ ἂν ἀπήλαυσαν τῆς παραδόξου σωτηρίας ἐκείνης. Πῶς γὰρ οὐ παράδοξος, ὅταν ὁ μὲν δικαστὴς ἀποφαίνηται, οἱ δὲ κατάδικοι τὴν ἀπόφασιν λύωσι διὰ τῆς μετανοίας; οὐ γὰρ ἔφυγον τὴν πόλιν καθάπερ καὶ ἡμεῖς νῦν, ἀλλὰ μένοντες ἔστησαν. Παγὶς ἦν, καὶ τεῖχος αὐτὴν ἐποίησαν· βάραθρον ἦν καὶ κρημνὸς, καὶ πύργον αὐτὴν ἀσφαλείας κατεσκεύασαν. Ἤκουσαν ὅτι πεσεῖται τὰ οἰκοδομήματα, καὶ οὐκ ἔφυγον τὰ οἰκοδομήματα, ἀλλ' ἔφυγον τὰ ἁμαρτήματα· οὐκ ἀπέστησαν ἕκαστος ἀπὸ τῆς οἰκίας αὐτοῦ καθάπερ ἡμεῖς νῦν, ἀλλ' ἀπέστησαν ἕκαστος ἀπὸ τῆς ὁδοῦ αὐτοῦ τῆς πονηρᾶς. Μὴ γὰρ οἱ τοῖχοι, φησὶ, τὴν ὀργὴν ἔτεκον; ἡμεῖς αἴτιοι τοῦ τραύματος, ἡμεῖς τὸ φάρμακον κατασκευάσωμεν. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο οὐ τόπων 49.77 ἐναλλαγαῖς, ἀλλὰ τρόπων μεταβολῇ τὴν σωτηρίαν ἐπίστευσαν.

Ταῦτα οἱ βάρβαροι, καὶ οὐκ αἰσχυνόμεθα οὐδὲ ἐγκαλυπτόμεθα, ἐκείνων τρόπους μεταβαλόντων, ἡμεῖς τόπους ἀμείβοντες, καὶ μεθυόντων ἀνθρώπων ἔργα ποιοῦντες, καὶ τὰς οὐσίας ὑπεκτιθέντες; Ὁ ∆εσπότης ἡμῖν ὀργίζεται, καὶ ἡμεῖς· ἀφέντες καταλῦσαι τὴν ὀργὴν, τὰ τῆς οἰκίας περιστρέφομεν καὶ περιερχόμεθα, ζητοῦντες ποῦ καταθώμεθα τὴν οὐσίαν, δέον ζητεῖν ποῦ τὴν ψυχὴν παρακαταθώμεθα· μᾶλλον δὲ οὐδὲ χρὴ ζητεῖν, ἀλλ' ἀρετῇ καὶ ὀρθότητι βίου τὴν ἀσφάλειαν αὐτῆς ἐγχειρίζειν. Οὐδὲ γὰρ εἰ πρὸς οἰκέτην ὀργιζομένων καὶ ἀγανακτούντων ἡμῶν, τὸ πρὸς τὴν ὀργὴν ἀπολογήσασθαι ἀφεὶς ἐκεῖνος εἰς τὸν οἰκίσκον τὸν ἑαυτοῦ κατελθὼν, τὰ ἱμάτια καὶ τὰ ἔπιπλα πάντα συναγαγὼν καὶ καταδήσας, περὶ φυγῆς ἐβουλεύετο, πράως ἂν ἠνέγκαμεν τὴν καταφρόνησιν ταύτην. Παυσώμεθα τοίνυν τῆς ἀκαίρου ταύτης σπουδῆς, καὶ εἴπωμεν ἕκαστος πρὸς τὸν
