and when the matters become manifest, it is refuted. One must therefore keep the mind on the matters and know toward which one it has the passion.
3.79 (οθ') He is a genuine friend who in a time of trial bears together with his neighbor the afflictions and necessities and misfortunes arising from circumstance, as if they were his own, without noise and without disturbance.
3.80 (π') Do not dishonor your conscience, which always gives you the best counsel; 14__300 for it suggests to you divine and angelic thought, and frees you from the hidden defilements of the heart, and grants you boldness before God at your departure.
3.81 (πα') If you wish to become discerning and moderate and not be enslaved to the passion of conceit, always seek in existing things what is hidden from your knowledge. And finding very many and various things that escape you, you will marvel at your own ignorance and restrain your pride, and having come to know yourself, you will understand many great and wonderful things; since thinking that one knows does not allow one to advance to knowing.
3.82 (πβ') He truly wants to be saved, who does not resist the medicinal remedies; and these are pains and griefs brought on through various afflictions. But he who resists does not know what is being worked out here, nor with what benefit he will depart from here.
3.83 (πγ') Vainglory and love of money beget one another; for the vainglorious become rich, and the rich become vainglorious, but as worldly people; since the monk, being without possessions, is more vainglorious; but having money, he hides it, being ashamed of having something improper to his habit.
3.84 (πδ') It is peculiar to the vainglory of the monk to be vainglorious about virtue and the things that follow it; and it is peculiar to his pride to be exalted by his achievements and to despise others and to ascribe these things to himself and not to God. And it is peculiar to the 14__302 vainglory and pride of the worldly person to be vainglorious and exalted over beauty and wealth and power and intelligence.
3.85 (πε') The achievements of worldly people are the falls of monks; and the achievements of monks are the falls of worldly people. For instance, the achievements of worldly people are wealth and glory and power and luxury and robustness and fruitfulness in children and the things that follow these; into which a monk, having come, is destroyed. But the achievements of the monk are non-possession, ignominy, powerlessness, continence, hardship, and the things that follow these; into which the lover of the world, having come against his purpose, considers it a great fall and is often in danger of even using a noose; and some have even used one.
3.86 (πστ') Foods were created for two reasons: for nourishment and for healing. Therefore, those who partake of them apart from these, as misusing the things given by God for use, are condemned as self-indulgent; and indeed, with all things, misuse is sin.
3.87 (πζ') Humility is continuous prayer with tears and labors; for it, always calling upon God for help, does not permit one to foolishly trust in one's own power and wisdom, nor to be exalted over others, which are severe diseases of the passion of pride.
3.88 (πη') It is one thing to fight against a bare thought, so that it does not stir the passion; and it is another thing to fight against a passionate one, so that assent does not occur. But both ways do not permit the thoughts to linger.
14__304 3.89 (πθ') Grief is yoked with remembrance of wrongs; whenever, therefore, the mind beholds the face of the brother with grief, it is clear that it holds a remembrance of wrongs against him. But the ways of those who remember wrongs lead to death, because everyone who remembers wrongs is a transgressor.

3.79 (οθ') Φίλος ἐκεῖνός ἐστι γνήσιος ὁ τὰς ἐκ περιστάσεως θλίψεις καὶ ἀνάγκας καὶ συμφορὰς ἐν καιρῷ πειρασμοῦ συνυποφέρων τῷ πλησίον ὡς ἰδίας ἀθορύβως καὶ ἀταράχως.

Καὶ εὑρίσκων πάμπολλα καὶ διάφορα πράγματα λανθάνοντά σε, θαυμάσεις τε ἐπὶ τῇ σῇ ἀγνωσίᾳ καὶ συστελεῖς τὸ φρόνημα καὶ σεαυτὸν ἐπιγνοὺς συνήσεις πολλὰ καὶ μεγάλα καὶ θαυμαστὰ πράγματα· ἐπεὶ τὸ νομίζειν εἰδέναι οὐκ ἐᾷ προκόπτειν εἰς τὸ εἰδέναι.
3.82 (πβ') Οὗτος ἀκριβῶς θέλει σωθῆναι, ὁ τοῖς ἰατρικοῖς φαρμάκοις μὴ ἀνθιστάμενος· αὗται δέ εἰσιν ὀδύναι καὶ λύπαι διὰ ποικίλων ἐπιφορῶν ἐπαγόμεναι. Ὁ δὲ ἀνθιστάμενος οὐκ οἶδε τί ἐνταῦθα πραγματεύεται οὐδὲ τί ἐντεῦθεν ὀνησόμενος ἀπελεύσεται.
3.83 (πγ') Κενοδοξία καὶ φιλαργυρία ἀλλήλων εἰσὶ γεννετικά· οἱ μὲν γὰρ κενοδοξοῦντες πλουτοῦσιν, οἱ δὲ πλουτοῦντες κενοδοξοῦσιν, ἀλλ᾽ ὡς κοσμικοί· ἐπεὶ ὁ μοναχὸς ἀκτήμων ὢν μᾶλλον κενοδοξεῖ· ἀργύριον δὲ ἔχων κρύπτει αὐτό, αἰσχυνόμενος ὡς ἀνοίκειον πρᾶγμα τοῦ σχήματος ἔχων.
3.84 (πδ') Τῆς τοῦ μοναχοῦ κενοδοξίας ἴδιον, τὸ ἐπ᾽ ἀρετῇ κενοδοξεῖν καὶ τοῖς ταύτῃ ἀκολουθοῦσι· τῆς δὲ ὑπερηφανίας αὐτοῦ ἴδιον, τὸ ἐπὶ κατορθώμασιν ἐπαίρεσθαι καὶ ἐξουθενεῖν τοὺς ἄλλους καὶ τὸ ἑαυτῷ ταῦτα καὶ μὴ τῷ Θεῷ ἐπιγράφειν. Οἷον τὰ τῶν κοσμικῶν κατορθώματα πλοῦτός ἐστι καὶ δόξα καὶ δυναστεία καὶ τρυφὴ καὶ εὐσαρκία καὶ εὐτεκνία καὶ τὰ τούτων ἀκόλουθα· εἰς ἅπερ ἐλθὼν ὁ μοναχὸς ἀπόλλυται. Τὰ δὲ τοῦ μοναχοῦ κατορθώματα, ἀκτημοσύνη, ἀδοξία, ἀδυναμία, ἐγκράτεια, κακοπάθεια καὶ τὰ τούτων ἀκόλουθα· εἰς ἅπερ ἐλθὼν ὁ φιλόκοσμος παρὰ πρόθεσιν, πτῶμα ἡγεῖται μέγα καὶ κινδυνεύει πολλάκις καὶ ἀγχόνῃ χρήσασθαι· τινὲς δὲ καὶ ἐχρήσαντο.
3.86 (πστ') Τὰ βρώματα διὰ δύο αἰτίας ἐκτίσθη· τροφῆς ἕνεκα καὶ θεραπείας. Οἱ οὖν πάρεξ τούτων μεταλαμβάνοντες, ὡς παραχρώμενοι τοῖς εἰς χρῆσιν παρὰ Θεοῦ δοθεῖσιν, ὡς τρυφηταὶ κατακρίνονται· καὶ ἐπὶ πάντων δὲ τῶν πραγμάτων ἡ παράχρησίς ἐστιν ἡ ἁμαρτία.
3.87 (πζ') Ταπεινοφροσύνη ἐστὶ προσευχὴ συνεχὴς μετὰ δακρύων καὶ πόνων· αὕτη γὰρ τὸν Θεὸν ἀεὶ εἰς βοήθειαν ἐπικαλουμένη, εἰς τὴν ἰδίαν δύναμιν καὶ σοφίαν ἀφρόνως θαρρεῖν οὐκ ἐᾷ οὐδὲ ἄλλων κατεπαίρεσθαι, ἅτινά εἰσι χαλεπὰ νοσήματα τοῦ τῆς ὑπερηφανίας πάθους.
3.88 (πη') Ἄλλο ἐστὶ μάχεσθαι τῷ ψιλῷ λογισμῷ, ἵνα μὴ κινήσῃ τὸ πάθος· καὶ ἄλλο ἐστὶ τῷ ἐμπαθεῖ μάχεσθαι, ἵνα μὴ γένηται συγκατάθεσις. Οἱ ἀμφότεροι δὲ τρόποι οὐκ ἐῶσι χρονίσαι τοὺς λογισμούς.
14__304 3.89 (πθ') Ἡ λύπη τῇ μνησικακίᾳ συνέζευκται· ὅταν οὖν ὁ νοῦς τὸ πρόσωπον τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ μετὰ λύπης ἐνοπτρίζεται, δῆλον ὅτι μνησικακίαν ἔχει πρὸς αὐτόν. Ὁδοὶ δὲ μνησικάκων εἰς θάνατον, διότι πᾶς μνησίκακος, παράνομος.
