To Marcian, asking that the audacious acts committed by Dioscorus and Eutyches in Ephesus against Saint Flavian be investigated at an ecumenical council; and the emperor commanded all the bishops to be assembled. βʹ. ιζʹ. ιʹ. γʹ. ιδʹ. εʹ. γʹ. In this year, the holy fourth council took place in Chalcedon in the month of October, in the 5th indiction, one year and two months after the proclamation of Marcian; and when all the bishops had assembled in the martyrium of Saint Euphemia, along with the senate, and the proceedings against Eutyches in the first indiction and the innovations made by Dioscorus in Ephesus had been examined, Dioscorus, being accused concerning these things, took refuge in ignorance of the deeds, and being unable to escape the refutation in the proceedings, was at a loss, 106 and the truth was laid bare. Then, having no defense, he was put to shame. Those who had sat with him in the robber council testified against him about the violence and coercion which they had endured from him, and asking for pardon from the council, they were received; of whom one was also Juvenal, the bishop of Jerusalem. And Dioscorus, being at a loss and having no defense, no longer dared to appear before the council. Then the council, with emperor Marcian also present along with the senate, pronounced against Dioscorus and Eutyches, and deposed them. And the emperor exiled Dioscorus to Gangra, and praising the council said: "I confess greatest thanks to the God of us all, that with discord having been eliminated, we have all come together into one and the same confession." And having graciously received the 630 holy fathers, he dismissed each to his own see in peace. And Proterius was ordained bishop of Alexandria in place of Dioscorus. Year of the world 5945. Year of the divine incarnation 445. Marcian, emperor of the Romans, for 6 years. 3rd year. Peroz, king of the Persians, for 24 years. 1st year. Leo, bishop of Rome, for 21 years. 11th year. Anatolius, bishop of Constantinople, for 9 years. 4th year. Juvenal, bishop of Jerusalem, for 38 years. 15th year. Proterius, bishop of Alexandria, for 6 years. 1st year. Maximus, bishop of Antioch, for 4 years. 4th year. In this year, the blessed and pious Pulcheria fell asleep in the Lord, having accomplished many good deeds and having left all her possessions to the poor; which Marcian, though they were very many, eagerly distributed. And she also built many houses of prayer and poor-houses and hostels and guest-cemeteries, among which was also the church of the holy martyr Lawrence. And with Dioscorus having been exiled and Proterius appointed, the sympathizers of Dioscorus and Eutyches made a very great sedition, threatening to obstruct also the grain-shipment. But Marcian, having learned of this, commanded the grain of 107 Egypt to be brought down the Nile not to Alexandria, but to Pelusium, and thus to be sailed to the capital city. Therefore the Alexandrians, suffering from famine, asked Proterius to entreat the emperor on their behalf, and so they ceased from their disorder. In this year the Bath of Diocletian was built in Alexandria; and Attila burned the city of Aquileia. In the same year, a certain monk Theodosius, a ruinous man, having gone down swiftly to Jerusalem after the council in Chalcedon and having learned that the Augusta Eudocia was attached to Dioscorus who had been deposed by the council, began to cry out against the council as having perverted the orthodox faith, and he carries away the Augusta and the monks, and using his own bloodthirsty ways in a barbaric manner, he seizes the archepiscopal throne, and having the Augusta's men as his ministers, he ordains bishops in city after city, while the bishops were still at the council. And Severian, the bishop of Scythopolis, who did not submit to his evil doctrine, he led out of the city and slaughtered, and he raised up a persecution against those not in communion with him, and he tortured many, and confiscated the property of others, and gave over the houses of still others to fire, so that the city was thought to be under
