glorifying. Amen. The passage of the Israelites in the desert after the Exodus 5.13 Therefore, when the Israelites had crossed over to the other side, to the place called Phoinikon, they began to walk through the desert of Shur, God spreading out a cloud for them by day as a covering from the heat of the sun and guiding them in it, and by night appearing in a pillar of fire and guiding them through the entire desert, as it is written: "He spread a cloud for a covering to them, and fire to give them light in the night." It is possible, then, to represent this also in this way. 5.14 Then, traveling again from Marah, they came to Elim, which we now call Raitho, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees; the springs are preserved even to this day, but the palm trees have become much more numerous. Up to this point, they had the sea on their right and the desert on their left; but from here, they walk up to the mountain, leaving the sea behind them and walking forward into the desert. And when they were between Elim and Mount Sinai, the manna came down upon them there; there also they first kept the Sabbath according to the commandments that God had given to Moses unwritten in Marah. It is possible, then, to represent these things also in this way. 5.15 Having arrived here at Elim from Marah and again traveling between Elim and Mount Sinai into the desert, into which there also quail came down upon them in the evening and the manna in the morning; there again they first began to keep the Sabbath, the manna being preserved from the sixth day and the Sabbath, while on any other day it could not remain, but stank and disappeared; and for this reason they were taught to keep the Sabbath; for some wished to gather on the Sabbath also and did not find any, as it is written. 5.16 Then again they encamped at Rephidim, which is now called Pharan. And being thirsty, Moses goes by the command of God with the elders—and the rod in his hand—to Mount Horeb, that is, in Sinai, being near Pharan, about six miles away. And when he struck the rock there, abundant waters flowed out and the people drank, just as David also cries out in the Psalms: "He clave the rock in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of a great depth," and again: "He clave the rock, and the waters gushed out; they ran in the dry places like a river," and again: "And he brought forth water out of the rock, and brought down waters like rivers." 5.17 But the apostle Paul says: "For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ," so as to say: Just as abundant water following from the rock gave them drink plentifully, so Christ provides life-giving streams for us through the mysteries, of which the rock was a type. 5.18 And there again, having fought against Amalek, they defeated them; there again Jethro meets his son-in-law Moses with his two children and his wife; for Moses had sent away his wife and children when he saw the vision of the angel in the desert and was weakened; where also Zipporah circumcised their other son who was uncircumcised. It is possible, then, to represent these things also in this way. 5.19 And in the third month they came to Mount Sinai, and having spoken in various ways to Moses in a pillar of cloud, after these things God shows the people that fearful vision, so that the people were terrified and exceedingly afraid, the mountain burning and the smoke ascending as from a furnace; and there was darkness and gloom and a tempest and the sounds of trumpets blaring. And there, leading up the great Moses and hiding him in the cloud without food for forty days, he then shows him through visions how he began to make the world; and he extended the creation over six days and on the seventh he rested. And thus he gives the law in writing; so the representation of the aforementioned things is thus. The people of the Israelites going from Rephidim to Mount Sinai Moses receiving the law from God 1. Moses within the cloud remaining without food for forty days and forty nights. 2. The people of the Israelites marveling
