Do you not know this from of old, 4b since man was placed upon the earth? “For has anything new happened,” he says, “since the world came to be? And nothing strange happens, no innovation nor change.” 20,5a For the joy of the impious is a sudden fall, 5b and the gladness of the lawless is destruction. But if their joy is a sudden fall and their gladness is destruction, where shall we place their destruction, tell me, where their pain and despondency? 20,6a If his gifts, he says, ascend to heaven, 6b and his sacrifice touches the clouds, 20,7a when he seems to be already established, 7b then he will utterly perish, 7c and those who saw him will say: Where is he? Then showing that the blow is from above, he says: 20,8a For like a dream that has flown away he shall not be found, 8b and he has fled like a vision of the night. 20,9a For an eye has caught a glimpse of him and will do so no more; 9b and his place will no longer take note of him. 20,10a Let the lesser destroy133 his sons, 10b and may their hands feel pains. Which David also said: I passed by, and behold, he was not, and I sought him, and his place was not found. That is: their destruction comes suddenly, so that you might not think the misfortune is according to a natural sequence, but according to some divine and extraordinary power. And do not speak to me only of lawlessness, but even if they should offer sacrifices, it is of no avail. Let the lesser destroy their sons, he says. And from this it is clear that the plague is sent from God, because the worse prevail over the greater and the outcasts overcome those who have strength. 20,11a His bones, he says, were filled with his youth 11b and it will lie down with him in the dust. 20,12a Wickedness was sweet in his mouth, 12b he will hide it under his tongue. 20,13a He will not spare it and will not forsake it 13b and will hold it fast in the midst of his throat. 20,14a And he will not be able to help himself. 14b The gall of asps is in his belly, and pain, 20,15a Wealth unjustly gathered will be vomited out of his belly. “Even if he has it so,” he says, “in safety as if in a belly, he will quickly cast it out with pain.” For this is what it is: it will be vomited out. This happens to the rich. Then “he curses,” he says, “from the boasting of wealth.” 20,15b But from his house, he says, an angel of death will drag him out. 20,16a And he will suck the poison of dragons, 16b and the tongue of a viper may kill him. 20,17a May he not see the milking of the herds 17b nor the streams of honey and butter. 20,18a For 134 empty and vain things he has labored. And may he have wealth, from which he will not taste, 18b like something harsh, unchewed, unable to be swallowed. 20,19a For he has crushed the houses of many helpless people, 19b and has seized their dwelling, and did not establish it. 20,20a Therefore he will have no salvation in his possessions 20,21b nor will his good things flourish. 20,20b In his desire he will not be saved, 20,21a there is no remnant for his foods. 20,22a When he seems to be already full, he will be afflicted, 22b and every necessity will come upon him 20,23a and will fill his belly. 23b May He send upon him the fury of wrath, 23c and may He rain pains upon him; 20,24a and he will not be saved from a hand of iron, 24b and a bronze bow may wound him 20,25a and an arrow may pass through his body. 25b And may stars not walk in his dwellings; 25c upon him are terrors, 20,26a and may all darkness await him. 26b And an unquenchable fire will devour him, 26c and a newcomer may harm his house. 20,27a May heaven reveal his sins, 27b and may the earth rise up against him. 20,28a Destruction will drag his house to its end 28b and a day of wrath may come upon him. These things also allude to this man. 20,29a This is the portion, he says, of an impious man from the Lord 29b and the possession of his belongings from the overseer. See how both parties arrive at different conclusions, and this one and that one say the same things, that the impious will perish.

21,1 BUT JOB ANSWERED AND SAID: 21,2a hear my words, 2b so that this might not be to me a consolation from you. That is: “so that you may learn that I gain no benefit from you.”

21,1 ΥΠΟΛΑΒΩΝ ∆Ε ΙΩΒ ΛΕΓΕΙ· 21,2a ἀκούσατέ μου τῶν λόγων, 2b ἵνα μὴ εἴη

μοι αὕτη παρ' ὑμῶν παράκλησις. τουτέστιν· «ἵνα μάθητε, ὅτι οὐδὲν καρποῦμαι παρ'
