Εἰ γὰρ ἐν οἰκίᾳ μεγάλῃ, ὅπου ἐστὶ χρυσώματα καὶ ἀργυρώματα καὶ ἐσθὴς διάφορος, χρυσός τε καὶ ἄργυρος, νεανίσκοι καὶ νεάνιδες διατρίβοντες ἄγχουσι τὸν ἑαυτῶν νοῦν (εἰ καὶ ἡ φύσις διὰ τὴν σύνοικον ἁμαρτίαν πάντων ἐπιθυμεῖ) καὶ διὰ τὸν ἀνθρώπινον φόβον τῶν δεσπότων ἐπέχουσι τὰς ὁρμὰς τῶν ἐπιθυμιῶν, πόσῳ μᾶλλον ὅπου ἐστὶ φόβος θεοῦ, ἀντιμάχεσθαι καὶ ἀντιπράττειν ὀφείλει τῇ συνούσῃ κακίᾳ· τὰ γὰρ δυνατά σοι προσέταξεν ὁ θεός. ἡ μὲν οὖν τῶν ἀλόγων ζῴων φύσις δετή ἐστιν. οἷον ἡ τοῦ ὄφεως φύσις πικρά ἐστι καὶ ἰοβόλος, ὅλοι οὖν οἱ ὄφεις τοιοῦτοί εἰσιν. ὁ λύκος ἁρπάζειν εἴωθεν, ὅλοι οἱ λύκοι τῆς αὐτῆς εἰσι φύσεως. τὸ ἀρνίον ἀφελὲς ὂν ἁρπάζεται, ὅλα τὰ ἀρνία τῆς αὐτῆς εἰσι φύσεως. ἡ περιστερὰ ἄδολός ἐστι καὶ ἀκέραιος, ὅλαι αἱ περιστεραὶ τῆς αὐτῆς εἰσι φύσεως. ὁ δὲ ἄνθρωπος οὐχ οὕτως ἐστίν. εἷς ἐστιν ὡς λύκος ἁρπάζων καὶ εἷς ἐστιν ὡς ἀρνίον ἁρπαζόμενος· ἐκ τοῦ αὐτοῦ γένους τῆς ἀνθρωπότητος ἀμφότερα γίγνεται. ἔστι τις μὴ ἀρκούμενος τῇ ἰδίᾳ γυναικί, ἀλλὰ καὶ πορνεύων· καὶ ἔστιν ἄλλος, ὅτι οὐκ ἐᾷ οὐδὲ ἐπιθυμίαν ἀνελθεῖν ἐπὶ τὴν καρδίαν αὐτοῦ. ἔστι τις διαρπάζων τὰ τοῦ πλησίον· καὶ ἔστιν ἄλλος διὰ θεοσέβειαν καὶ τὰ ἴδια διαδιδούς. ὁρᾷς πῶς τρεπτή ἐστιν αὕτη ἡ φύσις. ἔστιν ἐπὶ τὸ κακὸν ῥέπουσα καὶ ἔστιν ἐπὶ τὸ καλὸν αὖθις· καὶ δι' ἀμφοτέρων ἐπιτηδείως ἔχει νεῦσαι πρὸς ἃς βούλεται πράξεις. δεκτικὴ οὖν ἐστιν ἡ φύσις τοῦ καλοῦ τε καὶ τοῦ κακοῦ, ἤτοι θείας χάριτος ἤτοι ἐναντίας δυνάμεως, ἀλλ' οὐκ ἀναγκαστική. Ἐπειδὴ τὸ πρὶν αὐτὸς ὁ Ἀδὰμ ἐν καθαρότητι ὢν ἐβασίλευε τῶν λογισμῶν αὐτοῦ· ἀφ' οὗ δὲ παρέβη τὴν ἐντολήν, ὄρη δυσβάστακτα ἐπίκειται τῷ νῷ αὐτοῦ, καὶ οἱ τῆς κακίας λογισμοὶ παραμιγέντες ὅλοι ὡς ἴδιοι αὐτοῦ ἐγένοντο καὶ οὐδὲ εἷς αὐτοῦ ἴδιός ἐστιν, ἐπειδὴ
