at the fearful sight of the mountain burning and smoking. 3. Moses receiving the law from God. 4. Here the great Moses was deemed worthy after the forty days, in another six days, to see through visions how in six days God made the heaven and the earth and all things in them; in the order of each single day God encouraged him also to write these things, his face also having been glorified by God. The text 5.20 So when he had come down from the mountain, he is commanded by God to make the tabernacle, which was a type of the things he had seen on the mountain, I mean a copy of the whole world; "For see," he says, "that you make all things according to the pattern shown to you on the mountain." But the blessed apostle Paul, in the Epistle to the Hebrews, said that the first tabernacle was a type of this world; for he says: "For the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary. For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the Sanctuary." Having called it "worldly," as if a type of this world, he added: "Wherein was the candlestick," so as to say the luminaries, "and the table," that is, the earth, "and the shewbread," so as to say its annual fruits, "which," he says, "is called the Sanctuary," so as to indicate the first tabernacle. 5.21 Then also concerning the second he says: "We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; a minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man," and again: "But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us," and again: "For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us," calling heaven the "true" tabernacle, and the things constructed through Moses "figures"; whence he calls the things of Moses "made with hands," but the true things "not made with hands." 5.22 Having been commanded, therefore, to make it, he makes it, as the pattern of the tabernacle and the pattern of all its vessels were shown to him, both the ark of the testimony and the mercy-seat above it and the two Cherubim stretching out their wings and overshadowing the mercy-seat from above, likewise also the veil and the table and the lampstand and the curtains of the tabernacle, so as to say the first coverings, and the hair skins of goats' wool, so as to say spun, again these also second coverings of the tabernacle, likewise also the third ones of reddened and sky-blue skins, which they called hides, all varied, wonderful. And the description of the tabernacle is thus. 1. The back parts of the tabernacle: six pillars of one and a half cubits make nine cubits, and two pillars at the corners of half a cubit make for the eight pillars ten cubits; this is the width of the tabernacle. 2. Having a drawn veil called a curtain. 3. Bars passing through the rings. 4. A middle bar passing through the boards. 5. Bars passing through the rings. 5.23 The twenty pillars are twenty standing boards, the width of each board being one and a half cubits; the twenty pillars make thirty cubits; this is the length of the tabernacle. Their bases were double, surrounding the board on the inside and the outside; and the bases were of silver. But the capitals were single, and of gold, likewise also the rings and the boards and the bars and the corner-pieces. And the corner-pieces are two pieces of wood overlaid with gold and nailed to each board, turning and meeting one another, so that they might bind all the boards together. These corner-pieces and the bars, passing through the rings, that is the clasps, bound the whole tabernacle securely. But the fifth, the middle bar, was not passed through the rings, but through the middle of the boards
