this scripture in your ears». 3.1.2 And indeed, beginning from this point with his own teaching, he preached the good news to the poor, placing first among his beatitudes, «blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven». But also to those troubled by wicked spirits, and who had long been held by demons in the manner of captives, he proclaimed release, calling all to freedom and a loosing of the bonds of wickedness through the words he spoke: «Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest». 3.1.3 And he gave sight to the blind, granting vision to those whose bodily eyes were ruined, and providing the light of true piety to be seen by those whose minds had long been dim concerning the truth. Thus, the prophecy that has been cited shows that Christ would first be the author and originator of the evangelical work, and after him, the same prophet who spoke declares that his disciples would be ministers of the same undertaking: «how beautiful are the feet of those who preach good news» or «of those who preach peace». 3.1.4 Here, he said with extreme precision that the feet of those who preach the good news of Christ would be beautiful. For how would they not be beautiful, who in a short and brief time would run through the entire inhabited world and fill every place with the pious teaching about the savior of the world? And that they did not use human words to persuade their listeners, but that it was the power of God working with them in the evangelical proclamation, another prophet again proclaims: «The Lord will give a word to those who preach the good news with great power». 3.1.5 And again Isaiah: «Go up on a high mountain, you who bring good news to Zion; lift up your voice with strength, you who bring good news to Jerusalem. Lift it up, do not be afraid; say to the cities of Judah, 'Behold our God!' Behold, the Lord comes with might, and his arm with dominion. Behold, his reward is with him, and his work is before him. Like a shepherd he will tend his flock, and in his arm he will gather the lambs and will comfort those that are with young». 3.1.6 What meaning these things have, we shall know as we proceed on the path according to the evangelical teaching. Nevertheless, the gospel has been revealed, and the name of the gospel has been attested through the prophetic voices, and you have clear and evident proofs, from whom the gospel will begin, that it is from Christ himself, and through whom it will be preached, that it is through his apostles, and also with what power it will prevail, that it is not human; which indeed was also established through the saying, «the Lord will give a word to those who preach the good news with great power». 3.1.7 What then remains after this, but to take up a few out of the many things prophesied from the beginning among the Hebrews concerning Christ, so that you may know what sort of person the gospel proclaimed he would be in the latter times, and at the same time the wonder of the prophets' foreknowledge of the future, and the results of the predictions, how they are established as fulfilled in our savior and lord Jesus, the Christ of God? 3.2.1 Moses, first of the prophets, proclaims that another prophet like himself will be raised up. For since the law according to him pertained only to the nation of the Jews, and to them in the land of Judea or around it, but not also to one living in the farthest foreign land... has been brought together by us in what was previously worked out, it was necessary, of course, for the one who is God not only of the Jews but also of the nations to provide for life the things advantageous for all nations toward the knowledge and piety of him, he fittingly declares through an oracle that he will raise up from the nation of the Jews another prophet in no way inferior to his own economy, God himself having spoken of this one in this manner: 3.2.2 «I will raise up for them a prophet from among their brothers, just like you, and I will put my word in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. And the man who
