of the body, let the torments of the devil come upon me, only that I may attain to Jesus Christ.” 3.36.10 And these things he formulated from the aforesaid city for the churches enumerated; and when he was already beyond Smyrna, from Troas he again communicated by writing with those in Philadelphia and with the church of the Smyrnaeans, and privately with its leader Polycarp; whom, knowing him well to be an apostolic man, he commends to him the flock in Antioch, as a genuine and good shepherd, deeming him worthy to have care for it with dili3.36.11gence. And the same man, writing to the Smyrnaeans, has used sayings I know not from where, relating certain things about Christ as follows: “But I know him to be in the flesh even after the resurrection, and I believe that he is. And when he came to those with Peter, he said to them: Take, handle me and see that I am not a bodiless demon. And immediately they touched him and believed.” 3.36.12 Irenaeus also knows of his martyrdom, and of his epistles 3.36.12 he makes mention, speaking thus: “As one of our own said, when condemned to the beasts for his testimony toward God, ‘I am the wheat of God, and I am ground by the teeth of beasts, that I may be found pure bread.’” 3.36.13 And Polycarp also mentions these very things in his extant epistle to the Philippians, saying in these words: “I exhort you all, therefore, to be obedient and to practice all patience, which you saw with your own eyes not only in the blessed Ignatius and Rufus and Zosimus, but also in others from among you and in Paul himself and the other apostles, being persuaded that all these did not run in vain, but in faith and righteousness, and that they are in their due place with the Lord, with whom they also suffered. For they did not love this present age, but him who died for us and was raised by God for our sake.” And he adds in what follows: 3.36.14 “You wrote to me, both you and Ignatius, that if anyone goes to Syria, he should also carry the letters from you; which I will do, if I get a suitable opportunity, either I myself or he whom I send as an ambassador 3.36.15 also on your behalf. The epistles of Ignatius which were sent to us by him, and as many others as we had with us, we have sent to you, as you instructed; which are subjoined to this epistle; from them you will be able to be greatly benefited. For they contain faith and patience and all the edification which pertains to our Lord.” And such are the things concerning Ignatius; and Heros succeeded him in the episcopate of Antioch. 3.37.1 Among those who shone at this time was also Quadratus, who is said to have been distinguished for the gift of prophecy along with the daughters of Philip; and many others besides these were known at this time, holding the first rank of the apostolic succession; who also, being such godly disciples of great men, built upon the foundations of the churches that had been laid beforehand by the apostles in every place, increasing the preaching still more and sowing the saving seeds of the kingdom of heaven throughout 3.37.2 all the world in its breadth. For indeed very many of the disciples of that time, their souls struck by the divine word with a more ardent love of wisdom, first fulfilled the Savior’s exhortation, distributing their substance to the needy, then, setting out on journeys, they performed the work of evangelists, being ambitious to preach the word of faith to those who had not yet heard it at all, and to hand down the scripture of the divine Gospels 3.37.3. And these, having only laid the foundations of the faith in certain foreign places, and appointing others as shepherds and entrusting to these very ones the cultivation of those newly brought in, would themselves go on again to other regions and nations with the grace and cooperation of God, since even then many wonderful powers of the divine Spirit were working through them, so that at the first hearing, whole crowds of people at once eagerly... to the creator of all things
