would choose to be slaughtered for the sake of his beloved, although expecting nothing from her after death. So indeed must we also, not with the expectation of a kingdom, nor with the hope of any other of the good things to come, but for the sake of God himself suffer all things. But so many are still so listless and sluggish, that not even with a reward do they long for virtue. And God, though promising a kingdom, is not heard; but the devil, causing Gehenna, is loved. What is more grievous than this madness? And why do I say Gehenna? Even before Gehenna, by bringing on pain here, and shame, and ridicule and countless torments, he has many who run to him. Consider then the adulterer, how he lives more miserably than all, even before Gehenna suspecting everything, and trembling at shadows, and looking at no one with free eyes, but fearing everyone, those who know, those who do not know, seeing sharpened swords, impending deaths, executioners, courts of law. What of this sort does chastity have, even if it has countless labors? Is not the chaste man always in delight, while the adulterer is always in pain and in darkness? So also is it possible to see in other cases, of those overcome by anger, and of those who control anger; of those who seize, and of those who give their own things for God's sake, or rather to say, who give them up. For the one sort are seated in a harbor; while the others, having been carried out into the strait of present evils, wander about each day. But apart from these things, when he who lives with greed and licentiousness has advancing age that is not sufficient for his enjoyment, 55.106 and the impending fear of death, consider what terrible things he suffers. But not so he who is in virtue; but then he rather rejoices and is glad, when he comes to old age, his enjoyment not withering away, but rather flourishing. For adulterers, therefore, and the licentious, and the greedy, and gluttons, old age is a falling away from their enjoyment; but for those pursuing virtue then an increase of enjoyment occurs. So that even before Gehenna, and before the woes from here, this also is sufficient to shake the mind. Considering these things, therefore, let us flee vice, let us choose virtue, let us love God, not for his things, but for himself. Thus in the present life we will also travel the road of virtue, which is narrow in its nature, but becomes wide by the will of those who travel it; may it be granted to all of us to reach its end, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
ON THE 8TH PSALM.
To the end, for the winepresses. Another, A song of victory for the winepresses. Another, To the giver of victory, for the Gittith. But the Hebrew, Lamnasseh, al hagethith. O Lord, our Lord, how wonderful is your name in all the earth! Another,
How great is your name! 1. In the psalm before this one he said: I will give thanks to the Lord according to his righteousness, and I will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High; here he fulfills the promise, offering up a hymn to him. And in that one, the things said are as from one person; for, "O Lord my God," he says, "in you I have hoped, save me." But here, as from many. For, "O Lord," he says, "our Lord, how wonderful is your name." But keep silence, and listen with exactness. For if in a theater when satanic choirs are singing, there is much silence, so as to receive those destructive songs; and this while the choir is from
