For she can die a thousand times, if she is willing; at least many women have also been martyred; she can practice self-control, and more so than men, since not so great a flame troubles her, and show forth propriety and dignity, and holiness, Without which no one will see the Lord, and contempt for money, if they wish, and simply all other things. Make haste, he says, to come before winter. How he urges him on! and nowhere does he mention the painful thing; he does not say, before I die, so as not to cause grief, but, To come before winter, so that you may not be detained. Eubulus, he says, greets you, and Pudens, and Linus, and Claudia, and all the brethren. He does not mention them by name. Do you see that those were more zealous? The Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Nothing is better than this prayer. Do not grieve, he says, that I am departing; the Lord is with you. And he did not say, With you, but, With your spirit. The help is twofold: of the grace of the Spirit and of God helping it. And otherwise it is not possible for God to be with us, without the spiritual grace being present; for if we were abandoned, how will he be with us? Grace be with 62.660 us. Amen. And finally he prays for himself; that is, so as to be always well-pleasing to him, so as to have grace with the gift; for with this being present, nothing will be grievous. For just as one who sees the king, and has favor with him, perceives nothing grievous; so even if we are forsaken by friends, even if we fall into some terrible thing, we will have no perception of it, with that grace being present and walling us in. 4. How then is it possible to draw grace to oneself? By doing the things dear to God, and obeying him in all things. Or in great houses, do we not see those servants having favor who do not care for their own things, but for their masters' with all their soul and eagerness, who arrange everything well not only through a master's compulsion, but also through eagerness and affection? When they are always in their masters' eyes, when they are occupied with the house, when they transact no private business, nor care for their own affairs, but rather hold the master's things as their own? For he who has made his own things his master's has not made his own things his master's, but his master's his own; he gives orders in his master's things just as he does, he has power just as he has. And many of the servants fear him more, and whatever this one says, the master says also; all the enemies are then in fear. If then he who in worldly things has despised his own, and chosen his master's, has not despised his own, but rather has obtained greater things; how much more in spiritual things. Despise your own things, and you have received the things of God; He Himself wishes this. Despise the earth, and seize the kingdom of heaven; live there, not here; from there be formidable, not here. If from there you are formidable, you will be formidable not only to men, but also to demons and to the devil himself; but if from the money here, you will be easily despised by them, and often by men also; however rich you may become, you will be rich in servile things; but if you look down on these, you will be glorious in the royal house. Such were the apostles, who despised the servile house, and the money here. And see how they gave orders concerning the master's things. Let so-and-so, he says, be freed from sickness, another from demons, and bind that one, and loose this one. This was done on earth, but it was accomplished as in heaven. For whatever you bind, he says, on earth, will have been bound in heaven. And He gave them greater authority than His own. And that I have not lied, hear Him saying: He who believes in Me will do greater things than I do. Why so? Because in this way also the honor passes to the Master. Since

πνευματικοῖς. ∆ύναται γὰρ μυριάκις ἀποθανεῖν, εἴ γε βούλοιτο· πολλαὶ γοῦν καὶ ἐμαρτύρησαν· δύναται σωφροσύνην ἀσκῆσαι, καὶ μᾶλλον τῶν ἀνδρῶν, ἅτε οὐ τοσαύτης ἐνοχλούσης αὐτῇ φλογὸς, καὶ κοσμιότητα καὶ σεμνότητα ἐπιδείξασθαι, καὶ ἁγιασμὸν, Οὗ χωρὶς οὐδεὶς ὄψεται τὸν Κύριον, καὶ χρημάτων ὑπεροψίαν, εἴ γε θέλοιεν, καὶ πάντα ἁπλῶς τὰ ἄλλα. Πολλοὶ δὲ τῶν οἰκετῶν μᾶλλον αὐτὸν δεδοίκασι, καὶ ὅπερ ἂν εἴπῃ οὗτος, τοῦτο κἀκεῖνος· πάντες οἱ ἐχθροὶ λοιπὸν ἐν φόβῳ. Εἰ δὲ ὁ ἐν τοῖς βιωτικοῖς τῶν αὑτοῦ καταφρονήσας, καὶ τὰ τοῦ δεσπότου ἑλόμενος, οὐχὶ κατεφρόνησε τῶν αὑτοῦ, ἀλλὰ μᾶλλον μειζόνων ἐπέτυχε· πολλῷ μᾶλλον ἐν τοῖς πνευματικοῖς. Καταφρόνησον τῶν σῶν, καὶ ἔλαβες τὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ· βούλεται αὐτὸς τοῦτο. Καταφρόνησον τῆς γῆς, καὶ ἅρπασον τὴν βασιλείαν τῶν οὐρανῶν· ἐκεῖ δίαγε, μὴ ἐνταῦθα· ἐκεῖθεν ἔσο φοβερὸς, μὴ ἐνταῦθα. Ἐκεῖθεν ἂν ᾖς φοβερὸς, οὐχὶ ἀνθρώποις μόνον, ἀλλὰ καὶ δαίμοσι καὶ αὐτῷ τῷ διαβόλῳ ἔσῃ φοβερός· ἂν δὲ ἀπὸ τῶν χρημάτων τῶν ἐνταῦθα, ἐκείνοις εὐκαταφρόνητος ἔσῃ, πολλάκις δὲ καὶ ἀνθρώποις· ὅσα ἂν πλουτήσῃς, ἐν τοῖς δουλικοῖς πλουτήσεις· ἂν δὲ τούτων ὑπερίδῃς, ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ τῷ βασιλικῷ λαμπρὸς ἔσῃ. Τοιοῦτοι ἦσαν οἱ ἀπόστολοι, καταφρονήσαντες τῆς δουλικῆς οἰκίας, καὶ τῶν ἐνταῦθα χρημάτων. Καὶ ὅρα πῶς τοῖς δεσποτικοῖς ἐπέταττον. Ὁ δεῖνα, φησὶν, ἀπηλλάχθω νόσου, ἕτερος δαιμόνων, καὶ δῆσον ἐκεῖνον, καὶ λῦσον τοῦτον. Ἐπὶ γῆς τοῦτο ἐγίνετο, ἀλλ' ὡς ἐν οὐρανοῖς ἐτελεῖτο. Ὅσα γὰρ ἂν δήσητε, φησὶν, ἐπὶ γῆς, ἔσται δεδεμένα ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ. Καὶ μείζονα αὐτοῖς ἔδωκεν αὐτοῦ ἐξουσίαν. Καὶ ὅτι οὐκ ἐψευσάμην, ἄκουε αὐτοῦ λέγοντος· Ὁ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ, μείζονα ποιήσει ὧν ἐγὼ ποιῶ. Τί δήποτε; Ὅτι καὶ οὕτως εἰς τὸν ∆εσπότην ἡ τιμὴ διαβαίνει. Ἐπεὶ
