Continuation of Vol. II, p. 152
15. THEOD. What then? Ought we not to speak of one energy in Christ at all? MAX. According
to the Holy Scripture and the Holy Fathers we have not received to say any such thing; but just as we were permitted to believe and confess the two natures of Christ out of which He is, so too we were permitted to believe and confess His natural wills and energies, as is proper to Him, who is at once by nature God and man in the same person. THEOD. Truly, my lord, we too confess both the natures and the different energies, that is, divine and human; and His divinity as having a will, and His humanity as having a will; since His soul was not without a will. But we do not say two, so that we may not introduce Him as being in conflict with Himself. MAX. What then? By saying two wills, do you introduce them as conflicting on account of the number? THEOD. No. MAX. What then? Does the number, when spoken of natures, not divide; but when spoken of wills and energies, does it have the power of division? THEOD. Certainly the Fathers also, concerning wills and (153) energies, did not say it, fleeing from division, but 'one and another', and 'divine', and 'human', and 'double', and 'twofold'; and as they said, I say, and as they have spoken, I speak.
16. MAX. For the Lord's sake, if someone says to you: 'one and another', how many do you understand? Or, 'divine and human', how many do you understand? Or, 'double and twofold', how many do you understand? THEOD. I know how I understand it, but I do not say 'two'. Then Abba Maximus, turning to the officials, said: For the Lord's sake, if you hear 'one and one', or 'one and another'; or 'twice two', or 'twice five', what do you understand when you answer those who say them? And they said: Since you have adjured us, 'one and one' we understand as two; and 'one and another', we understand as two; and 'twice two' we understand as four. Likewise also 'twice five', we understand as ten. And as if ashamed by their response, Theodosius said: What has not been said by the Fathers, I do not say. And immediately Abba Maximus took the book of the acts of the holy apostolic council, and showed the Holy Fathers expressly speaking of the two wills and energies of our Savior and God Jesus Christ; which book of the acts Theodosius the consul took from him, and he himself also read all the citations from the Fathers. And then Theodosius the bishop, answering, said: God knows, if this council had not set forth the anathemas personally, I would have accepted it more than any man; but so that we do not waste time here, whatever the Fathers said, I say, and I will immediately put it in writing: two natures, and two wills, and two energies; and come in with us to receive communion, and let there be union.
17. MAX. My lord, I do not dare to accept a written agreement from you concerning such a matter, being but a simple monk; but if God has moved you to accept the sayings of the Holy Fathers, as the canon requires, send a written report about this to the one of Rome; that is, the emperor, and the patriarch, and the synod under him. For I will not receive communion, even if these things happen, while those who have been anathematized are mentioned in the holy anaphora. For I fear the condemnation of the anathema. THEOD. God knows, I do not condemn you for being afraid; nor does anyone else. But give us counsel, for the Lord's sake, if this can possibly be done. MAX. What counsel do I have to give you about this? Go, examine if anything

Ι Ε. ΘΕΟ∆.
