he became the provider; he himself freed Israel from the bondage of the Egyptians. He therefore, speaking also to Moses, said: "I am who I am." And the word is sufficient, not only to convict the transgression of the Jews, but also to expose heretical blasphemy. 33. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah after those days, says the Lord: Giving my laws upon their minds, and upon the breast of their hearts I will write them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. God has shown this to us through the events themselves. For leading the holy apostles up to the mountain, he did not give them tablets of stone, but inscribed the divine laws in their hearts, and offered the beatitudes to the workers of virtue. 34. And they shall no more teach every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest of them. The life to come will receive the fulfillment of these sayings. For in that life we no longer need teaching from one another, with things appearing clearly, and the passions having ceased, and bodies having become incorruptible, and souls having become unchangeable. But it is the custom of the divine Scripture to mix prophecies. For it joins the words about the recall to the words about the captivity; and the Lord in the holy Gospels likewise places the words about Jerusalem and the words about the consummation. "For I will be merciful to their iniquities, and their sins I will remember no more." The grace of the all-holy baptism bestows this; for after remission, it does not remember former sins. After this, having shown that he is the creator of the sun, and moon, and stars, and that he commanded the one to make the day, and the others to light the night, and that at his nod the sea is moved, and enjoys calm, he added: 36. If these laws cease from before my face, says the Lord, then the race of Israel shall also cease from being a nation before my face for all the days. To these things must be added what was said through the prophet Isaiah: "Though 81.669 the number of the sons of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved." Therefore both prophecies hold true. "For not all who are from Israel, are Israel, but those who have believed in God, and have received the saving proclamation." From whom and through whom the Church was established throughout the whole world. 37. Thus says the Lord: If the heaven be exalted to the heights, and if the earth be brought low to the ground beneath, then I will also reject the house of Israel, says the Lord. As it is impossible, he says, for the heaven to become higher, or the earth deeper; so it is impossible for Israel to be utterly cast off. 38. Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, and a city shall be built to the Lord, from Hananeel to the gate of the corner. The Syrian says thus: "From the tower of the corner of Hananeel." 39. And the measuring line shall go out yet further from it opposite them to the hill of Gareb, He speaks the names of places around the city. "And it shall be encompassed with choice stones;" that is, great and strong. 40. And all the valley of Phagarim, and toward Spodias. And all Asarimoth to the brook of Kidron, to the corner of the horse gate of the East, a holy place to the Lord. He calls Spodias the place where they threw the ashes of the sacrifices; and Phagarim the places of the sacrificed meats; and having spoken above of the circuit of the city, in these things he showed the precinct of the divine temple, "And it shall no more be plucked up, nor be pulled down to the age. He resolved the ambiguity of these words in the things before. "For at the end," he said, "I will speak upon nations and kingdoms to be built up and to be planted." And if that nation turns and does evil, I will not bring upon it the good things which I spoke.
