they repent unprofitably, they groan in vain. 10.5.2 But for those who were tormented by them, an unceasing memory succeeded, an ageless praise. For their stories and honors, which those of middle age receive from the elders, and which grandfather passes on to grandchild or father to child, make the praise for their service immortal; and life preserves these feasts in succession like some inviolable inheritance, or rather, a thing more precious than an inheritance. For the good things of an inheritance a robber has taken away, or an enemy has taken as spoil, or a change of circumstances has emptied, but the feast of holy men no one will cut out of the year, as long as there are years and time runs on and heaven has the sun and earth feeds its own animals and the sea its excellent creatures. 10.5.3 But to speak more truly, even when these elements have ceased, even if it seems not so to some, the glory of martyrs and of the just will not be extinguished nor will their deeds perish along with creation; but then they will flourish even more, when humanity has been reordered for the incorruptible life. 10.6.1 It is possible for the unbelievers and those who doubt concerning our future hope to receive firm pledges of our good expectation from the things that are done in this life. For behold, the whole circle of the inhabited world has been filled with the athletes of Christ and every place has the memory of the saints; and all seasons grant to those who celebrate them the stories of the combatants, which are better than the gifts and produce of the earth. So that if someone were a zealous friend of the martyrs, and made it his care to celebrate the passions of them all, he would not pass a single day of the year without a feast. For all days have an adornment better than the sun's cycle: the noble deeds of the brave. 10.6.2 For since he who is set against what is good vented his spite fiercely against the mystery of the Christians, and strove to sprinkle all with dust, burying them in his own thoughts and making them busy themselves in vain with pursuits of clay, God, having anointed a multitude of the best men with his commands and trained them for endurance and strength, set them against the shameless and scheming enemy of humanity. And these men fought a new and not the usual contest. For they did not conquer by striking or breaking, but they proved their valor by suffering and being slain. 10.7.1 And what victory of war, you will say, O hearer? And what renown is this: to be racked and scourged and, in addition, to end one's life by fire or sword or the misery of prisons? But learn that wars for piety are won in the opposite way to others. For the one sort has their valor in killing, but the others win the victory through suffering and falling. And the boldness of the just performs intercessions for the world; and the enemy unwittingly fell into the opposite of what he wanted. For as many as he slew for bearing witness, so many helpers of men he prepared. 10.7.2 And in every action he is found to suffer this; from where he thinks to hinder piety, from there he brings about the growth of piety. For the wise God turns the counsels of the foolish and senseless to the contrary. And we find this by following the events of every age: the exposure of Moses, the sale of Joseph. Right at the beginning he murdered the second man, Abel, in order to cut off the seed of the pious, and the opposite happened. For from that time murderers are hated fiercely, ever since Cain was cursed by God. The matter of Christ, that Satan worked upon the Jews, so that they might crucify him. 10.7.3 The very same thing he also suffered in the case of the martyrs, whom many despise, making their dignity worthless through their own folly. Is he not a man? Was not his body consumed? Is not their memory in a few remains, and these buried in the earth? The Greeks and Eunomians especially say these things; let us speak to both. 10.8.1 We do not worship martyrs, but we honor them as genuine worshipers of God; we do not venerate men, but we admire

Τὰ γὰρ διηγήματα καὶ τὰς τιμὰς οἱ μεθηλικέστεροι παρὰ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων ὑποδεχόμενοι καὶ πάππος ἐκγόνῳ ἢ πατὴρ παιδὶ παρα διδόντες τὴν εἰς αὐτοὺς θεραπείαν ἀθάνατον ποιοῦσι τὸν ἔπαινον· καὶ ὥσπερ τινὰ κληρονομίαν ἄσυλον τὰς ἑορτὰς ταύτας ἐν διαδοχαῖς σώζει ὁ βίος, ἢ μᾶλλον καὶ κληρονομίας τιμιώτερον χρῆμα. Κληρονομίας μὲν γὰρ τὰ καλὰ ἢ λῃστὴς ἀφείλετο ἢ πολέμιος λάφυρον ἔλαβεν ἢ περίστασις πραγμάτων ἐκένωσεν, ἁγίων δὲ ἀνδρῶν ἑορτὴν οὐδεὶς ἐκκόψει ἐνιαυτοῦ, μέχρις ἂν ὦσιν ἐνιαυτοὶ καὶ χρόνος τρέχῃ καὶ οὐρανὸς ἔχῃ τὸν ἥλιον καὶ γῆ βόσκῃ τὰ ἴδια ζῷα καὶ θάλασσα τὰ ἐξαίρετα. 10.5.3 Τὸ δὲ ἀληθέστερον εἰπεῖν, καὶ τῶν στοιχείων παυσαμένων τούτων, κἄν τισι μὴ δοκῇ, μαρτύρων καὶ δικαίων οὐ σβεσθήσεται δόξα οὐδὲ συναπολήξει τῇ δημι ουργίᾳ τὰ κατ' ἐκείνους· ἀλλὰ τότε καὶ μᾶλλον ἀνθήσουσι πρὸς τὴν ἄφθαρτον ζωὴν μετακοσμηθείσης τῆς ἀνθρωπότητος. 10.6.1 Ἔξεστιν δὲ τοῖς ἀπίστοις καὶ περὶ τῆς μελλούσης ἐλπίδος ἡμῶν ἀμφιβάλλουσιν ἀπὸ τῶν ἐν τῷδε τῷ βίῳ πραττομένων τῆς ἀγαθῆς προσδοκίας ἡμῶν λαβεῖν βέβαια τὰ ἐνέχυρα. Ἰδοὺ γὰρ πεπλήρωται πᾶς τῆς οἰκουμένης κύκλος τῶν ἀθλητῶν τοῦ Χριστοῦ καὶ πᾶς τόπος ἔχει τῶν ἁγίων τὴν μνήμην· πάντες δὲ καιροὶ κρείττονα τῶν ἀπὸ γῆς δώρων καὶ βλαστημάτων τὰ τῶν ἀγωνιστῶν τοῖς ἑορτάζουσι χαρίζονται διηγήματα. Ὡς εἴ τις ἦν σπουδαῖος τῶν μαρτύρων φίλος, ἔθετο δὲ φροντίδα τοῖς τῶν ὅλων πανηγυρίζειν πάθεσιν, οὐκ ἂν ἡμέραν παρῆλθεν τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ ἀνεόρταστον. Πᾶσαι γὰρ ἔχουσι κρείττονα τοῦ ἡλιακοῦ κύκλου κόσμον τὰ τῶν γενναίων ἀνδραγαθήματα. 10.6.2 Ἐπειδὴ γὰρ ὁ τοῖς καλοῖς ἀντιτεταγμένος σφοδρὸν πρὸς τὸ μυστήριον τῶν χριστιανῶν ἐπηρείσατο, πάντας δὲ πάσσων τῇ κόνει τοῖς ἰδίοις φρονήμασι χωννύειν ἐσπούδαζεν καὶ μάτην ἐνασχολεῖν τοῖς ἐπιτηδεύμασι τοῦ πηλοῦ, ἀρίστων ἀνδρῶν πλῆθος ὁ Θεὸς ἀλείψας τοῖς παραγγέλμασι καὶ παιδοτριβήσας πρὸς καρτερίαν καὶ δύναμιν ἀντέστησεν τῷ ἀναιδεῖ καὶ ἐπιβούλῳ τῆς ἀνθρωπότητος. Οὗτοι δὲ καινὸν ἠγωνίσαντο καὶ οὐ τὸν συνήθη ἀγῶνα. Οὐ γὰρ τύπτοντες ἢ ῥηγνύντες ἐκράτησαν, ἀλλὰ πάσχοντες ἠρίστευσαν καὶ σφαζόμενοι. 10.7.1 Καὶ ποῖον ἐρεῖς, ὁ ἀκροατής, κράτος πολέμου; Τίς δὲ εὐδοκίμησις αὕτη τὸ στρεβλωθῆναι καὶ μαστιχθῆναι καὶ πρός γε διὰ πυρὸς ἢ ξίφους ἢ κακώσεως δεσμωτηρίων καταλῦσαι τὸν βίον; Ἀλλὰ μάθε, ὡς οἱ ὑπὲρ εὐσεβείας πόλεμοι ἀπ' ἐναντίου κατορθοῦνται τῶν ἄλλων. Οἱ μὲν γὰρ ἐν τῷ φονεῦσαι τὴν ἀριστείαν ἔχουσι, οἱ δὲ διὰ τοῦ παθεῖν καὶ πεσεῖν ἀναιροῦνται τὴν νίκην. Παρρησία δὲ δικαίων ἐκτελεῖ τὰς ὑπὲρ τοῦ κόσμου πρεσβείας· καὶ ἔλαθεν ὁ ἐχθρὸς τοῖς ἐναντίοις περιπεσὼν ἢ ἐβούλετο. Ὅσους γὰρ ἔσφαξε μαρτυρήσαντας, τοσούτους ἀνθρώπων βοηθοὺς παρεσκεύασεν. 10.7.2 Καὶ ἐπὶ πάσης δὲ πράξεως τοῦτο πάσχων εὑρίσκεται· ὅθεν ἐμποδίζειν οἴεται τὴν εὐσέβειαν, ἐκεῖθεν κατασκευάζει τῆς εὐσεβείας τὴν αὔξησιν. Τῷ γὰρ μωρῷ καὶ ἄφρονι εἰς τοὐναντίον ὁ σοφὸς Θεὸς περιίστησι τὰ βουλεύματα. Καὶ τοῦτο τοῖς πράγμασιν ἑκάστου καιροῦ παρακολουθοῦντες εὑρίσκομεν, τὴν ἔκθεσιν τοῦ Μωσέως, τὴν πρᾶσιν τοῦ Ἰωσήφ. Εὐθὺς ἐν ἀρχῇ τὸν δεύτερον ἄνθρωπον Ἄβελ ἐφόνευσεν, ἵνα τῶν εὐσεβῶν ἐκκόψῃ τὸ σπέρμα, καὶ τὸ ἔμπαλιν ἐγένετο. Ἔκτοτε γὰρ ἀνδροφόνοι μισοῦνται σφοδρῶς, ἐξ οὗ Κάϊν παρὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ κατηράθη. Τὸ τοῦ Χριστοῦ, ὅτι ἐνήργησεν εἰς Ἰουδαίους ὁ σατανᾶς, ἵνα σταυρώσωσιν αὐτόν. 10.7.3 Τὸ αὐτὸ δὴ καὶ ἐπὶ τοῖς μάρτυσι πέπονθεν, ὧν καταφρονοῦσι πολλοὶ ὑπὸ ἰδίας ἀνοίας ἐξευτελίζοντες αὐτῶν τὸ ἀξίωμα. Οὐκ ἄνθρωπός ἐστιν; Οὐκ ἐδαπανήθη τὸ σῶμα; Οὐκ ἐν ὀλίγοις λειψάνοις καὶ τούτοις ἐγκεχωσμένοις αὐτῶν ἡ μνήμη; Μάλιστα δὴ ταῦτα Ἕλληνες καὶ Εὐνομιανοί φασιν· εἴπωμεν δὲ πρὸς ἀμφοτέρους. 10.8.1 Ἡμεῖς μάρτυρας οὐ προσκυνοῦμεν, ἀλλὰ τιμῶμεν ὡς γνησίους προσκυνητὰς Θεοῦ· οὐ σέβομεν ἀνθρώπους, θαυμάζομεν δὲ
