my feet, they have numbered all my bones. And this is clear and plain even to the most contentious; for we hear in the holy Gospels the Lord himself saying to his holy disciples: Behold my hands, and my feet, that it is I myself. And indeed he also showed Thomas the marks of the nails, and the wound from the spear; then they numbered all my bones; that is, they stretched him out so when nailing him, that it was easy for one who wished to discern even the number of his bones. They observed and looked upon me; which means mocking and laughing; They parted my garments among themselves, and for my clothing they cast a lot; and this the history of the holy Gospels teaches more clearly. You that fear God, praise him; all the seed of Jacob, glorify him; let all the seed of Israel fear him. The whole nation of the Jews being divided into three orders, first into the common multitude of the nation, which was called Israel; then into the priestly order, which was the house of Aaron, and third into the order that served the priests, which was the house of Levi. Another psalm, having enumerated the three, introduces a fourth order besides the aforementioned, that of those who fear the Lord. This was the order of those from the nations turning to God. For it said: House of Israel, bless the Lord; likewise also the house of Aaron, and the house of Levi; and at the end, those who fear the Lord. But in that one, those from Israel were placed before those who fear the Lord; here, however, after the resurrection of the Sav 23.212 ior, those who fear the Lord are placed before Israel. For it was necessary, as he said: I will declare your name to my brothers, in the midst of the Church I will sing praise to you; for the hymn to be delivered first to those of his Church. And these were those from the nations saved through him; whom indeed he indicates, saying: You who fear the Lord, praise him. Very precisely he promises to declare the fatherly name to his own brothers and disciples, as to those who are better and more capable; but to his Church and the multitude of the people he no longer delivers the fatherly name; for they could not contain it; but he teaches them a hymn; then he commands the seed of Jacob to glorify him, placing the Jewish order second, after the people from the nations; whom he also names not Jacob, but the seed of Jacob and Israel, very precisely on account of their descent from the patriarch. For not because of their ancestral zeal, nor because of their likeness to their father were they worthy to be called Jacob, but on account of their seed they were called in this way; Because he has not despised nor abhorred the prayer of the poor; nor has he turned his face away from me, and when I cried to him he heard me. The poor shall eat and be satisfied, and they that seek the Lord shall praise him, their hearts shall live for ever and ever. Here he says, they shall eat; but further down, all the rich of the earth have eaten and worshipped. But when they ate, they became rich; but before eating they were called poor; whom he promises will use the food supplied by him. For the poor, he says, shall eat. And these were they whom he also places before the others in the beatitudes, saying: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven; to whom he also promised the things that follow, saying: Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. But when the poor eat, he says, and having eaten are filled, or satisfied, according to Symmachus, then they will praise the Lord, seeking him; and having eaten the food given to them by him, and having sought him, they will have the great fruit which is declared next; For their hearts shall live for ever and ever. For the bread of life, supplied to them by him, will be the cause for them
