much more us, he says, who have occupied the desert, and have nothing in common with the tumults in the cities, it is right to use the leisure of tranquility for spiritual work. Let us all therefore be ashamed, both the rich and the poor, when they, having nothing at all but only a body and hands, strive and contend to find from this an income for those in need; while we, with countless things stored up within, do not even touch our superfluities for these things. What defense then shall we have, tell me? and what excuse? And yet consider, how in old times these men were both lovers of money, and gluttons, along with other evils. For there were the flesh-pots, which the Jews remember; there was the great tyranny of the belly; but nevertheless when they willed it, they changed, and having received the fire of Christ, they at once removed their anchorage to heaven; and being more hot-tempered than others, and more prone to anger and the pleasure of the body, they imitate the incorporeal powers in meekness and the rest of the impassibility of philosophy. And if anyone has been in the country, he knows what I am saying. But if anyone has never set foot in those tents, 57.89 let him consider him who is to this day in the mouths of all, whom Egypt brought forth after the Apostles, the blessed and great Antony, and let him reckon that he too was born in that country, in which Pharaoh also was; but nevertheless he was not harmed in any way, but was even counted worthy of a divine vision, and exhibited such a life, as the laws of Christ require. And this anyone will know with accuracy, by reading the book which contains the history of his life, in which he will also see much prophecy. For concerning those who were sick with the doctrines of Arius, he both proclaimed beforehand and spoke of the harm that was to come from them, God showing him at that time, and delineating all future things before his eyes; which indeed especially among other things is a proof of the truth, that no man of the heresies outside has such a man. But that you may not hear these things from us, by looking closely into the letters of the book, you will learn all things with accuracy, and you will be instructed in much philosophy from there. And this I exhort, not that we may only go over what is written, but that we may also emulate, and let us not put forward as an excuse either country, or up- 57.90 bringing, or the wickedness of our forefathers. For if we are willing to pay attention to ourselves, none of these things will be an obstacle to us. Since Abraham also had an impious father, but he did not succeed to his lawlessness; and Hezekiah had Ahaz, but nevertheless he became a friend to God; and Joseph in the midst of Egypt then bound on the crowns of temperance; and the three youths in the midst of Babylon, and in the midst of a house, with a Sybaritic table set before them, displayed the highest philosophy; and Moses in Egypt, and Paul in the whole world; and nothing was an obstacle to any of these on the course of virtue. Considering all these things, therefore, let us too put away these superfluous excuses and pretexts, and let us take hold of the toils for virtue. For thus we shall both draw down on ourselves God's greater good will, and persuade him to take part with us in our struggles, and we shall enjoy the eternal good things; which may it be granted to us all to obtain, by the grace and love for mankind of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory and the power for ever and ever.
