Spirit, not of God is there among you,” nor Wisdom saying, “The Spirit of the Lord has filled the world; and that which holds all things together has knowledge of the voice.” Nor indeed were the apostles and the saints before them less perfect than Montanus. But he appeared on Pentecost, where the Holy Spirit which holds all things together already was, and was received, as the Acts has it thus: “Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John; who, when they had come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit; for as yet He had fallen upon none of them; they had only been baptized in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Then they laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.” And in the same way the Son was indeed always present everywhere, yet after his sojourn in the world he was perfectly known and glorified, so also the Holy Spirit indeed always filled and held all things together, but after His visitation on Pentecost He was more perfectly known and glorified. C. Third, that in constructing their argument to show that Montanus had the perfection of the Paraclete, and that Priscilla and Maximilla were prophetesses ... ........they wrote to Montanus. They say, that you do not believe there are prophets after the first appearance of the Lord; but the Savior said, he says, “Behold, I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes; and some of them you will kill, and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues.” But he speaks, not as they think, but of the apostles who foretold many things of the future and of the last times, and of the kingdom in heaven; of whom some were killed, like Stephen and James; and crucified, like Peter; and scourged, like Paul. And sometimes he also called the martyrs and the wise bishops-martyrs. But Scripture knows as prophetesses the four daughters of Philip, Deborah, Miriam the sister of Aaron, and Mary the Theotokos, who said, as the Gospel said: “From now on all women and the generations will call me blessed;” but it knows no books composed in their name; but the Apostle also forbade it, writing first to Timothy: “I do not permit women to teach;” and again in the first Epistle to the Corinthians 39.989: “Every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered disgraces her head;” that is, that it is not permitted for a woman shamelessly by her own command to write books and to te..........ach and by this to insult her head, that is, the man; for “the head of a woman is the man; and the head of a man is Christ.” And the reason for silencing women is evident; because from the beginning the woman's teaching wrongfully harmed the common race. For “the man,” as the Apostle writes, “was not deceived, but the woman was.” So, contrary to everyone, Montanus neither knew nor had the Holy Spirit, though he thought this; and this, after the ascension of the Savior, and the visitation of the Holy Spirit, more than a hundred years later, having become a priest, first of an idol, and so introducing this blind heresy. So much do we contend soberly, as far as possible, against the other heresies; but there is also another bare head fighting against the truth; nor should we leave it unrefuted.
CHAP. 42. For concerning the soul-destroying dogma of the Manichaeans, it were better
to be silent, than speaking to show how greatly human nature has sinned against the divine, and to bring to hearing things which I wish they had not even practiced in deed, nor had they come to us, some by experience, others by hearing. For it is written: “Do not answer a fool according to his folly. “But lest someone, either unwillingly fall into evil, or suppose that their practices are tolerable, it is necessary to touch upon their dogma just so much as is sufficient for the harmful part
