will teach, 3.5.8 all things that you have not now learned because you cannot bear them; but when he comes, I mean the Paraclete, he will complete the teaching, and will bring to your remembrance the things now spoken by me. and again he adds, “But when the Paraclete comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.” Through all these things he clearly shows that the one sent by him and the one who is to 3.5.9 bear witness about him is another than himself. But he develops the argument still further also through what he adds: “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away. For if I do not go away, the Paraclete will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.” In saying that he would go away, in these words he signified both his own passion 3.5.10 and his subsequent ascent to the Father. Who then is so foolish as, after so many statements, to say that the one who said these things and the one about whom he said them are one and the same, hearing him clearly defining that he speaks the truth, and showing what the truth is, that 3.5.11 unless he himself went away, the Holy Spirit would never come. But if at one time he states that the Father will send the Holy Spirit, and at another time that he himself will, he is certainly not teaching contrary things; for whatever he “sees the Father doing,” “these things the Son also does in like manner” and “as he hears, he judges.” Therefore, by the judgment of the Father, whenever the Father wills, then the Son and † through him the Savior sends to his disciples the Spirit of truth, the Paraclete, to comfort them and console them for what they suffered while preaching the gospel at the hands of 3.5.12 their persecutors; not only to comfort them, but also to teach them all the truth of the new covenant, which they could not bear to be taught by the Savior when he spoke these things to them, because they were still enslaved to the Jewish 3.5.13 way of life. And these things he fulfilled in deed after his resurrection from the dead. After which, having said to Mary, “Do not touch me, for I have not yet ascended to my Father,” after these things, having indeed ascended to the Father, he appeared to the disciples, the Holy Spirit having been sent and being with him, ready and present for the ministry to which he has been appointed, 3.5.14 when he also permits them to touch him. For then “he breathed on them” and then he gave them a certain portion of the gift of the Holy Spirit, that which brings about the forgiveness of sins; for “there are varieties of gifts,” of which he bestowed on them in part then while being with them and present to them, but after this he filled them with a greater and more perfect power. Concerning which, in the Acts of the Apostles, he said to them, “But you will receive power from on high when the Holy Spirit has come upon you”; when he also promised that they would be baptized in the Holy Spirit, which very thing was fulfilled after his ascension, on the day of Pentecost when the 3.5.15 Holy Spirit was sent to them in accordance with his own words. But since the things related to this topic require more elaboration and clarification, it is not now the time to go through them with the precision of an examination, since this is not our present purpose, but it was necessary to show that the Paraclete Spirit is other than the Son, which indeed has been demonstrated in various ways through what the Savior himself taught, both among other things and in what he said: “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now; but when he comes, the Spirit 3.5.16 of truth, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” In which again he promises that his disciples will learn from the Holy Spirit those things which he himself did not teach, speaking as about another in the phrases “when he comes” and “for he will not speak on his own authority” and “he will glorify me” and “for he will take what is mine”; for to suppose that the Savior himself is saying all these things about himself is a terrible and 3.5.17 incurable foolishness. But indeed, through these things the Savior himself clearly the
