men from the elders of Israel,” and “I will take of the spirit that is upon you, and will put it upon them” and “he gathered seventy men;” 3.2.25 and likewise the Savior also “appointed” seventy disciples of His own, “and sent them two and two before his face.” And again Moses sent out twelve men to spy out the land; and likewise, and much better, our Savior sent out twelve apostles to visit “all the nations.” Again Moses legislates, saying: “You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness.” 3.2.26 But our Savior, intensifying the law, forbids not only murdering, but also being angry; instead of not committing adultery, he advises not even to look at a woman with unchaste desire; and instead of not stealing, he commands to give one's own things to the needy; and going beyond bearing false witness, he legislates not to swear at all. 3.2.27 And why must I prolong the argument to prove that Moses and Jesus our Savior and Lord have done similar things and things near to one another, when it is possible for anyone who wishes to collect these things at his leisure? For they say that no one knew of the death of Moses, nor his burial, just as indeed no one knew of the transformation of our Savior into divinity after the resurrection. 3.2.28 If, then, through so many things no one else but only our Savior is shown to have accomplished things similar to Moses, see then that it is necessary to refer the prophecy in Moses to him alone and to no other, through which God prophesied that He would raise up one like him, saying: “I will raise up for them a prophet from their brothers, like you, and I will put my word in his mouth, and he shall speak to them as I command him. And the man who will not listen to his words, whatever the prophet shall speak in my name, I will take vengeance on him.” 3.2.29 And Moses himself, interpreting the voice of God to the people, said: “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet from your brothers; you will listen to him according to all that you asked of the Lord your God in Horeb on the day of the assembly.” 3.2.30 But that none of the prophets after Moses before our Savior was raised up like Moses, the old scripture clearly teaches, saying: “And there has not arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face in all the signs and wonders.” 3.2.31 It has been shown, therefore, that the divine spirit prophesied through Moses concerning our Savior, if indeed he alone and no other has become like Moses, constituted in accordance with the very words of Moses. But consider also another written prophecy. 3.2.32 For since countless multitudes in all the nations call our Savior and Lord, who became a man according to the flesh from the seed of Israel, Lord, confessing him as Lord on account of his divine power, this too Moses, having understood by the divine spirit, proclaimed through his writing in this way: “A man shall come forth from his seed”—he means of Israel—“and he shall be lord of many nations, and his kingdom shall be exalted.” 3.2.33 If, then, no other of the rulers and kings from the circumcision has ever become lord of many nations —for no history reveals this, but the truth shouts and cries out concerning our Savior alone— that countless multitudes from all the nations confess him as Lord, and not only with their lips but with a most genuine disposition, what then prevents us from saying that he is the one prophesied? But that Moses does not foretell these things indefinitely, nor by overshadowing the prediction with an infinite and immeasurable time, but very accurately describes the fulfillment of the things prophesied within definite times, hear what he also prophesies about this: “A ruler shall not fail from Judah, nor a leader from his loins, until he comes for whom it is reserved, and he is the expectation of the nations;” 3.2.34 through which things, that leaders and rulers from the Jews would not cease in sequence and by succession

Καὶ πάλιν Μωσῆς δώδεκα ἄνδρας ἐξέπεμψε τὴν γῆν κατασκεψομένους· ὡσαύτως δὲ καὶ πολὺ κρεῖττον ὁ ἡμέτερος σωτὴρ δώδεκα ἀποστόλους ἐξαπέστειλεν ἐπισκέψασθαι «πάντα τὰ ἔθνη». Πάλιν Μωσῆς νομοθετεῖ λέγων· «οὐ φονεύσεις, οὐ μοιχεύσεις, οὐ κλέψεις, οὐκ ἐπιορκήσεις». 3.2.26 ὁ δὲ σωτὴρ ἡμῶν ἐπιτείνων τὸν νόμον οὐ τὸ φονεύειν μόνον, ἀλλὰ καὶ τὸ θυμοῦσθαι ἀπαγορεύει, ἀντὶ τοῦ μὴ μοιχεύειν μηδ' ἐμβλέπειν γυναικὶ μετὰ ἐπιθυμίας ἀκολάστου παραινεῖ, ἀντί τε τοῦ μὴ κλέπτειν τὰ οἰκεῖα τοῖς ἐνδεέσι προΐεσθαι προστάττει, ὑπερβὰς δὲ καὶ τὸ ἐπιορκεῖν τὴν ἀρχὴν μηδὲ ὀμνύναι νομοθετεῖ. 3.2.27 Καὶ τί με δεῖ μηκύνειν τὸν λόγον εἰς ἀπόδειξιν τοῦ τὰ παραπλήσια καὶ ἐγγὺς ἀλλήλων πεποιηκέναι Μωσέα καὶ Ἰησοῦν τὸν σωτῆρα καὶ κύριον ἡμῶν, παρὸν ὅτῳ φίλον ἐπὶ σχολῆς ἀναλέξασθαι ταῦτα; ἐπεὶ καὶ τὸν θάνατον Μωσέως μηδένα φασὶν ἐγνωκέναι, μηδὲ τὴν ταφὴν αὐτοῦ, ὥσπερ οὖν οὐδὲ τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν τὴν μετὰ τὴν ἀναβίωσιν εἰς τὴν θεότητα μεταβολήν. 3.2.28 Εἰ δὴ οὖν διὰ τῶν τοσούτων οὐδεὶς μὲν ἄλλος μόνος δὲ ὁ σωτὴρ ἡμῶν παρέστη τὰ παραπλήσια Μωσεῖ διαπεπραγμένος, θέα λοιπὸν ἐπὶ μόνον αὐτὸν καὶ οὐδ' ἐφ' ἕτερον ἀναφέρειν χρὴ τὴν παρὰ Μωσεῖ προφητείαν, δι' ἧς ὅμοιον αὐτῷ παραστήσειν ὁ θεὸς ἐθέσπισεν εἰπών· «προφήτην ἐκ τῶν ἀδελφῶν αὐτῶν ἀναστήσω αὐτοῖς ὥσπερ σέ, καὶ δώσω τὸ ῥῆμά μου ἐν τῷ στόματι αὐτοῦ, καὶ λαλήσει αὐτοῖς καθὰ ἂν ἐντείλωμαι αὐτῷ. καὶ ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὃς ἂν μὴ ἀκούσῃ τῶν λόγων αὐτοῦ, ὅσα ἂν λαλήσῃ ὁ προφήτης ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματί μου, ἐγὼ ἐκδικήσω ἐξ αὐτοῦ». 3.2.29 αὐτός τε Μωσῆς πρὸς τὸν λαὸν τὴν τοῦ θεοῦ διερμηνεύων φωνὴν ἔφησεν· «προφήτην ἐκ τῶν ἀδελφῶν ὑμῶν ἀναστήσει κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν· αὐτοῦ ἀκούσεσθε κατὰ πάντα ὅσα ᾐτήσω παρὰ κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ σου ἐν Χωρὴβ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῆς ἐκκλησίας». 3.2.30 ὅτι δὲ τῶν μετὰ Μωσέα προφητῶν οὐδεὶς πρὸ τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν ὅμοιος ἐγήγερται Μωσεῖ, σαφῶς ἡ παλαιὰ γραφὴ διδάσκει λέγουσα· «καὶ οὐκ ἀνέστη ἔτι προφήτης ἐν Ἰσραὴλ ὡς Μωσῆς, ὃν ἔγνω κύριος πρόσωπον πρὸς πρόσωπον ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς σημείοις καὶ τέρασι». 3.2.31 ∆έδεικται τοίνυν τὸ ἔνθεον πνεῦμα διὰ Μωσέως περὶ τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν θεσπίσαν, εἰ δὴ μόνος αὐτὸς καὶ οὐδ' ἄλλος ὅμοιος τῷ Μωσεῖ γεγονὼς ταῖς αὐτοῦ Μωσέως φωναῖς ἀκολούθως συνέστη. σκέψαι δὲ καὶ ἄλλην προφητείαν ἀνάγραπτον. 3.2.32 ἐπειδὴ γὰρ τὸν σωτῆρα καὶ κύριον ἡμῶν, ἄνθρωπον κατὰ σάρκα γενόμενον ἐκ σπέρματος Ἰσραήλ, μυρία πλήθη ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς ἔθνεσι κυριολογεῖ, τῆς ἐνθέου δυνάμεως αὐτοῦ χάριν κύριον ὁμολογοῦντα, καὶ τοῦτο πάλιν Μωσῆς συνιδὼν τῷ θείῳ πνεύματι, διὰ τῆς αὐτοῦ γραφῆς τοῦτον ἀνεφώνησε τὸν τρόπον· «ἐξελεύσεται ἄνθρωπος ἐκ τοῦ σπέρματος αὐτοῦ» λέγει δὲ τοῦ Ἰσραήλ, «καὶ κυριεύσει ἐθνῶν πολλῶν, καὶ ὑψωθήσεται ἡ βασιλεία αὐτοῦ». 3.2.33 εἰ δὴ μηδεὶς ἄλλος πώποτε τῶν ἐκ περιτομῆς ἀρχόντων καὶ βασιλέων κύριος ἐθνῶν πολλῶν κατέστη οὐδεμία γὰρ ἱστορία δηλοῖ τοῦτο, βοᾷ δὲ καὶ κέκραγεν ἡ ἀλήθεια ἐπὶ μόνου τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν, ὅτι δὴ κύριον αὐτόν, καὶ οὐκ αὐτὸ μόνον τοῖς χείλεσι διαθέσει δὲ γνησιωτάτῃ, μυρία πλήθη ἐξ ἁπάντων τῶν ἐθνῶν ὁμολογεῖ, τί δή ποτε ἐμποδὼν μὴ οὐχὶ αὐτὸν εἶναι φάσκειν τὸν προφητευόμενον; Ὅτι δὲ Μωσῆς ταῦτα οὐκ ἀπεριορίστως προλέγει, οὐδ' εἰς ἄπειρον καὶ ἀπερίμετρον χρόνῳ ἐπισκιάζων τὴν πρόρρησιν, εὖ μάλα δὲ ἀκριβῶς τὴν τῶν προφητευομένων ἔκβασιν χρόνοις ὡρισμένοις περιγράφων, ἄκουε οἷα καὶ περὶ τούτου θεσπίζει· «οὐκ ἐκλείψει ἄρχων ἐξ Ἰούδα, καὶ ἡγούμενος ἐκ τῶν μηρῶν αὐτοῦ, ἕως ἂν ἔλθῃ ᾧ ἀπόκειται, καὶ αὐτὸς προσδοκία ἐθνῶν»· 3.2.34 δι' ὧν οὐ διαλείψειν ἑξῆς καὶ κατὰ διαδοχὴν ἡγουμένους καὶ ἄρχοντας ἐκ τοῦ Ἰουδαίων
