At this time also Alexander in Rome, when Evarestus had completed his eighth year, being the fifth in succession from Peter and Paul, received the episcopate. And the affairs of the teaching of our Savior and of the church, flourishing daily, advanced to greater progress, but the calamity of the Jews was at its height with successive evils. For indeed, when the emperor was entering his eighteenth year, a movement of the Jews rising up again destroyed a very great multitude of them. 4.2.2 For both in Alexandria and in the rest of Egypt and furthermore throughout Cyrene, as if fanned into flame by some terrible and seditious spirit, they rushed to rebel against their Greek fellow-inhabitants. And having increased the sedition to a great extent, in the following year they joined in no small war, while Lupus was at that time governor 4.2.3 of all Egypt. And indeed in the first engagement it happened that they prevailed over the Greeks; who, having fled to Alexandria, captured and killed the Jews in the city. But failing to get an alliance from these, the Jews of Cyrene continued to plunder the country of Egypt and to destroy its districts, under the leadership of Lucuas. Against whom the emperor sent Marcius Turbo with a force of infantry and a navy, and also of cavalry. 4.2.4 And he, having waged war against them in many battles and for no little time, slew many myriads of Jews, not only of those from Cyrene, but also of those from Egypt who had joined Lucuas 4.2.5 their king. And the emperor, suspecting 4.2.5 that the Jews in Mesopotamia would also attack the inhabitants there, ordered Lusius Quietus to clear them out of the province. And he, having drawn up his army, killed a very great multitude of those there, for which achievement he was appointed governor of Judea by the emperor. Καὶ τὰ μὲν τῆς τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν διδασκαλίας τε καὶ ἐκκλησίας ὁσημέραι ἀνθοῦντα ἐπὶ μεῖζον ἐχώρει προκοπῆς, τὰ δὲ τῆς Ἰουδαίων συμφορᾶς κακοῖς ἐπαλλήλοις ἤκμαζεν. ἤδη γοῦν τοῦ αὐτοκράτορος εἰς ἐνιαυτὸν ὀκτωκαιδέκατον ἐλαύνοντος, αὖθις Ἰουδαίων κίνησις ἐπαναστᾶσα πάμπολυ πλῆθος αὐτῶν 4.2.2 διαφθείρει. ἔν τε γὰρ Ἀλεξανδρείᾳ καὶ τῇ λοιπῇ Αἰγύπτῳ καὶ προσέτι κατὰ Κυρήνην, ὥσπερ ὑπὸ πνεύματος δεινοῦ τινος καὶ στασιώδους ἀναρριπισθέντες, ὥρμηντο πρὸς τοὺς συνοίκους Ἕλληνας στασιάζειν, αὐξήσαντές τε εἰς μέγα τὴν στάσιν, τῷ ἐπιόντι ἐνιαυτῷ πόλεμον οὐ σμικρὸν συνῆψαν, ἡγουμένου τηνι4.2.3 καῦτα Λούπου τῆς ἁπάσης Αἰγύπτου. καὶ δὴ ἐν τῇ πρώτῃ συμβολῇ ἐπικρατῆσαι αὐτοὺς συνέβη τῶν Ἑλλήνων· οἳ καὶ καταφυγόντες εἰς τὴν Ἀλεξάνδρειαν τοὺς ἐν τῇ πόλει Ἰουδαίους ἐζώγρησάν τε καὶ ἀπέκτειναν, τῆς δὲ παρὰ τούτων συμμαχίας ἀποτυχόντες οἱ κατὰ Κυρήνην τὴν χώραν τῆς Αἰγύπτου λεηλατοῦντες καὶ τοὺς ἐν αὐτῇ νομοὺς φθείροντες διετέλουν, ἡγουμένου αὐτῶν Λουκούα· ἐφ' οὓς ὁ αὐτοκράτωρ ἔπεμψεν Μάρκιον Τούρβωνα σὺν δυνάμει πεζῇ τε καὶ ναυτικῇ, ἔτι δὲ καὶ ἱππικῇ. 4.2.4 ὃ δὲ πολλαῖς μάχαις οὐκ ὀλίγῳ τε χρόνῳ τὸν πρὸς αὐτοὺς διαπονήσας πόλεμον, πολλὰς μυριάδας Ἰουδαίων, οὐ μόνον τῶν ἀπὸ Κυρήνης, ἀλλὰ καὶ τῶν ἀπ' Αἰγύπτου συναιρομένων Λου4.2.5 κούᾳ τῷ βασιλεῖ αὐτῶν, ἀναιρεῖ. ὁ δὲ αὐτοκράτωρ ὑποπτεύσας 4.2.5 καὶ τοὺς ἐν Μεσοποταμίᾳ Ἰουδαίους ἐπιθήσεσθαι τοῖς αὐτόθι, Λουσίῳ Κυήτῳ προσέταξεν ἐκκαθᾶραι τῆς ἐπαρχίας αὐτούς. ὃς καὶ παραταξάμενος, πάμπολυ πλῆθος τῶν αὐτόθι φονεύει, ἐφ' ᾧ κατορθώματι Ἰουδαίας ἡγεμὼν ὑπὸ τοῦ αὐτοκράτορος ἀνεδείχθη. ταῦτα καὶ Ἑλλήνων οἱ τὰ κατὰ τοὺς αὐτοὺς χρόνους γραφῇ παραδόντες αὐτοῖς ἱστόρησαν ῥήμασιν. 4.3.1 Τραϊανοῦ δὲ ἐφ' ὅλοις ἔτεσιν εἴκοσι τὴν ἀρχὴν μησὶν ἓξ
