he used his weapons and aimed at him, but with the missile having missed, he himself, being unharmed, was clearly shown to be a man of Providence. When this happened, the people withdrew from arms and tumults and continued celebrating the most mighty emperor in cheerful revelry and dancing, having suddenly changed from the greatest tumults and fears to flutes and dances, and a whole abundance of provisions descended upon the city, with all those who had been hiding wherever and had escaped the dangers streaming into the city without fear and with gladness and contributing to every kind of prosperity; for already everyone hoped that the way of life 256 would for the future be harmless and profitable for the subjects, with good things abounding in it, wherefore the emperor with the same prefect eagerly begins to raise up the Sanctuary of the great God; and a river of money flowed, poured out by the prayers of the emperor and the justice of the prefect. Therefore, the prefect immediately poured four thousand pounds of gold upon the works of the sanctuary, with no one being wronged nor any common prosperity being devised for an impious purpose; for he rejoiced, having been deemed worthy to exert himself for the honor of God and zeal for piety. And it is no wonder that, with God being present, all things are at hand for those who attribute the abundance of good things to Him rather than to the contrivances of men. And the administration, just as one pours abundant oil on an already extinguishing flame, blazed up again; and there was a delightful bustle in the proceedings, and prudent gains friendly to the law followed for those serving, and the Sanctuary of Justice was opened, and orators were distinguished in their speeches, and the production of books and rivalry returned to the whole character of the government.
