It is likely to be disturbed and troubled on both sides. But they departed, he says, like asses in a field. But this man says these things so as to oppose Job. For how shall a mortal be just before the Lord? Because, by all necessity, he is punished. For since Job was saying that “I wished to come to judgment; even if I have not sinned, yet I am punished,” to this he says that there is no one just among men. “For how will this be possible,” he says, “for one to be righteous at all? So you seek judgment and examination in vain.” 25,4c Heaven, he says, is not clean. 25,5a The one who tells the sun not to rise, and it does not rise, 5a and he commands the moon, and it does not shine, 5b and the stars are not blameless before him. 25,6a Yea, every man is rottenness 6b and a son of man is a worm. 145

25,1 ΥΠΟΛΑΒΩΝ ∆Ε ΒΑΛ∆Α∆ Ο ΣΑΥΧΙΤΗΣ ΛΕΓΕΙ· 25,2a τί γάρ ἐστι προοίμιον

ἢ φόβος παρ' αὐτοῦ; τουτέστιν· πάντα φόβου γέμει καὶ τρόμου, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν οὐδείς, ὃς δυνήσεται τὴν χεῖρα διαφυγεῖν ἐκείνην. 25,2b ὁ ποιῶν, φησίν, τὴν σύμπασαν ἐν ὑψίστῳ ἐστίν. 25,3a μὴ γάρ τις ὑπολάβοι, ὅτι ἔστι παρέλκυσις πειραταῖς; 3b ἐπὶ τίνας δὲ αὐτῶν οὐκ ἐπελεύσεται ἔνεδρα παρ' αὐτοῦ; 25,4a πῶς γὰρ ἔσται βροτὸς δίκαιος ἔναντι κυρίου; 4b ἢ τίς ἂν ἀποκαθαρίσαι ἑαυτὸν γεννητὸς γυναικῶν; ἐπειδὴ γὰρ εἶπεν· οὔπω ἐπισκοπὴν αὐτοῦ πεποίηται, «ναί», φησίν, «οὐκ ἔστι παρέλκυσις ἀνδράσι πειραταῖς.» καὶ μὴν τοὐναντίον τῶν συμβαινόντων φησίν· ἔστι γὰρ παρέλκυσις. ἀλλ' ὥστε ἐναντιωθῆναι τῷ Ἰὼβ ταῦτά φησιν οὗτος. πῶς γὰρ ἔσται βροτὸς δίκαιος ἔναντι κυρίου; ὅτι, πᾶσα ἀνάγκη, κολάζεται. ἐπειδὴ γὰρ ὁ Ἰὼβ ἔλεγεν, ὅτι «ἐβουλόμην ἐλθεῖν εἰς κρίσιν· εἰ καὶ μὴ ἥμαρτον, ἀλλ' ὅμως κολάζομαι», πρὸς τοῦτο οὗτός φησιν, ὅτι οὐκ ἔστι δίκαιος οὐδεὶς ἐν ἀνθρώποις. «πῶς γὰρ ἔσται δυνατὸν τοῦτο», φησίν, «δίκαιον ἕνα εἶναι καθόλου; ὥστε περιττῶς ζητεῖς τὴν κρίσιν καὶ τὴν ἐξέτασιν.» 25,4c οὐρανός, φησίν, οὐ καθαρός. 25,5a ὁ λέγων τῷ ἡλίῳ μὴ ἀνατέλλειν καὶ οὐκ ἀνατέλλει, 5a σελήνῃ δὲ συντάσσει, καὶ οὐκ ἐπιφαύσκει, 5b ἄστρα δὲ οὐκ ἄμεμπτα ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ. 25,6a ἔα δέ, πᾶς ἄνθρωπος σαπρία 6b καὶ υἱὸς ἀνθρώπου σκώληξ. 145

2b πότερον οὐχ ᾧ πολλὴ ἰσχὺς καὶ ὁ βραχίων κραταιός ἐστιν; 26,3a τίνι συμβεβούλευσαι; οὐχ ᾧ ἡ πᾶσα σοφία; 3b ἢ τίνι ἐπακολουθεῖς; οὐχ ᾧ μεγίστη
