running back was spread out, for this reason, as being shown a second time and in the last days, it was toward the west. 5.43 For this reason the Church also has a tradition for Christians everywhere to make one spiritual worship to God toward the east, as to Him who first appeared there to men, remembering the things of old and now giving thanks to Him who multiplied and spread out the race of men from east to west. 5.44 For the Jews, thinking more bodily about God, made their worship toward Jerusalem, where the temple was built. And it is possible to learn about this from the history concerning Daniel, who, opening the windows which faced toward Jerusalem, directed his attention toward the temple and made his worship. Therefore, of course, one found more to the east of Jerusalem makes his worship toward the west, and one more to the west, toward the east, and one more to the north, toward the south, and one more to the south, toward the north, in a certain way the four being shown worshipping toward each other. But Christians not so, but they make one spiritual worship of a single manner, as God is uncircumscribable, toward the east, to Him who from the beginning appeared to them from the east and filled them unto the west. To Him be the glory forever. Amen. Concerning the vestment of the priest 5.45 And the vestment of the priest is thus: a fringed tunic and an ephod and a robe reaching to the feet and a tiara and a girdle and a mitre and a plate, two shoulder-pieces on the two shoulders of the priest, joining one to the other for him and bent back from the left to the right and from the right to the left, covering the nakedness of his neck; the embroidered shoulder-pieces were woven from gold thread and true purple and blue color and fine linen and scarlet. And two emerald stones, on his two shoulders on the shoulder-pieces, engraved with the names of the twelve tribes, six on the one stone and six on the one stone. 5.46 And the oracle of judgment was a woven piece, a span in length and a span in width, square, doubled, of gold thread, again of the four colors, intricately woven, having also stones in four rows; from three stones there are twelve, covered in gold and fastened to the oracle, each stone having engraved on it the name of one tribe. And he commands two golden bosses to be made on the two shoulders, on the front part, and from them tassels plaited of gold and colors, and for the oracle to hang down upon the breast, and again with two chains of gold from the two sides of the oracle bent from below and from behind, being bound alternately to the two edges of the two shoulder-pieces which are on the back of the priest, so that the chains might be on the back of the priest in a criss-cross fashion, binding the oracle to the shoulder-pieces in front and behind. 5.47 And the undergarment was entirely blue in color from the breast down to the legs, its opening was woven together with it. And the lower hem, as on a fringe, was wide, of various colors; and it had golden bells and golden pomegranates and flower-shaped ornaments hanging one after another on the fringe; and a turban of fine linen and an embroidered girdle, which girded the undergarment from above, under the breast. And he wore a mitre on his forehead and above the mitre, a blue one, as on a fringe, having a golden plate, on which was the seal of holiness of the Lord, that is to say the so-called tetragrammaton; and thus he entered into the Holy Place. And breeches, that is, linen trousers, he wore from the loins to the thighs on account of unseemliness. It is possible then to also sketch the figure of the priest as such. Here we have sketched the figure of the priest's vestments, from the front and from the back. But it has been shown more accurately concerning it in the explanation. Note 5.48 Therefore there are manifest types of certain things of the figure, and manifest for seemliness and for fear, such as the two emerald stones, which were carried on his shoulders, in which were the names of the twelve tribes,
