of the nation until the coming of the one who is expected, and that when the rulers among them have ceased, the one prophesied will come. 3.2.35 Now he does not name Judah as the tribe, but since by a certain designation in later times the whole nation of the Jews was named from the royal tribe of Judah, so that even to this day they are called Jews, very wonderfully and prophetically he named the whole nation of the Jews, just as we also call them Jews. 3.2.36 Then he says that rulers and leaders will not cease from their nation before the one prophesied has come; and when this one has come, the rule of the Jews will be immediately abolished, but he himself will be the expectation not of the Jews any longer, but of the nations. And this you could not apply to the prophets, but only to our savior and lord. 3.2.37 For at the same time that he was present among men, the kingdom of the Jews was taken down; and at once their ruler by succession from their ancestors and the leader according to their own laws had ceased, when Augustus was the first of the Romans to rule alone, and Herod, from foreign nations, was appointed their king. 3.2.38 And they indeed had ceased, but he has been revealed as the expectation of the nations throughout the whole inhabited world, according to the divine prophecy, so that even now all those from all the nations who have believed in him place in him the hope of their expectation which is according to God. 3.2.39 And Moses indeed announces to us all as good news these things and many others besides them concerning the Christ; and Isaiah also, in agreement with him, distinctly foretells these things concerning a certain one who will rise up from the seed and succession of David the king: "a rod shall come forth from the root of Jesse, and a flower shall grow up from the root; and the spirit of God shall rest upon him, a spirit of wisdom and understanding" and the rest. 3.2.40 Then, going on, in a prophetic manner he proclaims the change of the foreign nations, both barbarians and Greeks, and of the most savage and beast-like men to what is meek and gentle, which will come about through the teaching of Christ. So he says: "and the wolf shall feed with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid, and the calf and the bull and the lion shall feed together," 3.2.41 and things similar to these, which he immediately interprets, making them clear, saying: "and there shall be one who rises up to rule the nations, in him the nations will hope." 3.2.42 For he clearly showed that the irrational cattle and the aforementioned wild beasts were none other than the nations, on account of their bestial manner; of which nations he says the one who rises up from the seed of Jesse will rule, from whom indeed our savior and lord is descended, in whom the nations that believe in him still now hope, in accordance with the prophecy "and there shall be one who rises up to rule the nations, in him the nations will hope." 3.2.43 Compare this now, distinguishing it from what is said by Moses, and apply "there shall be one who rises up to rule the nations" to "a man shall come forth from his seed, and he will rule over many nations," and "in him the nations will hope" to "and he himself shall be the expectation of the nations." 3.2.44 For what is the difference in saying "in him the nations will hope" or "he himself shall be the expectation of the nations"? Again the same Isaiah, going on, prophesies these things concerning the Christ: "Behold my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased, he shall bring forth judgment to the nations," and he adds: "until he establishes judgment on the earth, and in his name the nations will hope." 3.2.45 Now for a second time in these things the prophet sets down that the nations will hope in the Christ, having said above "in him the nations will hope," and here "and in his name the nations will hope." And it has also been said to David, that indeed "from the fruit of his loins" someone will rise up, concerning whom God next says: "He will call upon me, 'You are my father'"; "And I will make him the firstborn." 3.2.46 and concerning him it is said again: "And he will rule from sea to sea, and from the rivers to the ends of the
