He is of the race of the Gauls, as you also know, and in avenging them he contrived against me. And he has a debauched life; for he is a catamite, and he ought not to have lived in Rome, but he must be cast out dishonorably and in his lifetime his name be taken away and he be given as a sacrifice to the chthonic gods. And the senate and the army consented; and immediately stripping him of his rank, he unclothed him naked, and wrapping him in a mat and girding him with a masinon rope, he placed the name of the same senator by his written order on the month Sextilis, causing the same month from that time to be called February, as the name of the month was worthy of being ill-omened and dishonorable, commanding the vernaculi, that is, the watchmen, to strike 187 him with balissene staffs and to cry out, 'Exithi, februari,' which is in the Greek language, 'Go out, you who are cleansed by sacrifice.' And thus cast out from the city of Rome, the same senator died, having been sacrificed to the chthonic gods. And the same Mallion, having permitted the priests to make a sacrifice in the same month of February, commanded that in every city of the Romans the same form of the garment of matting be made and the rest annually, and that the 'February' and 'purified' month be driven before the city while being beaten, signifying the victory over Brennus and the Gauls and the vengeance on the enemy of Mallion, which happens to this day in every city of the Romans. This account I found in the city of Thessalonica; and having read it, I found the book was inscribed, 'The Account of Brunichius, a Roman Chronicler.' And after the consuls administered for many years, Octavian Augustus was the first to rule again as king. He reproached Mallion Capitolinus for having placed the ill-omened month of February in the middle, and immediately the same Augustus, by his divine command, moved the name of the month of February and ordered it to be after all the months, and in its place he placed his own name, August, as the sixth from the first, and the month before August he called after the name of his deified uncle, Julius Caesar. 188 And after Tarquin was expelled from the kingship, the aforesaid two consuls governed the city, Brutus the Great and Collatinus the husband of Lucretia, and many other consuls until Julius Caesar, for 464 years. And in the aforesaid times, after Joachim Addus, who was a priest of the Jews, Plato was a philosopher and teacher of the Greeks; who, writing to Timaeus concerning God, said that the divine is in three names, but one power and godhead, saying that the first cause is the Good that pities all things, the second cause is the Mind that created all things, the third cause is the life-giving Soul that gave life to all things. He therefore confessed the three powers to be one godhead. These things Cyril, the most holy bishop of Alexandria, included in his writings against Julian the apostate emperor, saying that all men, ignorant of the future, foretold the holy trinity in a single godhead. And in the time of the same Plato there were also other philosophers and teachers of the Greeks, Xenophon and Aeschines and Aristotle. who introduced to men the error of metempsychosis; and that Callisto, the daughter of Lycaon, was 189 transformed into a bear, and Hippomene, the daughter of 189 Megareus, into a lion, and Io, the daughter of Inachus, into a heifer, and Atalanta, the daughter of Schoeneus, into a peacock, and Philomela, the daughter of Pandion, into a swallow, and Procne, her sister, into a nightingale, and Niobe, the daughter of Tantalus, was transformed into a stone. And they and those after them related other such myths. And after the said Artaxerxes, king of the Persians, died, Ochus reigned,
