It was a fire and was extinguished and became dust by the philanthropy of God. 120 In the same year, the emperor Leo fell ill in Byzantium and died, having left Leo, the son of Zeno and Ariadne, still an infant, whom he had appointed emperor in the month of January, the 12th indiction; and in the month of February he crowned Zeno his own father in the kathisma of the Hippodrome, with Verina and Ariadne assisting him. But after Leo the younger had reigned jointly with his own father Zeno for only ten months, he died of an illness, and Zeno reigned alone for 17 years and 2 months, including the 20 months of the tyranny of Basiliscus. And Zeno, managing his rule badly, in the beginning Saracens overran Mesopotamia, and Huns overran Thrace, doing great damage to affairs, while the emperor was occupied with unseemly pleasures and unjust actions. Year of the world 5967. Year of the divine incarnation 467. Emperor of the Romans, Zeno, 17 years. 1st. Emperor of the Persians, Peroz, 24 years. 23rd. Bishop of Rome, Simplicius, 14 years. 6th. Bishop of Constantinople, Acacius, 17 years. 4th. Bishop of Jerusalem, Juvenal, 38 years. 37th. Bishop of Alexandria, Timothy, 15 years. 15th. 39th Bishop of Antioch, Peter I, 3 years. 1st. In this year Leo the younger, having reigned jointly for only ten months with his own father Zeno and having come forth as consul, died, and Zeno held the empire alone. But Basiliscus, the brother of Verina, Zeno's mother-in-law, while staying in Heraclea of Thrace, with the cooperation of both Verina and some of the senate, rebelled against Zeno; Fearing him, Zeno, with Ariadne his own wife and sufficient funds, flees to Isauria to a certain strong fortress called Urba, and from there moved to Sbida * for this reason with his wife Ariadne, with Illus and Trocundus besieging him, for the time being with the goodwill of Basiliscus. And Basiliscus was proclaimed emperor at the Campus, and he made Marcus his son Caesar and crowned Zenodia his own wife Augusta; and immediately he set himself against the faith, with Zenodia especially urging him to this. He recalled Timothy Aelurus by means of an edict, and Peter the Fuller who was hiding in the monastery of the Acoemetae, and as many other enemies of the holy council of Chalcedon who were speaking boldly against the truth. And Aelurus, having gathered disorderly Alexandrians residing in Byzantium, came from the palace in procession to the church, riding upon a donkey. And having come to the so-called Octagon, he fell and broke his foot, and returned with shame. And Basiliscus sent this man to Alexandria with edicts against the council, and Peter the Fuller to Antioch, having strengthened both of them against the truth. And Timothy Salophaciolus, bishop of Alexandria, having learned that Timothy Aelurus had arrived, withdrew to the monasteries of Canopus, where he had also practiced asceticism. And although Aelurus had mistreated many, he was not able to harm Timothy because he was beloved by all. And as Aelurus was entering Alexandria, his partisans shouted that shameful thing: "You have fed your enemies, O pope." And the unholy one responded: "Yes; truly I have fed them." This impious man also anathematized the council of Chalcedon. And Julian, the bishop of Antioch, died from grief over the things that were happening. And Peter the Fuller, having seized the throne, proceeded to anathemas and disturbances. From which murders and plunderings occurred because of the addition to the Trisagion. And Basiliscus by a general edict cast out the council of Chalcedon, also ordering Acacius of Constantinople to do the same. But the whole city, with women and children, having gathered in the church against Basiliscus, prevented this. And Acacius, dressing in black, draped the throne and the altar in black.
