in the voice of a trumpet. For here the Holy Spirit renders both the shout and the voice of the trumpet. For in the ascent of the Son of God into the heavens, it is likely that the angels who ministered to him in the economy toward men preceded him, and prepared the heavenly gates for him, and uttered voices and angelic shouts, those which are found in the psalm; which indeed he called a shout and the voice of a trumpet, saying: God has gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet. OF DAVID, 24. Since neither a psalm is inscribed, nor an ode, nor anything similar, nor are the preceding things directed to the end; but they are words written by David in the Holy Spirit; for this reason among the other interpreters it is inscribed "of David"; we will reasonably say that it contains instruction for confession to God, which David himself first used, and then handed down to us, teaching how one who is sick must heal their own soul through confession. To you, O Lord, I have lifted up my soul; my God, in you I have trusted, may I not be put to shame; nor let my enemies laugh at me; for indeed all who wait for you shall not be put to shame. He says these things, as if having lifted up, and transferred, and raised his own soul on high from the things here below; and having placed it above, near to God in disposition, through turning away from mortal and human things, and a genuine turning toward him. Then he says: This I have done, not trusting in myself, but trusting in you, my God, using great boldness. He who has despised all sensible and visible things, but has lifted up his soul to the incorporeal and invisible God, dares to call upon God as having become his own possession; wherefore he says: My God, in you I have trusted. And the things from me, he says, are these. But for the rest, I need prayer, and cooperation from you, God, so as not to fall from the goal, nor to be cast down as if falling from a high peak. Therefore I ask and beseech not to be put to shame, nor to be laughed at by my enemies; and these things will be mine from your help, my God. For the first things were from my own choice, to lead and carry my own soul wherever I wish; but the second things require your assistance and cooperation. Let those who transgress without cause be ashamed. Only to endure in purpose, and not to change, and to depart from the faith. For the fickle and those carried about by every wind would at some time suffer the things of shame 23.225; but not also those who have learned to say: Waiting, I waited for the Lord. But instead of, transgressing, the others and the fifth edition have translated, those who apostatize; clearly declaring that transgressors, and those not remaining in their former purpose, will be ashamed. For finding the fruit of their own apostasy to be empty, as having apostatized from God without cause, they will be ashamed. Make your ways known to me, O Lord, and teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and I have waited for you all the day long. And the ways of the Lord are the administrations of his providence, according to which he governs all things; concerning which the divine Apostle taught, saying: O the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and his ways past finding out. Thus also his paths would be the particular administrations of the whole, according to which, as if traveling over the things in heaven and on earth with providential power, he shows his paths and ways to those who are able to understand; wherefore according to Symmachus, it is said, and teach me your ways. And teaching me these things, establish me in your truth, so that I may not

Μόνον ὑπομένειν τῇ προθέσει, μηδὲ μεταβάλλειν, καὶ μεθίστασθαι τῆς πίστεως. Οἱ γὰρ εὐρίπιστοι καὶ παντὶ ἀνέμῳ περιφερόμενοι πάθοιεν ἄν ποτε τὰ τῆς αἰσχύ 23.225 νης· οὐ μὴν καὶ οἱ λέγειν μεμαθηκότες· Ὑπομένων ὑπέμεινα τὸν Κύριον.
