this also thus made us lacking in all things. Say, what is the end? And he shall be as the wild tamarisk in the desert. And he here alludes to Zedekiah, who fled to Pharaoh against the Babylonian. This tree is fruitless, and always living in deserts, not brought into any cultivation, nor abounding in fruits. - *This wood is weak. *And he shall dwell in salty places, in the desert, in a salt land, which is not inhabited. That is, he will enjoy no good thing; but he will be barren, and the land salty, which is not inhabited for bearing fruit. And blessed. I am the Lord God. The word is to those who are secretly impious, and think they are hidden. He speaks about their counsels, that God knows them even when they are hidden. Nothing is so obscure as the heart of man. For this reason another says: A deep, hidden heart is man, and who shall know him? Perhaps you think to be hidden, he says. This is not so; I know everything concerning you. *The partridge called, it gathered what it did not hatch, making its wealth not with judgment. The word is to the greedy. But some have interpreted it thus: It is the custom, he says, for partridges after the eggs are laid, to call the young with their voice, and to strip the one that bore them. Thus, he says, these also gather the labor of another, for which they did not toil. *In the midst of his days they shall leave him. That is, he will not enjoy what belongs to others. *And in his last days he shall be a fool. 64.917 That is, dying he will know the vanity of his diligence, leaving his wealth to others. But some have interpreted it thus from the Hebrew: A partridge broods, and does not bring forth; as if the female were accustomed to steal eggs, then having warmed and hatched them, leads them to water, and having given them drink, kills them. So that it might say, that thus in vain the greedy man gathers wealth. In the midst of his days they shall leave him. The Hebrew, he says, has it thus: In the midst of these days he will leave it, that is, his wealth. *And in his last days he shall be a fool. The Hebrew says: And his end shall be mournful. But I consider the former meaning better and clearer. He speaks of the Egyptian, at the same time mentioning his lack of conscience; and the phrase, they will abandon, means, they will be led away as captives. God was in labor with them; that one having called was only heard; In his last days he shall be a fool. That is, he will be convicted not of gathering his own things, but those of others. For what could be more foolish than one who thinks highly of himself for things that are not his own? A throne of glory. He speaks of the kingdom of God, that it is indestructible and not made by hands, and remains by itself, even if no one exists. A sanctuary. Not a temple, nor anything else of the sort, but God alone. Let them be put to shame. For they have no security. Because they have forsaken the spring of life. This prophet continually calls God this very thing. For what reason? Because all things that make life are from him, which also nothing. Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed. It is not possible to say this of a man; often he treats, but the sick one is not healed. It is not possible for the hope in you to fail. And what were you weary of, he says, O you? heal a sick soul; for it is likely that he is disturbed by the reproaches. Save me and I shall be saved. It is possible to say this to God alone.
