But the great Daniel, having descended from his pillar out of divine zeal, for a time went to church with Acacius and the people. 122 And Peroz campaigned against the Nephthalite Huns, and having turned them, he pursued them. But they, making their escape in narrow places little by little in the mountains, withdrawing to the right and to the left, getting behind them, trapped them when they were unguarded. And Peroz, being in a tight spot, asked for peace. But the king of the Nephthalites would not do this before Peroz fell and did obeisance to him and confirmed by oaths never again to campaign against the Nephthalites. But he, constrained by necessity, was forced to do this and returned in great disgrace. Wherefore, not bearing the shame, he again campaigned against them, having broken his oaths. But Basiliscus, having learned these things and fearing the fervor of the city's people, departed, having ordered the senate that no one meet with Acacius; for the people were about to set the city on fire. And Daniel, the wondrous Stylite, taking the monks and the zealots of the people, went out to Basiliscus and spoke to him with great boldness; but he did not receive them. In the same year, Peroz, again campaigning against the White Huns, those called Nephthalites, perished with his entire army. 123 For having dug a deep trench and having placed reeds over it and having covered it with earth, they remained inside. And having sent a few to meet them, and again turning to flight and crossing the narrow places one by one, they fled together with the others. But the Persians, suspecting nothing terrible, pursued them uncontrollably, and all together with Peroz and his children, falling into the pit, they perished. And Peroz, perceiving the disaster, took the pearl which he himself had, most white and large, exceedingly precious, from his right ear and threw it away, so that no one might wear it after him, since it was extraordinarily worthy of admiration, such as had never before belonged to another king. Thus Peroz was destroyed with his entire army. But those who had not campaigned with Peroz chose Kavad, the younger son of Peroz, as king. And the barbarians ruled the Persians for two years for the payment of tribute. But Kavad, using his power more violently, decreed that women be held in common; wherefore the Persians deposed him from power and, having bound him, put him in prison, and they made Blases, also called Valan, the brother of Peroz, king, because there was no other son of Peroz. But the wife of Kavad ministered to him in the prison. And the warden of the prison began to desire his wife, as she was beautiful. And Kavad besought his wife to give in to the man, if somehow he might be able to escape from the fortress. And when this was done, the wife, entering to Kavad without hindrance, attended to him. And a certain friend of Kavad, named Seoses, made known to Kavad through his wife that he had horses and men prepared in a certain place. And Kavad, when night fell, persuades his wife to give her own clothes to him, and for her to wear his garments and to sit in the prison. Thus, therefore, Kavad, having come out of the prison and having eluded the guards, mounted his horse somewhere far from the prison and with Seoses arrived among the Nephthalite Huns. And to him the king gives his daughter as a wife, and thus a large army

Καβάδης δὲ ἐπὶ τὸ βιαιότερον τῇ ἀρχῇ χρώμενος κοινὰς τὰς γυναῖκας ἐνομοθέτησεν ἔχειν· ὅθεν οἱ Πέρσαι τοῦτον τῆς ἀρχῆς παρέλυσαν καὶ δήσαντες εἰς φυλακὴν ἀπέθεντο, Βλάσην δέ, τὸν καὶ Οὐαλᾶν, ἀδελφὸν Περόζου, βασιλέα ἐποίησαν διὰ τὸ μὴ εἶναι ἄλλον υἱὸν Περόζου. ἡ δὲ γυνὴ Καβάδου διηκόνει αὐτῷ ἐν τῇ φρουρᾷ. ὁ δὲ τῆς εἱρκτῆς ἄρχων ἤρξατο ἐρᾷν τῆς γυναικὸς εὐπρεποῦς οὔσης. ὁ δὲ Καβάδης παρεκάλεσε τὴν γυναῖκα ἐνδοῦναι τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ, εἴ πως δυνηθῇ ἐκφυγεῖν τοῦ φρουρίου. τούτου δὲ γενομένου, ἀκωλύτως ἡ γυνὴ πρὸς Καβάδην εἰσιοῦσα τοῦτον ἐθεράπευεν. φίλος δὲ Καβάδου τις, ὀνόματι Σεόσης, διὰ τῆς γυναικὸς τῷ Καβάδῃ ἐδήλου, ὅτι ἵππους τε καὶ ἄνδρας ἐμπαρασκεύους ἔχειν ἔν τινι χωρίῳ. ὁ δὲ Καβάδης, νυκτὸς ἐπιλαβούσης, πείθει τὴν γυναῖκα ἐσθῆτα μὲν αὐτῷ τὴν οἰκείαν δοῦναι, τὰ δὲ αὐτοῦ ἱμάτια φορέσαι αὐτὴν καὶ ἐπὶ τῆς εἱρκτῆς καθέζεσθαι. οὕτω μὲν οὖν Καβάδης ἐξελθὼν τοῦ δεσμωτηρίου, τοὺς φύλακας διαλαθὼν πόρρω που τοῦ δεσμωτηρίου τῷ ἵππῳ ἐπιβὰς σὺν τῷ Σεόσῃ εἰς Οὔννους τοὺς Νεφθαλίτας ἀφίκετο. καὶ τούτῳ τὴν θυγατέρα ὁ βασιλεὺς γυναῖκα δίδωσιν, οὕτω τε στράτευμα πολὺ
