and they perform the *saximon*, as the regulation provides. But if any of them are seated in the reception hall, rising up they complete the *saximon*, and again at the emperor's command they are seated, each in his own rank. It should be known that for the *saximon* all the aforementioned enter together, but for the poems, that is, the imperial songs of the 604 Brumalia sung antiphonally, they pass through. For when the *magistroi* with their order have finished, those of the *kouboukleion* begin. Then, when those of the *kouboukleion* with their order have finished, the *anthypatoi patricioi* begin their own imperial songs of the Brumalia and they too finish, as has been said before, with their own order. In the second group the commanders of the *tagmata* enter: those of the Scholae, of the Arithmos, of the Noumeroi in one group; and those of the Exkoubitores, the Hikanatoi and of the imperial fleet in another group. All these, during the *saximon*, receive *apokombia* from the *epi tēs trapezēs*, acclaiming and praying for the emperor and for his auspicious day of the Brumalia. It should be known that in the time of the Christ-loving lord Leo it was regulated thus. On the day after the Brumalia, one more intimate table for three and thereabouts was set up in the breakfast-room, at which dined with the great emperor those who usually dined with him, especially the intimates and relatives of the emperor, the *magistroi*, the *praepositoi*, the *anthypatoi patricioi* and intimate *prōtospatharioi* and certain other acquaintances of the emperor. And in the renowned Triclinium of Justinian another separate table was set up for six and thereabouts, at which sat the 605 junior emperor and the rest, *magistroi*, *anthypatoi*, *patricioi*, officials and *prōtospatharioi*, just as the tactical *klētorologion* prescribes. It should be known that in the time of the Christ-loving lord Michael, son of Theophilos, when a great winter had occurred, with violent winds blowing and much snow having fallen, the secret *phialē* of the Trikonchos became inaccessible, and neither the *magistroi*, the *anthypatoi*, the *patricioi* of the senate, nor all those of the *kouboukleion* came down to celebrate the usual Brumalia rites, but with everyone having entered the Triclinium of the Lausiakos, the *praepositos* came out and summoned all the aforementioned, and he stations them before the gate of the Triclinium of the Lausiakos which leads into the portico of the Chrysotriklinos, that is, in the Horologion, and the *prōtovestiarios* came out and gave to the first *magistros* the customary *apokombion*, and having made the customary acclamations to the emperors (and there were also the poems fitting for the day of the Brumalia), they went out without lighting candles. The Domestikos of the Scholae and the Domestikos of the Exkoubitores and the Domestikos of the Hikanatoi together with the *tagmatic* troops went down into the Thermastra. For the Droungarios of the Vigla was keeping his 606 own post in the Hippodrome; but the Sakellarios went down into the same Thermastra, and he gave the *apokombion* to the Domestikos of the Scholae, and both the Domestikos and all those of the *tagmata* made the customary acclamations to the emperors, singing also the poems fitting for the day of the Brumalia. Then thus went away the *magistroi*, *anthypatoi*, *patricioi* and all the senators and those of the *kouboukleion*, each to his own house, and those of the *tagmata* each to his own post. It should be known that this order of the Brumalia was altered and brought to an end during the reign of the lord Romanos. For he, on the pretext of piety, and believing it not to be right for Romans to celebrate the Brumalia according to the ancient customs of the Ausonians, ordered these things to cease, not taking into account those great and famous emperors, such as: not that great and famous Constantine, not Theodosios, not Marcian, not Leo the Leomakelles, not Justinian, nor the other Christ-loving ones, whom I would even call demigods, but, what seemed good to him was considered law and rule and correctness and piety. But in the time of the Christ-loving lord Constantine the order of the Brumalia found its revival. Wherefore, at the Brumalia of the great emperor the old *apokombion* of 20 pounds was given, at that of the junior emperor 10 pounds, and at that of the 607 Augusta 8 pounds. But this Constantine, the Christ-loving emperor, decreed that in place of all these Brumalia, at the Brumalia of the great emperor an *apokombion* in coin of 50 pounds be given. And at the table, with his own hand to the friends dining with him, thus, that is, double *miliaresia* each: to the *magistroi* 106 *miliaresia* each, and one *chasdion bēlarion* each; to the *anthypatoi*
