and this, again he teaches in order, saying: “‘Because his soul was delivered to death, and he was reckoned among the lawless, and he bore the sins of many, and because of their sins he was delivered up.’” 3.2.69 For in return for these things, the Father, rewarding him on account of his obedience and 3.2.69 endurance, has granted him the things set forth; for he became “obedient” to the Father “unto death”; wherefore it is declared that he will inherit many, and not before, but after his soul was delivered to death and he was reckoned among the lawless. For because of these things it is said that he will inherit many and will divide the spoils of the strong. 3.2.70 And I think that through these words the resurrection from the dead of the one prophesied is undoubtedly presented. For how else is it possible to conceive of one led as a sheep to the slaughter, and delivered to death for the iniquities of the Jewish people, and reckoned with the lawless and delivered to burial, then being cleansed by the Lord, and seeing light with him, and inheriting many, and distributing spoils to his own? And in another way, concerning his coming to life again after death, David says somewhere, prophesying in the person of Christ: “You will not abandon my soul to Hades, nor will you let your holy one see corruption,” 3.2.71 and again: “O Lord, you have brought up my soul from Hades, you have saved me from those who go down into the pit,” and again: “You who lift me up from the gates of death, that I may declare all your praises.” 3.2.72 And I think that not even the most utterly ignorant are able to contradict all these things. But nevertheless the conclusion of Isaiah’s prophecy proclaims the good news to the soul that was long barren and destitute of God, or rather the church from the gentiles, in accordance with the theory of what has been said. 3.2.73 For since Christ endured all things for her sake, it is fitting that after the predictions about him, he adds, saying: “Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear; break forth and cry aloud, you who are not in labor; for the children of the desolate one are many more than of her who has a husband. For the Lord has said, Enlarge the place of your tent, and of your courts, pitch them, do not spare; lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes, still spread out to the right and to the left; and your seed will inherit nations.” 3.2.74 But the word proclaims the good news of these things to the church from the gentiles, spread throughout the whole world and extending from the rising of the sun to its setting, presenting this most clearly through “and your seed will inherit nations.” 3.2.75 Since the things concerning the passage require more elaboration, let these things have been sufficiently touched upon by us for the present; and you yourself at your leisure would be able to collect very many things about the subject at hand, and the present treatise of the Evangelical Proof will in due course deliver and interpret each point. 3.2.76 But for now, for the present, concerning the prediction and foreknowledge of the prophets about our Savior, and how he preached the good news of the presence of future good things to all men, what has been said is sufficient, proclaiming beforehand the arrival of a certain prophet and lawgiver of piety like Moses, and his race and tribe and the place from whence he would come, and the time at which he is prophesied to arrive, and his birth, and death, and coming to life again, and his rule over all nations, 3.2.77 all of which things have been shown, and will be shown yet more through what follows, to be fulfilled in our Savior and Lord alone. 3.2.78 But these things have been set forth from the sacred oracles for those who believe them; but to those who disobey the prophetic writings we will respond separately, for the time being making the examination as about a common man and like the rest, so that, whenever he should be revealed as much better by an incomparable superiority and different from all who have been benefactors among men from of old, then we may in due course also discuss the things concerning his more divine nature, showing from clear proofs that he was not of human
