Methuselah was in the βρμαʹ year of the world, I mean in the φʹ year of Noah, in which also his first son Shem was born, being ωνεʹ, 132 of Lamech, Noah's father, in the year χπζʹ, and in the χʹ year of Noah, and the ρʹ of the life of Shem and the νεʹ of the most long-lived Methuselah, the flood happened upon the earth. And Methuselah lived on, along with the same year of the flood, until the βσνςʹ year of the world, for the remaining ιεʹ years, if indeed we believe to be true the unerring and divinely inspired histories concerning him and those before him, recorded in the sacred tablets, and also of those after them, as will be set down below. Shem, the first son of Noah, being ργʹ years old, in the βʹ year after the flood, begot Arphaxad in the βσμγʹ year of the world, which was the χαʹ of the life of Noah. And Shem lived on φʹ until the βψμβʹ year of the world. And Noah lived τνʹ years after the flood, and died in the βφζβʹ year of the world, in the υνʹ year of the life of Shem. Arphaxad, being ρλεʹ years old, begot Cainan in the βτοζʹ year of the world, and lived τνεʹ years until the βψλβʹ year of the world; and he died ιʹ years before his own father Shem. But some of the copies, like that of Eusebius, have υγʹ for Arphaxad after he begot Sala, which we do not follow at all, having in every way erred from the truth of the times and of the generations. For instead of Cainan, both Africanus and Eusebius say that Sala was born to Arphaxad, and they rank the ιδʹ generation of Sala as ιγʹ, making no mention at all of the second Cainan, whom the sacred books of Genesis everywhere and the Gospel according to Luke have handed down as the son of Arphaxad and the ιγʹ from Adam, and the father of Sala, who is the ιδʹ from Adam. Cainan, being ρλʹ years old, begot Sala in the βφζʹ year of the world, and lived on υλʹ years. But some of the copies contain τλʹ. Sala, being ρλʹ years old, begot Eber in the βχλζʹ year of the world, and Sala lived on τλʹ years until the βξζʹ year of the world. And in the σκεʹ year of Sala, Arphaxad died. Eber, being ρλδʹ years old, begot Peleg in the βψοαʹ year of the world, and Eber lived σοʹ years after he begot Peleg, until the γμʹ year of the world. Therefore in the ρʹ year of Eber, which was the βψλςʹ year of the 133 world, they began to build the tower. And in the ρμʹ, that is, in the cosmic year βψοςʹ, the languages were confused, in the εʹ year of the life of Peleg, and they were scattered in the ςʹ year, as some have precisely stated, not improbably I think. Peleg, being ρλʹ years old, begot Reu, and lived σθʹ years. †And he also died before his own father Eber, the second after Lamech, by σλʹ years.† Reu, being ρλβʹ years old, begot Serug in the γλγʹ year of the world, in the σξβʹ year of Peleg. Serug, being ρλʹ years old, begot Nahor in the γρξγʹ year of the world. Nahor, being οθʹ years old, begot Terah in the γσμβʹ year of the world. Terah, being οʹ years old, begot Abraham; and he lived on ρλεʹ years until the λεʹ year of Isaac; in his ρμεʹ year, Abraham, leaving him in Haran, sojourned in the land of Canaan according to a divine oracle, having been born in the γτιγʹ year of the world, and having set foot on the promised land in the γτπζʹ year from Adam, being in the οεʹ year of his life. Abraham, being ρʹ years old, begot Isaac according to the promise. Isaac, being ξʹ years old, begot Jacob in the γυογʹ year of the world. This was also the ρξαʹ year of Abraham, so that it is clear that Jacob, in the ροεʹ year of Abraham, in which he passed away, was at least ιδʹ years old. Jacob, in the πβʹ year of his life, begot Levi, as has been clearly demonstrated in the preceding compilation. For there is every necessity to interpose θʹ years between the birth of Joseph and Levi, since he was born ninth after him. And Joseph is shown from scripture to have been born in the ζαʹ year of Jacob, if indeed in the ρκʹ year of his father, being λʹ years of age, he is elevated to the rule of Egypt. And it is jointly demonstrated because of this that Levi was necessarily born θʹ years before him in the πβʹ year of Jacob. Θάρα γενόμενος ἐτῶν οʹ ἐγέννησε τὸν Ἀβραάμ· ἐπέζησε δὲ ἔτη ρλεʹ ἕως τοῦ λεʹ ἔτους τοῦ Ἰσαάκ· τούτου ρμεʹ ἔτει Ἀβραὰμ καταλιπὼν αὐτὸν ἐν Χαρρὰν παρῴκησεν εἰς γῆν Χαναὰν κατὰ θεῖον χρησμόν, γεννηθεὶς μὲν τῷ γτιγʹ ἔτει τοῦ κόσμου, ἐπιβὰς δὲ τῆς ἐπηγγελμένης γῆς τῷ γτπζʹ ἐξ Ἀδάμ, οεʹ ὄντι τῆς ζωῆς αὐτοῦ ἔτει. Ἀβραὰμ γενόμενος ἐτῶν ρʹ ἐξ ἐπαγγελίας ἐγέννησε τὸν Ἰσαάκ. Ἰσαὰκ γενόμενος ἐτῶν ξʹ ἐγέννησε τὸν Ἰακὼβ τῷ γυογʹ ἔτει τοῦ κόσμου. τὸ δ' αὐτὸ ἦν καὶ τοῦ Ἀβραὰμ ἔτος ρξαʹ, ὡς εἶναι δῆλον ὅτι ὁ Ἰακὼβ κατὰ τὸ ροεʹ ἔτος Ἀβραάμ, ἐν ᾧ μετήλλαξεν, ιδʹ ἐτῶν ἦν τοὐλάχιστον. Ἰακὼβ ἔτει πβʹ τῆς ζωῆς αὐτοῦ ἐγέννησε τὸν Λευί, καθὼς ἐν τῇ προ λαβούσῃ συντάξει σαφῶς ἀποδέδεικται. ἀνάγκη γὰρ ἅπασα μεταξὺ τῆς γενέσεως Ἰωσὴφ καὶ Λευὶ θʹ μεσεμβολεῖν ἔτη, ἐπεὶ καὶ ἔνατος ἐτέχθη μετ' αὐτόν. ἀποδείκνυται δὲ Ἰωσὴφ ἐκ τῆς γραφῆς τῷ ζαʹ Ἰακὼβ τεχθείς, εἴ γε ρκʹ ἔτει τοῦ πατρὸς λʹ ἔτος ἄγων ἐπὶ τῆς ἀρχῆς Αἰγύπτου ἀναβι βάζεται. συναποδέδεικται δὲ καὶ Λευὶ διὰ τοῦτο πρὸ θʹ ἐτῶν αὐτοῦ τῷ πβʹ ἐξ ἀνάγκης γεννηθεὶς τοῦ Ἰακὼβ ἔτει. καὶ ἔτι πρὸς τούτοις ἐπισυνάγε 134 ται πρὸ δέκα τῆς γενέσεως ἐτῶν τοῦ Λευὶ παραγενέσθαι τὸν Ἰσραὴλ εἰς Μεσοποταμίαν. ζʹ γὰρ ἔτη
